Radar bands also have a very interesting story.

The British were the first to invent radar. At that time, the electromagnetic waves radiated by their radar tubes were 23 centimeters. They called this a long wave, or "Long", so this band was called the L-band. Later, it was changed to 22 centimeters. Since there was a long wave, there was also a short wave, which was a radar wave with a wavelength of 10 centimeters, called "short", or the S-band.

These radars were all used for searching and could only know the approximate location of the target, but could not accurately determine it. This required shorter electromagnetic waves, so a 3-centimeter electromagnetic wave was used as fire control radar, called the X-band. The X here means coordinate, the X in XYZ.

Later, some wanted both search and fire control, so they combined them into the C-band. C is the first letter of the English word "compromise", which means combination.

These bands are different from modern band naming, but because they existed from the beginning, they have been inherited, and radar engineers call them that.

As for the G-band, it is a modern term and corresponds to the former C-band. If you don't understand this history, you will definitely be confused.

For the Hongqi-5 air defense missile, relevant departments also made arduous efforts. One radar has also been developed, which is the SJ-202 radar. This is a three-coordinate target detection and tracking radar. One radar solves the two major problems of search and tracking. For the Hongqi-12, this radar is also very important, because the Hongqi-12 directly uses this radar.

It's also very interesting. It was originally developed for the Hongqi-5, but it was used for the Hongqi-12. Later, there was the Hongqi-9, and the land-based version of the Hongqi-9 also directly used this radar.

"The technology of this radar is quite advanced. The maximum search distance can reach 115 kilometers, and the tracking distance is 80 kilometers. If it is used for the modified version of the Hongqi-2, it should be able to guide the missile to the target within 50 kilometers. At the same time, this radar also has multi-target tracking capabilities and can lock three targets at a time and launch an attack."

With Dongfang's current capabilities, it is already very impressive to be able to intercept three targets at the same time.

"Well, this radar is also recommended to the R\u0026D team of the Hongqi-2 missile for them to use. As for the Navy's radar, it is still mainly S-band."

In later generations, the radar selection of Aegis warships experienced a long period of twists and turns. A certain institute, also from the aerospace department, focused on the C-band, which is now the G-band, because this band of radar can not only search but also complete guidance. One radar includes everything. However, the 14th Institute proposed a solution based on the S-band, because the longer the wavelength, the farther the search distance.

The Navy must choose the S-band, because the marine environment is more dangerous than on land. Land-based missiles can have the support of long-range radar from higher-level missile battalions if the radar is not far enough, but the Navy cannot deploy multiple radars.

"Because Aegis is also S-band."

Qin Yang's answer was simple and clear.

In the backward era, Dongfang had to catch up, and didn't need to find any new routes by themselves. Just follow the American route. The Americans have already crossed the river by feeling the stones, and we can just cross the river by feeling the Americans.
