At this time, they had not yet decided whether to use a tracked or wheeled chassis. It was not until the beginning of 1984 that the Italian Army finally put forward specific requirements, some of which determined that a wheeled chassis had to be used.

It required a sufficiently high road speed, a long range, and excellent off-road mobility. Tracked chassis couldn't speed on the road, so it had to be a wheeled chassis. High off-road performance requirements could be achieved with eight wheels.

Iveco was originally engaged in wheeled vehicles, so it was naturally good at this. In 1987, it produced the first "Centauro" tank destroyer prototype.

This prototype used Iveco's 6V-TCA turbocharged diesel engine with a power of 383 kilowatts, which was very powerful. There were also new engines that could be replaced at any time, with the power increasing to 440 kilowatts.

At the same time, matched with the advanced diesel engine was the H-type transmission system produced by the German company ZF. This was also the first time the H-type transmission system was used on a wheeled infantry fighting vehicle.

The Italians used it at the time because the military had requirements: this vehicle needed to be able to be transported by C-130 transport aircraft. If it was to be airlifted, the height should be as small as possible, so the H-type transmission system was chosen. As for ZF, it was a world-renowned transmission system supplier, and the transmission system they developed was very stable.

This method saves fuel, is flexible and convenient. More importantly, if it is driven by an electric motor, the gearbox is not needed, and the transmission system is not needed. For equipment similar to the eight-wheeled vehicle, you can directly stuff a hub motor into each wheel hub and drive it directly.

But, it can't be used now.

In the 1980s, these technologies were not mature. Qin Yang didn't have the energy to develop an electric vehicle project. This is a huge workload.
