Rebirth in America

Chapter 59 Looking for Elvis

After the establishment of Carpenter Records, it initially relied on Alex and Richard. By the time Bill and others joined, the Carpenter brothers' recording income was no longer the main part of the company.

However, the Carpenters still released a total of 10 records in the first year. The songs on these records are basically songs written by Alex, and they are all songs suitable for children to sing.

The first few albums of the Carpenter Brothers sold well, but the sales of subsequent albums slowly dropped. Perhaps people no longer had the novelty of this style of music. What's more important is that many bands are now emerging that are imitating the singing style of the Carpenter Brothers. These people were not successful at first, but over time some of the bands that emerged are particularly outstanding.

Alex didn't want to change the Carpenter Brothers' style just yet, so the songs he copied were basically songs by Declan's talented child stars. There has been no change in their singing style, and they have not toured, so their influence is not as great as that of other singers.

Not long after Bill joined, Richard suddenly said to Alex: "I also wrote some songs, let's see how they go."

Alex already knew that Richard could write a song, and he was pretty good at it. However, the songs he copied were all of high quality after all. For the songs written by Richard, Mark and the others would of course use Alex's instead of Richard's.

This time it was completely different and the songs Richard wrote were fantastic. Alex had to admit that the songs written by his brother were more suitable for them and more suitable for this era. Mark and others were full of praise when they heard it, and they also included Richard's songs in the recording list.

Alex doesn't really care that his brother Richard is stealing the spotlight. He took the opportunity to be lazy and cheated, and asked to rest for a while. As for the songwriting work, it was handed over to Richard.

There was a reason why he needed to rest.

He wanted to go to Memphis. After finding Bill Haley, he remembered another future rock star, the famous "King of Rock and Roll" Elvis Presley. That is the guy called Elvis Presley by the Chinese.

In fact, Elvis's nickname "Elvis" was first coined by Hong Kong people.

It may be that his nickname was The Hillbilly Cat (TheHillbillyCat) given to him by his fanatical Southern fans. In addition, he has a high status in the American rock music industry and is collectively known as The King. So when the Hong Kong media translated it, they combined these two titles and collectively called them "Elvis"!

Alex was not a musician in his previous life, but he had also heard the name "Elvis" and had some understanding of Elvis' current situation. During this period, Elvis was either a student or a truck driver. It was not until an accidental opportunity in 1953 that he was discovered by Sun Records.

He planned to strike first, knowing that there was such an awesome person and deliberately let him go. Wouldn't that be asking for trouble? With Bill and Elvis, he could lie in bed and count money every day even if he didn't do anything.

As the saying goes, the highest level of making money is to let others work for you to make money.

Why are you working so hard? Isn't it just to make money and enjoy yourself? Alex is now out of the poverty stage. Now that he has the backing of Carpenter Records, he no longer has to work hard to sing. If he has time, he can still find talents everywhere.

As for the reason for dealing with his parents, he thought of one, which was to write better songs, so he wanted to go to Memphis. Memphis is now a music city, and many bands and singers came out here. There are also many black singers and record companies here, but they are not very famous yet.

Bart and Angel originally refused. They thought that although Alex was smart, he was still too young to travel away from his parents. What they didn't expect was that Alex was already prepared for this, and he took Dill with him.

Alex said to Dill: "You can't just look for singers in places like New York. You have to go elsewhere, such as Memphis, Tennessee. I heard there are many good singers there."

Dill looked at Alex with some confusion and asked, "How do you know this?"

"Haha! Why didn't I know? I have so many fans, and many singers wrote to me after listening to my songs." Alex immediately thought of an explanation to fool Dill.

When Dill saw Bart and Angel asking him for confirmation, he realized that he had been tricked by Alex. However, he still did not directly expose Alex's plan. He honestly said that he wanted to go to Memphis to find new people. Not mentioning anything about Alex or what Alex said to him.

With Dill by their side, the Carpenters finally felt relieved and agreed to Alex's request.

Memphis is a city in the U.S. state of Tennessee. It played an extremely important role in the development of southern American culture and is known as the birthplace of rock and roll. Like Nashville, it's a music town. Many of the most famous musicians in the future grew up in Memphis and around the Mississippi River, including Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Johnny Cash, Robert Johnson, etc.

Among them, B.B. King was discovered by Bullet Recording and RMP a few years ago and has recorded many popular songs. Carpenter Records also approached him, but they ignored it. After all, there is a difference between famous and unfamous singers. If you wait until they become famous, they will not tolerate you anymore.

Alex didn't know these things originally, but Dill told him on the way to Memphis.

"The most important thing is that we are a white record company, and he is black." Dill explained that he believed that the other party was unwilling to join Carpenter Records because of his skin color.

Alex shook his head. He was still not used to the view of race in this era. There was no such thing in the education he received. He believed that people are born equal regardless of race or color. However, he would not deny the existence of such a problem.

Perhaps, it was precisely because of this that Little Richard was unwilling to come to their company. Little Richard had a better place to be, a place that was more comfortable, more familiar, and safer for him.

They finally arrived in Memphis, and Dill drove the cab all the way to downtown Memphis, where they found themselves in the heart of the city amid a scene of bustle and excitement.

