#239 - Training broadcasters

Chapter 239: Training a Broadcaster

Today, only the two of them were at home. Despite the rain outside making it inconvenient to go out, Jiang Lili was exceptionally happy.

As they chatted, noon soon arrived. Noticing the small alarm clock on the table, she suddenly realized the time and quickly got up to cook.

Chen Fan stood under the eaves and looked at the sky. The rain had lessened. After thinking for a moment, he took a bamboo hat and raincoat, put on wooden clogs, and, with a bamboo stool, greeted Jiang Lili before heading out with his fishing rod and basket.

Walking onto the riverbank, the river's water level had risen significantly. The three docks where people used to draw water were submerged, revealing the second "dock" on the outer slope of the riverbank.

It was actually just a small pebble beach.

He carried his chair, sat down on the beach, scattered some rice bran mixed with wine as bait, dug up an earthworm for his hook, and began fishing.

The spring tide's river water wasn't as turbulent as in summer, but the current was still strong, rushing past quickly.

Coupled with the light rain, the weather wasn't ideal for fishing by the river.

The village's various ditches and ponds were the best spots for fishing.

However, many people were visiting ancestral graves, and he didn't want to run into anyone, so he came here to pass the time.

As expected, he sat for over half an hour without even a small fish biting.

Just as he was considering going home to get a fishing net, a voice came from the riverbank above.

"You came to the river to fish in this weather? Have you caught anything?"

Chen Fan looked back and said with a frustrated expression, "A fish was about to bite, but you scared it away."

Zhang Wenliang widened his eyes. "How is this my fault?"

He then pouted, "If you can't catch anything, just say so. Stop making useless excuses."

Upon hearing this, Chen Fan became annoyed. "Who said I can't catch anything? You just wait here and see how I catch a fish!"

He immediately picked up his chair and moved to another spot. "The feng shui was bad there. I'll fish here. Also, don't follow me. If you scare away my fish, you can't be held responsible."

Zhang Wenliang chuckled, "You've finally chosen the right spot. The river's current is strong now, and it's raining, so the fish are mostly in the shallow, grassy areas. There wasn't even a patch of grass where you were before. Where would the fish be?"

Chen Fan glanced at him. "Of course, I know. I was just bored and came to enjoy the breeze."

After a pause, he naturally changed the subject. "Are you done with your business? What are you doing here?"

Zhang Wenliang squatted on a rock, took out a cigarette, offered one to Chen Fan, and then lit his own, saying, "I only went to the ancestral ceremony at home. I don't need to visit the graves of those ancestors. Those who are married and have children will go.

Then, I discussed it with my uncle and Captain Xiao. We figured the rain wouldn't stop for the next few days, so we wanted to organize the militia for a two-day hunt to clear out the foxes, weasels, and roe deer, so they don't come out and hurt people when we clear the barren mountains to plant pasture in a few days."

Chen Fan's eyes lit up. "Great! When does it start? Tomorrow or the day after?"

Zhang Wenliang exhaled a puff of smoke, looked at him with a smile, and said, "It's tomorrow and the day after. Each squad will clear their own area, and they can keep whatever they catch."

Chen Fan nodded. "Okay, I'll inform the whole team when I broadcast this afternoon."

He then looked at Zhang Wenliang and asked curiously, "Couldn't you just call each squad about this? Why did you have to make a special trip?"

Zhang Wenliang smiled. "Everyone at home is still out, so I came to freeload a meal from you and ask whether you'll be hunting with Squad 5 or Squad 6."

Chen Fan was a member of Squad 6 but worked at the brigade headquarters, so he could join Squad 5 if he wanted. Deciding in advance would make it easier for them to arrange manpower and firearms.

Hearing Zhang Wenliang's words, Chen Fan's eyes flickered slightly. He turned to him with a smile and said, "Since I have my own gun, can't I be my own squad?"

He had the Eurasian hobby as a reconnaissance vanguard, so he would definitely be better at finding prey. If he was restricted to one squad, how could he find as much prey as in the entire brigade?

Zhang Wenliang clicked his tongue, ready to refuse, but as the words reached his lips, he suddenly had an idea and smiled. "That definitely wouldn't work for others because the prey they hunt belongs to their squad. If they could hunt in other squads' areas at will, it would be like stealing, which is why we divide the areas.

But for you, it shouldn't be a problem. All the squads have your students, and you're from the brigade headquarters, so they probably won't object."

After a pause, he looked at him and asked, "Are you really planning to go alone? Not even bringing a helper?"

Chen Fan looked at him. "How about the two of us go together?"

Seeing that Zhang Wenliang seemed tempted but also hesitant, he smiled and said, "Aren't you the militia company commander? You can patrol the entire brigade. At worst, if we really catch something, we'll just give them a share."

Chen Fan didn't really care about the prey. He just wanted the feeling of hunting.

Hearing Chen Fan say this, Zhang Wenliang nodded. "Okay, let's form a squad together."

Then, he smiled at Chen Fan. "Weren't you bragging about mastering the shooting stance? Do you want to make a bet tomorrow on who catches more prey?"

Chen Fan was about to speak when he suddenly felt movement on his fishing rod. He immediately pulled it up and saw a carp weighing about two pounds hooked on the line.

He removed the hook, put the carp in his fish basket, and grinned. "A good omen! I'm sure to win tomorrow!"

Zhang Wenliang's face fell as he looked at the carp jumping around in the basket. "Hmph, I'll eat you now."

… …

The next day, it kept raining.

Although the rain wasn't heavy, it made hunting more difficult.

But now was the best time to hunt because it wouldn't interfere with farm work. Anyway, it was inconvenient to work in the rain, so it was good to wear a raincoat and bamboo hat to go hunting.

At seven in the morning, Chen Fan turned on the radio. Hearing the occasional gunshots in the distance, he felt itchy and couldn't wait to run out immediately.

But he had to stay and watch the radio!

After a while, he suddenly had an idea and got up and ran downstairs.

In the office in front, only Zhang Wenliang was waiting for him. Even Xiao Liewen hadn't come out of his house.

Seeing Chen Fan, Zhang Wenliang couldn't help but smile. "What's wrong? Can't wait any longer? Or should we wander around Squad 5 first, and then go somewhere else after you turn off the radio?"

Chen Fan shook his head and said to him, "Is Zhang Cuie at home?"

Zhang Wenliang was slightly stunned. "You're looking for her?"

He then stood up. "What do you want her for? She should be at home now. If it's urgent, I'll go get her for you."

Chen Fan smiled. "I just want to ask her if she wants to learn how to be a broadcaster."

Zhang Wenliang was immediately stunned. "Be a broadcaster? You teach her?"

Chen Fan nodded and smiled. "That's right. If she's willing, I'll teach her how to use the radio, speak Mandarin, and even teach her how to write news reports. I guarantee I can train her to be a qualified broadcaster."

Zhang Wenliang immediately slapped his thigh, overjoyed. "That would definitely be great. Why would she be unwilling?"

After a pause, he was a little hesitant. "But, if you teach her to be a broadcaster, don't you want to do this job yourself?"

Chen Fan shook his head. "I definitely still have to do it for the time being. There's so much to learn, Zhang Cuie won't be able to learn it all in a short time. When she learns everything by the end of the year, if she can learn it all, it wouldn't be impossible to give her the broadcaster job then."
