New Gods of North America
Dinner
Another sleepless night.
Wayne was planning to go home and take a nap, and when he got back to the door, he saw little Taylor's carriage waiting there.
Waiting here with little Taylor was Mr. Greenspan's butler.
When Wayne went up to ask, he found out that he had asked the mayor to invite the three big landowners to dinner at his house as soon as possible.
Originally, Wayne wanted to trick them over separately and have them try the holy water one by one. However, with Dr. John's identity exposed and a lot of things happening in the past few days, Wayne almost forgot about it.
Unexpectedly, the three big landlords have gladly accepted the invitation and even chose to come tonight.
Mrs. Taylor arranged for little Taylor to come and deliver the message, Mr. Greenspan sent his butler, and Mr. Stern also called one of his men over.
However, after waiting for a while, Mr. Stern's men told Taylor Jr. that Mr. Stern had been invited to the appointment, and asked Taylor Jr. to tell Wayne, and then he slipped away first.
Mr. Greenspan's butler is very much in line with the style of the upper class of the Kingdom of Windsor.
Even though little Taylor offered to convey the message on his behalf, the butler still continued to wait here meticulously, saying that he would respond to the invitation in person on behalf of his employer, as this was in accordance with etiquette.
All right,
Since they have agreed to come, you can't stand them up at the last minute.
I've only heard of playing Fighting Landlord, but I've never heard of playing Walking Landlord.
Wayne then thanked the butler for the message and said that he would be prepared and would warmly welcome Mr. Greenspan when the time comes.
After sending the butler away, Wayne put his arm around little Taylor's shoulder:
"Aren't you dating Miss Greenspan now? Find out for me as soon as possible in the next two days which people in town her father usually interacts with. Is there anyone he interacts closely with privately, or anyone who she finds unusual."
Little Taylor frowned. "Are you investigating Mr. Greenspan? What did he do wrong?"
Wayne thought of the mayor's instructions and chose a roundabout way. "He has done nothing wrong. But I suspect he may have been deceived."
"Then I'll try my best. Although Historia's relationship with her father is a little tense now, if she knew that you were investigating her father, she might not be willing to tell me about it," said Little Taylor.
Wayne didn't comment. "Anyway, just ask first. Tell me the result as soon as possible."
"OK."
After saying this, Little Taylor returned to the carriage and asked the coachman to drive away.
Wayne returned home and searched everywhere in the house.
In the room, Lina was hugging the quilt, curled up lazily on the bed, with fluffy hair, blurry eyes, and a bunch of silly hair on her head.
It seems like he just woke up and hasn't come back to life yet.
Wayne decided to help cheer her up.
A double eagle gold coin with a face value of $20 was thrown over, a golden light flashed, and Lina clapped her hands in the air.
“Pah—”
Lina yawned, opened her clenched palms, and glanced inside casually.
Seeing that it was a large gold coin, Lina's expression instantly regained its lively look, and light appeared in her eyes.
When she looked up at Wayne again, there was a sweet smile on her face, and even her voice was hoarse:
"Mr. Wayne, is there anything I can do for you?"
"We have guests coming to our house for dinner tonight, and we need Chef Parker to come in. Apart from the cost of purchasing the ingredients, the rest will be yours."
"Okay."
Lina jumped up on the bed, revealing a pair of long legs under her nightgown, slender and round.
Then Lina lifted the pillow,
"Why don't you go out? I need to change my clothes."
…
It turns out that
Wayne obviously greatly underestimated Chef Parker's skills.
Oxtail baked in red wine, French duck confit, roasted vegetable stew, cream of mushroom soup, apple puff pastry...
Each dish was delicately presented to make it look as if it was too expensive to eat, and each one was fragrant, fresh and delicious.
Plus the aged brandy that Wayne dug out from the cellar in his backyard,
Several big landowners were very satisfied with the meal.
But at the same time,
Wayne obviously greatly underestimated the desire of a little money-grubber to control costs...
Damn, the cost of the ingredients for this meal is added up.
I'm afraid it won't cost 20 cents.
The more expensive beef is the oxtail, which is usually treated as a waste in the West - if you buy a little more steak, the owner might just give it to you as a gift.
The gross profit margin can reach 99%.
Lina, you are awesome.
After dinner, Parker was responsible for clearing up and cleaning, and the servants of the three large landowners also helped.
Lina changed into a decent dress and turned into a socialite, chatting with Mrs. Taylor in the living room.
The men gathered in the recreation room upstairs to smoke cigars after dinner.
Wayne himself didn't like this thing, so he could only chat with them while inhaling the second-hand smoke.
Then Inessa came over with a tray, and Wayne made up something:
"Gentlemen, this is the cold brewed flower tea specially prepared by the chef. It is said that it tastes even better when paired with a cigar. Please try it."
The scented tea is real scented tea, but it has a sufficient amount of holy water added to it.
Mr. Stern took the cup and took a sip, then made a polite compliment and continued to enjoy his cigar.
Mr. Greenspan, who was chatting with two men about their views on prices, just nodded and took over the conversation. He only picked up the cup when the conversation paused.
"puff--"
As soon as he took a sip of the scented tea, he spat it out.
Mr. Greenspan seemed to be choked, and then he had a series of violent coughing. When he patted his throat and straightened up, his face and neck had turned red and the cup had been knocked over.
Mr. Stern was obviously surprised.
But Mr. Greenspan just took out the scarf that was sticking out of his coat pocket, wiped his mouth, and apologized to everyone:
"Sorry, I accidentally choked. I'll ask the housekeeper to come and clean it up."
Inesa nodded slightly beside him, so Wayne pretended not to notice and said with a smile, "It's okay, just let Miss Inesa go and call her."
Apart from this little episode, the whole evening was a great pleasure for both the guests and the hosts.
Mr. Stern thought that Wayne organized such a small-scale dinner because there was something important and wanted to discuss it with the big landowners in private. He even asked secretly before getting on the carriage.
Wayne smiled and said that he just wanted to keep in touch, and then he sent away Mr. Stern and Mrs. Taylor, as well as the servants they brought with them.
Suddenly, most of the hostages present were gone.
Lina pestered the housekeeper in the kitchen, while Wayne and Inessa blocked Mr. Greenspan in the living room:
"Mr. Greenspan, please wait a moment.
"We have a few more questions for you."
Mr. Greenspan showed an expression of doubt and uncertainty on his face.