Every car passing by is brand new and shiny. There are various shops on both sides of the street. Men walking on the road are in suits and ties, and women are wearing fashionable clothes and beautiful hats.

"Wow! This city is so fucking alive!" Dill whistled to the pretty girl on the street.

They asked the driver to drive to a famous nearby blues bar, which is said to be the "music" center of Memphis. The bar is closed during the day, but the pedestrian street in front of the door is already crowded with some black singers who are eager to succeed, singing and singing non-stop.

When Alex and Dill passed by these people, they would stop and stand aside to listen for a while.

There are many people like them, and usually everyone who plays well will attract a large number of people around the singer. There are both whites and blacks in the audience. Only under the aura of music, racial segregation has disappeared, and they are no longer separated because of skin color.

Dill listened intently, but Alex looked around, trying to find the "Elvis" in his memory among the crowd! It's a pity that he didn't find any of them. None of them fit Elvis's image and characteristics.

As night fell, Dill took Alex into a bar. Here, inspiring music fills every corner of the bar. The bar is filled with smoke, and they feel like they are walking in the clouds.

Faced with this situation, Alex was very unhappy. He hated smoking, and he hated secondhand smoke even more, but he didn't show it.

Some of the people in the bar were drinking alone, while others were gathering in twos and threes to have a good time.

Dill pulled Alex to the liquor cabinet, ordered a glass of whiskey for himself, and then ordered a glass of beer for Alex. There were no non-alcoholic drinks here, so he had to drink beer to quench his thirst.

Slowly drinking the beer in the cup, Alex began to feel that his behavior of looking for someone in person was a bit reckless. With so many bars in Memphis, finding a 17-year-old truck driver is like finding a needle in a haystack.

"If I had known, I would have asked a private detective to do this job. It would be boring!" Alex whispered to himself.

Dill was so focused on the stage that he didn't hear what Alex was saying. He slowly thought and imagined in his mind to see if there were any future singers among these people.

On the first day, the two of them returned to the hotel with nothing to gain. When they were lying on the bed to rest, Dill was still recalling the songs they heard in the bar. Alex had already fallen asleep. He had been tortured by the noisy environment of the bar all day and wished he could go back to bed early.

Early the next morning, before Dill woke up, Alex was already awake. He looked at Dill who was lying on the other bed and climbed up lightly.

Alex thought for a moment, then got dressed and washed up. Quietly, he walked out of the room, went to the bottom of the hotel, and found a place to have breakfast. By the time he finished his breakfast, he already had a detailed plan in mind.

He first found a phone booth near the hotel, dialed one of the numbers, and used his "simulated memory" ability to pretend to be Bart's voice and said: "Hello, operator. Please transfer me to Jeff Detective Agency."

"Okay, please wait!" said the operator on the other side of the phone, a female operator.

After a while, there was a response from the other side of the phone, and a man's voice sounded: "This is Jeff Detective Agency, I'm Jeff. Who are you?"

Alex continued to use his ability to imitate his father's voice and said: "I am Bart Carpenter, you should remember me. Last time I asked you to help me find someone, do you remember?"

Jeff immediately recalled Bart hiring him to find Little Richard, and he quickly said, "Oh, yeah, I remember that."

It was the private detective that Alex asked Bart to come forward to find. If Little Richard had not saved him once, Bart would not care about this kind of thing. Now if Bart came forward to find Elvis, Alex didn't think of any reason. He had no choice but to use his own abilities to let "Bart" come forward. As for the aftermath, Alex had already thought of a way to keep Bart from knowing about it.

Over the phone, Alex told Jeff all the information he knew.

"When do you want it?"

"The sooner the better!"

"The fee is very expensive, at least US$100. If it is difficult to check, the fee will be increased."

"No problem, but if you can't find it within half an hour, UU read www.uukanshu.nett forget it."

"Okay, just wait by the phone and I'll call you in half an hour."

Jeff hung up the phone, thought for a moment, and called a sergeant from the New York Police Department to ask him to help find Elvis. This police chief is his old friend, and he would always ask this friend for help when something happens. Jeff's friend, the police sergeant, immediately called the Memphis Police Department and quickly found the 17-year-old driver, Elvis, and told him Elvis's address.

Less than half an hour later, Jeff immediately called Alex, who was waiting by the phone, and told him the information he found.

"Then, Mr. Jeff, please send the bill for this commission to the 'Tomorrow Hotel' in Memphis. I won't leave here yet." Alex told Jeff the address of the hotel and asked him to send the bill. , he can still afford this amount of money.

Unexpectedly, Jeff did not agree. He said, "Mr. Bart, our bills won't be sent out until the end of the month. I'm afraid you won't be in Memphis by then."

Faced with an unexpected situation, Alex came up with a plan and said, "Well, you can send it to Carpenter Records at the end of the month, and the recipient should be my son Alex, and I will ask him to bring him over. Sign it for me. As you know, I have been busy with research and development work recently and rarely leave the laboratory."

After Jeff heard this, he felt there was no problem, so he agreed.

After getting Elvis's address, Alex decided to take Dill with him. If he goes by himself, others may not believe him and regard him as a liar.
