New Gods of North America
Conflicting Testimonies
To be honest, Wayne, having transmigrated from modern society, felt that his breadth of knowledge should at least be slightly above average in this world.
However, after interrogating the assassin named "Karl" again, Wayne had to admit that he had never encountered such a chaotic situation before.
In the corridor outside the interrogation room, Ineisha was explaining her analysis to Wayne:
"Karl and Effner are from Prussia and grew up in the same village. After the village was destroyed, they deserted the army and found others with similar ideas, embarking on a path of revenge together. During this time, they communicated with or clashed with many organizations to gather information."
"From the organizational structure of their group, Effner is now their leader, and the accomplice named Steve is the main contact between the leader and ordinary members, with experience in intelligence organizations. Other members have their own roles, responsible for planning, intelligence gathering, and execution. After going into hiding, members mainly contact each other unilaterally through the main contact, rarely communicating with each other, even pretending not to know each other when carrying out joint missions."
"Karl's feelings for Effner may be subtle, so Effner never noticed or gave Karl a formal response. Effner's daily communication with Steve is more frequent, and he didn't pay much attention to Karl before. From Effner's perspective, Karl seems to have had a closer relationship with a deceased member named Robert, and even recruited a new member with the same name later, possibly with some nostalgic thoughts. But from Steve's point of view, Karl still clearly has feelings for Effner…"
Wayne had to raise his hand to interrupt Ineisha's analysis, "Wait a minute, is there something wrong with your last analysis?"
Ineisha blinked, seemingly starting to rethink, "Their feelings are quite complicated, and I don't know much about this kind of thing… If we only look at the existing testimony, Steve mentioned Daniel more often, and he may care more about him, but if you think about it this way, the emotional lines between them seem even more complicated…"
"…"
Wayne silently changed the subject, "What do you think of the conflict between Karl and Effner's testimonies? I mean the part related to the assassination."
Ineisha's judgment in this regard was more direct:
"Karl said he received a coded message using the group's secret code, which is why he began to assassinate Tom Hagen. The reason given in the instructions was that Tom Hagen had been watching them and might cause significant losses to the group. Time was of the essence, and emergency action was required. But Effner's previous testimony almost completely denied this statement, indicating that one of them is likely lying."
"Of course, it is also possible that someone forged their internal communication method, leading to this misunderstanding. However, their group is not very large, and the level of secrecy is not low. Steve, the contact with the most suspicion, doesn't seem to have the motive to do so. Emotionally, he and…"
Wayne raised his hand again, choosing to surrender, "Let's not talk about their feelings, let's just discuss objective facts…"
He didn't expect the relationships between a few men to be so messy, comparable to a girls' dormitory where three people can create four group chats.
But fortunately, Wayne wasn't the kind of detective who liked to explore the motives of the crime. Orthodox detectives don't care about emotions, they don't care whether the murderer is a human or a dog.
Ineisha obviously preferred rational analysis, and seemed more relaxed when she heard this:
"The assassin Karl said that he destroyed the relevant letters before the action, and there is no evidence to support his statement. Although the leader Effner cannot prove 'nothing,' the testimonies of the contact and accomplices are more consistent with his statement. They have no motive against Tom Hagen."
"I currently tend to believe that Effner is telling the truth, and the assassination is likely not a planned action by their group. Karl's testimony is problematic, indicating that he may be lying or defecting."
If it was an agent defecting, then the real culprit behind the assassination would have to be the person who turned Karl…
A guy who chose to go into hiding in the New World to avenge his hometown, it's not realistic to try to buy him off with money, and it seems a bit difficult to threaten him with his life.
The more Wayne thought about it, the more he couldn't figure it out. Could it really be because of love?
If he were to hand this murderer over directly, not even the Cathedral, even Wayne himself would feel it was not right.
The situation was stuck in such a strange place that Wayne was already considering whether to ask Miss Ovilia to come over and help see if there was anything else in these people's heads besides pink bubbles.
…
The turning point came unexpectedly from the detective agency's temporary base.
"Chameleon" had just made a mistake tonight and seemed a little cautious when handing over the message to Wayne.
Wayne opened the small note and learned that Willie and the others had to accompany Lina these days, acting in the temporary base with their sugar daddy, Mr. Morier. Since they were idle anyway, they collected fingerprints on the collected evidence with the detectives guarding the house.
Willie was relatively talented in this area. After comparison, he found a fingerprint extracted from the assassin Karl's house that also appeared in the house of the attacked Mr. Morier, which is now considered a match.
The fingerprint from the assassin Karl's house was found on a flowerpot outside the window, which looked like someone had moved it during a window entry. The fingerprint from Mr. Morier's house was found in a similar place, on the window glass that was removed from his house by the detective agency, also on the "outside" side.
If you were to imagine it, then there was such a guy responsible for monitoring or good at prying windows, who had appeared at the residences of both the assassin Karl and Mr. Morier.
This person is definitely not a key figure, and his status may be closer to an ordinary detective in the detective agency. He should be the type who usually needs to do actual work, so it may not be easy to find him.
However, compared to "who he is," the identity he represents is more worthy of scrutiny. As soon as this information came out, even Wayne had to think deeply.
Mr. Morier and the assassin's group were not on the "same side," and were even enemies in a sense, while the guy whose fingerprints were found was likely involved in the attack on Mr. Morier, and could be considered the "enemy of the enemy" of the assassin's group.
But from the location where the fingerprint was found in Karl's house, this person didn't seem to be Karl's accomplice or guest…
A member of a third-party force seemed to have made abnormal contact with both sides of the enemy. What was going on?
Wayne thought for a while and said to "Chameleon": "Collect the fingerprints of the assassin and these accomplices and send them back to Willie and the others to compare again to see if there are any more matches."
Then he lowered his voice slightly, "Have you collected the fingerprints of Chief William before? His fingerprints also need to be compared."
"We only collected the fingerprints of the police officers who went to the scene before. We don't seem to have Chief William's fingerprints…"
Before "Chameleon" could finish his sentence, Liam knocked him on the head, "You're stupid, can't we extract fingerprints from the glass? It's not difficult to send him a drink."
Wayne glanced at Liam. This guy's adaptability was really strong. He quickly thought of new ways to play with fingerprints, and had the potential to become an outlaw.
He hoped that the other relevant parties in this case would not adapt so quickly.
