Rebirth of the 1980s: The Military Industry Empire

#574 - Chapter 574: Resurrection of J-13?

"The positioning of this aircraft can refer to the F-16 and Mirage 2000," Qin Yang continued to introduce. "It uses a high-thrust turbofan engine, such as our current WS-10, and relies on the most advanced aerodynamic layout to obtain the most excellent maneuverability."

"President Qin, what is the most advanced aerodynamic layout?" Gu Lao asked.

Gu Lao is the most outstanding aircraft designer, and Qin Yang is just an artillery expert who builds guns and cannons, but now, Gu Lao's attitude is very sincere.

"The conventional third-generation aircraft of the F-16 type mainly adopt leading-edge vortex controllers and blended wing-body design, relying on vortex lift to improve the aircraft's high angle-of-attack performance. The Mirage 2000 and the aircraft currently being planned in Europe rely on canard layouts to improve maneuverability."

Qin Yang began to introduce: "These aircraft will not pursue speeds of Mach 2 or Mach 3, but they must be agile aircraft."

"Also, the flight control must be fly-by-wire. This operating system can greatly improve the fighter's agility and lay the foundation for the fighter's further development."

The J-11 is very strong, but after all, it is a copy. The Air Force still needs advanced self-developed fighters!

Qin Yang was thirsty, picked up the water glass next to him, and took a big gulp. After drinking, he looked at the people present in surprise.

"Everyone, why do you all look like you are in a daze? Are you listening to me?"

"President Qin, what you said is great!" Gu Lao said first, "But these requirements seriously exceed our country's industrial base. Our aviation industrial system simply cannot independently develop such advanced fighters. You also know that we have been working on a double-sized version of the J-7 for more than ten years, and it is still not mature."

Gu Lao had concerns. As a veteran of the domestic aviation industry, Gu Lao knew the level of domestic capabilities.

"Gu Lao, what you said is the past. We must look to the future. At present, our country's basic industries are advancing by leaps and bounds, and our country's aviation industry will also usher in an explosive development. If you think you can't do it, then your Northern Institute will really be eliminated."

"Besides us, are there other research institutes that can do it?" Gu Lao asked in surprise.

Is it Factory 960?

Definitely not. Although they have already begun to get involved in the domestic aviation industry, they are only limited to imitation, helping to complete some technically demanding products in the imitations.

When it comes to self-development, Factory 960 does not have this strength.

There are only two units in the country that can independently develop advanced fighter jets.

Gu Lao suddenly reacted: "Could it be Lao Song and the others?"

"That's right, I can reveal some secrets to you. Lao Song and the others are already starting to build the J-10. This will be an advanced canard layout fighter."

"J-10?" Old Lin was holding a wine bottle, intending to pour wine. Hearing Qin Yang's words, he was a little helpless: "Who gave them this model number?"

"That's right, the project model number was issued by our Air Force. This rule cannot be broken." An Air Force leader present was a little unhappy.

In the past, if you wanted to develop a fighter jet, the Air Force would put forward the requirements, and then the research institutes below would compete, and then the Air Force would issue the number.

The Air Force has not yet issued a task, and the research institutes below have started to work. The Air Force will not criticize this spirit of taking the initiative to work.

However, even the number is created by themselves, which is a bit out of line. Do Lao Song and the others still take the Air Force seriously?

"I gave it," Qin Yang said. "What, does the Air Force have different opinions?"

The Air Force leader, who was just about to get angry, was instantly embarrassed. The tense and serious face also quickly eased down, and he tried his best to squeeze out a smile.

"Where, what opinions can our Air Force have? This J-10 is well named. No wonder our heavy aircraft is called J-11. It turns out that it was reserved for Lao Song and the others."

"That's right, President Qin is farsighted!"

"Come, let's toast to President Qin's foresight!"

Lao Song and the others can't do it, but President Qin can!

Gu Lao was very shocked. When did President Qin have such a position in the Air Force's heart?

The director of a local factory dared to name the fighter jets needed by the Air Force. This kind of transgression was actually praised by a group of Air Force leaders.

Isn't President Qin too heaven-defying?

Who is President Qin?

The equipment most needed by the Air Force is all made by President Qin, airborne radar, missiles, engines, titanium alloy wing boxes, and a 60,000-ton hydraulic press is ready to build landing gear.

Who dares to offend President Qin? You have to coax President Qin!

Not to mention a small number, even if Qin Yang wants the Air Force leaders to help coordinate a transport plane to be his special plane, these Air Force leaders have to agree.

"Lao Gu, what are your thoughts?" Old Lin asked, "If you have any ideas, you can also research a brand-new fighter jet and participate in our Air Force's medium-sized aircraft bidding."

Gu Lao's face was embarrassed.

We have a lot of ideas, but do we have the strength?

"By the way, isn't the J-13 project that your 601 Institute abandoned very similar to the F-16?" An Air Force leader present spoke.

J-13! This statement evoked Gu Lao's memories again.

Domestic fighter jets started with the J-5, and all the way to the J-8. What about the subsequent models? Each has a story.

The J-9 after the J-8 was developed by Lao Song and the others, trying to create an advanced main fighter jet, but unfortunately, it was worked on on the drawing board for more than ten years, and was finally abandoned for various reasons.

The numbers J-10 and J-11 were vacant before. Following them was the J-12, code-named Air Li Xiangyang, planning to fight guerrillas in the sky. It sounded like nonsense and completely violated the development trend of fighter jets, so it was abandoned long ago.

Following is the J-13.

This project was not much later than the J-9.

In 1971, the domestic J-6 fleet began to age, and the higher-ups decided to look for replacement fighters. The 601 Institute began to work on various aerodynamic layouts.

By 1974, the Air Force officially proposed the research and development intention of this fighter, and the 601 Institute began formal research and development. In two years, they tested 20 different wing configurations and designed seven different airframes.

By 1976, the overall design was finalized: a cropped delta wing with leading-edge extensions, a high-mounted wing, a dihedral main wing and leading-edge maneuvering flaps, a ventral air intake, a single engine, and a single seat, which looked very similar to the F-16.

This product also has a carrier-based version.

However, this project could not continue.

There is no qualified engine in China!

The Spey engine is readily available, but it is weak at high altitudes!

The WS-6 is under development, and there is no hope of finalization.

Copying the WP-15 from the MiG-23 engine has not yet started.

In addition, after the subsequent adjustment of the national economy, the 601 Institute could only watch the J-13 project being abandoned. They could only concentrate all their efforts on the J-8, and as a result, it became what it is now.

Now, revive the J-13?
