New Gods of North America
Interrogation
According to Wayne's stereotype of assassination cases, normally, these cases mostly go in two directions:
One situation is that after the action is completed, sometimes even before the assassination is officially launched, the mastermind and accomplices have already begun an orderly evacuation, and it is estimated that it will often be impossible to catch up after the fact.
The other situation is that the mastermind and accomplices may appear very clean, and even after a year and a half, they may still be wandering around locally as if nothing had happened.
The former and the latter roughly correspond to "powerful outsiders" and "local bullies" respectively, but it is not absolute. In many cases, it is actually a "mix and match."
But in any case, this kind of case basically can't be rushed, and even the murderer himself who was caught at the scene may not be the key.
After the murderer was brought up, he looked like a quite decent civilized person.
His name is Karl, in his forties, with glasses that fit the modern style on his face, feeling a bit gentle and refined. He looks like he has gained weight, but he is actually quite muscular.
Judging from his resume, this guy once served in the U.S. Army and also obtained an accounting license, which means that half of his leg has already stepped into the petty bourgeoisie.
However, his current occupation can only be regarded as an ordinary clerk. He has changed six jobs in five years, and his actual income may not be considered high in the "decent people" sequence.
Although glasses have been initially popularized these years, the average price is still in the "light luxury" range, and Americans' acceptance of this thing is actually average.
Even if some people have a rigid demand for it, in fact, they still tend to use the so-called "monocle" or "legless glasses", only wearing them when they need to, and taking them off when they can.
Comparing this guy's resume and image, there is a feeling of "deliberately appearing harmless to humans and animals."
"We have interrogated him repeatedly several times. There are no problems with the process and specific details of the crime, and he himself has confessed. I don't think there is any need to re-examine this case."
Sheriff William also has their own files on hand. After saying this, even the several police officers next to him nodded slightly in agreement.
Wayne understands this situation. After all, their public identity at this time is as special investigators sent by the "City Police Committee."
In popular perception, this kind of investigation is generally to find fault with the local police. It is normal for people to cooperate, but they have some emotions or feel that their group is redundant.
However, one thing is one thing. It is understandable for normal police officers, but it would be bad if bad guys take advantage of the situation.
Wayne has a wealth of experience in arguing, "We are also doing routine business, please cooperate with our work."
Then he politely asked the local police officers to leave.
After the incident, the first thing the Cathedral did after catching the murderer was to confirm whether the other party was a "fallen" and whether he was affected by extraordinary powers.
After judging that both were not the case, this guy was sent to the police station for handling as a secular case.
Wayne had previously specifically asked Tom Hagen whether there were any problems with the process. After all, before Wayne came, he thought the murderer would be detained in a place similar to Georgeberg's "Old Police Station."
Tom Hagen's answer was quite realistic. The Puritans were expelled because they opposed the Windsor Church. They opposed the royal power's excessive influence on religion and the religion's excessive interference in secular affairs. After arriving in the New World, the Holy Spirit Church, which subsequently developed, naturally had more self-restraint.
In theory, the church should not interfere too much in matters unrelated to faith and extraordinary powers. As the capital of Virginia, Richmond gathers forces from all sides, and things will naturally appear more "each performs its own duties."
But conversely, perhaps it is because the whole thing is too in line with the process that Bishop Corleone and Tom Hagen are sure that there is another hidden secret behind this matter. The Cathedral's current approach looks like it has already put its hand on the table, and decided to consider whether to overturn the table after the dishes are served.
Then the hard work falls on Wayne, the "food taster."
Real inquiries inevitably seem a bit boring, especially when facing a murderer who has confessed and is slacking off.
Wayne also followed the usual steps, personally asked about the relevant situation again, and then asked about the relevant details in person, trying to find flaws in it.
The other party's motive for the crime is actually a bit strange. The initial cause was that he had witnessed Tom Hagen taking people away and arresting a kind neighbor who had taken care of him for a long time, and then he began to pay attention to some of Tom Hagen's affairs.
Judging from the murderer's old diary and the testimony of witnesses found by the police, this guy did express dissatisfaction with some clergymen of the Cathedral beforehand, thinking that a group of people led by Tom Hagen were abusing their power.
Then he "secretly made up his mind" to punish him on behalf of social justice or something.
Seeing him so cooperative, Wayne, from the perspective that "there must be something wrong with this matter," was curious about how this guy should escape in the end.
After all, in these years, plea bargaining in America is only the privilege of a few people. It has not become an industry for millions of workers like in modern society. The murderers in normal assassination cases either go to the gallows soon after the fact, or leave a confession in prison during the interrogation and "commit suicide." Logically speaking, there should not be much room for survival.
As a result, this guy named Karl is quite a "martyr." He doesn't seem to have thought about continuing to survive at all.
This kind of fearlessness, if not moving America, at least in the West, should be able to move many gang or bandit bosses. The whole thing is a pretense of "I did everything, I confess to all the crimes, and it has nothing to do with other people."
Since he is not afraid of death, then check the financial situation and the situation of family members?
If he is a "death warrior" or a "dagger" deliberately guided by someone with ulterior motives, then there may have been "kind people" who provided him with financial assistance before,
Or another routine, some people noticed his plan, so they secretly opened the door for his actions.
Time passed quickly for more than two hours,
Wayne looked for clues to the answer, and found that if only from the confession, it seemed difficult to involve this guy with any third party. He was thinking about whether he should look for other breakthroughs, such as visiting neighbors or rummaging through his home.
Lina had already made an excuse that she was tired from the interrogation, and took the opportunity to run outside to chat with the police officers who were supervising them and try to get close to them, trying to "overtake on a curve."
Only the honest Inisa was still seriously and patiently asking the murderer about the relevant situation and details.
In the end, even the murderer seemed a little helpless, "Madam, I have said the same content several times, and you should understand that what I said is the truth, right?"
Unexpectedly, Inisa shook her head very clearly:
"There are three places in your testimony that are inconsistent with the actual situation.
"You said that you bought the murder weapon three months ago on the twelfth, but that day was Sunday, and the weapons store should not be open;
"Regarding the potion for poisoning the bullets, you pretended to know a lot about it, but you don't know that it cannot be heated and dried. If it was really made by you according to the recipe you saw in the library, then you should know that it cannot be overheated;
"As for Tom Hagen, he has traveled to Georgeberg many times in the past two months, which does not match the activity pattern you can observe. You should not be able to determine that he would appear at that time. Choosing the time to lie in ambush and commit the crime is not in line with common sense.
"You should have accomplices, but you are unwilling to admit it."
Not to mention the murderer on the opposite side pretending to adjust his glasses, even Wayne next to him felt a chill down his spine.
Mom, yeah,
If I plan to lie to Inisa in the future, should I make a better draft?
I'm still catching up on yesterday's KPIs today, I'll do it as soon as possible
