New Gods of North America
Bar Gathering
Wayne walked over to the two beautiful girls at the bar under the gaze of the crowd.
He cleared his throat and prepared to start talking:
"Everyone, I'm glad you could..."
At this moment, a man suddenly rushed in from outside the bar and shouted at Wayne, "He came here in the church's carriage! He is a member of the church--"
It was as if some dangerous conspiracy had been uncovered.
Some people in the bar immediately became alert, some seemed to be planning to leave immediately, and some seemed to be considering whether to attack or control Wayne and the others first.
Forehead,
You messed up my train of thought...
Wayne thought for a moment, then raised his hand to everyone, intending to stabilize the situation:
"Don't be nervous. I do have some connection with the church, but I am not a member of the church.
"We were commissioned by Roose Bolton to assist in investigating the serial murders in Kankers City, and we are only investigating that case.
"As for why I want to gather everyone here tonight, it's because a few of us have indeed been targeted by the murderer. This is both a risk and an opportunity; it's both out of personal grudge and for the justice of the city."
After saying that, Wayne also pulled out one of the investigation orders signed by Roose Bolton from his coat.
He handed it to Lina beside him and signaled her to continue passing it out so that everyone could pass it around.
With an explanation that was tentatively acceptable and things starting to be passed around, the bar calmed down a bit, and most people didn't seem to be in a hurry to take action anymore - at the very least, they wanted to see what the thing was first before making any plans.
An elegant middle-aged man who seemed quite opinionated passed the investigation order to the side after reading it and asked:
"This is indeed an investigation order signed by the head of the city's church's exorcism department. But why should we trust you? And why would the church specifically entrust you to conduct an investigation?"
If I say that we just happened to be passing by, and happened to know Roose Bolton, so we were dragged in to assist in the investigation...
Would you believe...?
Wayne didn't hesitate and directly chose a simpler, more straightforward, easier to understand, and more convincing version of the story:
"We are a group of private detectives who specialize in accepting commissions to investigate and handle various cases involving 'Extraordinary Crimes'.
"If you know any of the famous wanted criminals in the West, then we arrested and shot Freddy the Gray Wolf, who had a bounty of $250, and the brothers Arthur Iverson and Louis Iverson, who had bounties of $500 and $200 respectively."
Some people may not know the name of the wanted criminal.
However, the comparison of the bounty amounts can easily give people an intuitive concept.
A burst of whispers immediately broke out among the crowd.
Some even asked provocatively, "Then you still have a lot of money on you, right?"
Wayne chose to respond positively:
"Yes. If you think you are better than those well-known wanted criminals, then you can give it a try.
"Friendly reminder, when we shot the Iverson brothers, they were with the gang members. We shot and killed at least 20 gang members at the scene.
"And we are participating in the investigation on behalf of the church. If something unexpected happens during our investigation, the bounty for your arrest may become higher than that of the murderer."
The man seemed even more dissatisfied, "Then why should we help you catch the murderer?"
Wayne did not hesitate:
"Three reasons. First, the reward offered by the police station to the murderer is not high. The reason why you all chose to appear here should be to eliminate criminals and maintain the 'justice' of the city's order, not for other reasons.
"Secondly, we are just passing by and participating in the investigation. The murderer did not target us from the beginning, and we do not have to arrest the murderer. We chose to be the 'bait' to attract the murderer, but we are willing to take the risk. In this regard, we and you are in a relationship of mutual assistance, not just you helping us.
"at last……"
Wayne thought about it for a moment:
"Finally, our detective agency has obtained a special charter from the church in Virginia. As long as it does not violate the law, members of our detective agency will not be sanctioned by the church simply because of their identity as 'Extraordinary People'. This is not only an identity that allows one to live a normal life in the sun, but also a legal job.
"Our detective agency is currently in the recruitment stage. You can also regard this kind of 'mutual help' as a small interview. If you are interested in this, you can consider actively showing your interest and strive to join us and become our partner. If you are not interested in this, at least we can help each other.
"I have finished speaking. You can think about it first. We will discuss the murderer later."
After Wayne finished speaking, he opened his simple-line vision and kept an eye on his surroundings, then turned around and sat down across the bar. He pushed out a coin and ordered a glass of whiskey.
Lina came closer and said nothing, but her eyes were full of excitement and anticipation as she looked at Wayne.
Wayne nodded and gave her a look that confirmed that he had gotten the item.
Then Lina whispered "Wuhu", gave Wayne a thumbs up, and then skipped Wayne to whisper to Inissa.
After slowly finishing a glass of whiskey - a 'glass' of liquor in a bar is strictly speaking a 'portion', which is a little more than an ounce, about 30 to 40 milliliters -
Wayne turned around again and looked at the people who were still in the bar:
"Now, we should be able to continue our conversation about how to arrest the murderer, right?"
…
When Wayne and his companions drove away in the carriage, there was an owl flying silently above the carriage.
Lina couldn't help but ask for the special order in the carriage and wanted to see it.
Using the light of the kerosene lamp, Lina could see the contents of the paper clearly. She reached out and lightly touched the paper.
As the spiritual power was injected, the paper pages immediately reacted. The faint light spread like ripples, and some of the patterns and text on the franchise order were like reefs in the water, highlighted by the faint light. The cursive signature at the end seemed to flash slightly.
"Wuhu——"
Linna held up the charter in both hands and cheered in the carriage, "That priest Tywin seems to be more generous than I thought."
Wayne confirmed with them again, "What exactly do Articles 4 to 7 of the Exorcist Act say?"
Inesa briefly explained:
"Personal freedom, regulatory restrictions, personal privacy, and behavioral restraints. It's similar to what you just said. As long as it does not conflict with other church regulations or violate secular laws, with this charter, you are basically a completely 'free citizen' at the church level."
Then Inesa thought for a moment, "But to set up a detective agency, we need to recruit more companions... Are you planning to develop your own power?"
Hmm...
I didn't really think about it that much at first, but since we were fighting crime and we had a special license,
It's definitely easier to get things done with more people.
