Son of the Olden Days
Chapter 2: In the dark
It is said that there have been records in those ancient documents buried in dust that the mainland of Salvinia means ‘a land of light and fertility’.
Ironically, in the hundreds of years after entering the dark calendar, light never descended on this continent.
As for wealth, the lizardman scholar Antulun Maine, after spending most of his life travelling to many places on this continent, wrote in his travel notes:
"For most of the poor creatures on the continent of Salvinia, any form of light is a luxury. Because in this land of less than light, a torch, half a candle, or a low-level fireball magic scroll All have their not cheap prices."
It is not difficult to imagine that survival has always been a difficult topic on this dark continent all day long.
The town of Grayscreen under the famine is now full of dangers, and death is already everywhere.
The deteriorating situation did not leave Saul with too many opportunities for thoughtful thinking. Since he could not escape the town, he could only temporarily stay away from the crowd and return to the cemetery in the backyard of the monastery to hide.
The backyard of the monastery is marked by a rusty arrow-top iron fence.
The part that connects the convent hall and the ear chamber is divided into living areas for the placement of priests and orphans. The back of the living area was originally a barren wheat field, which was renovated by a monastery many years ago and turned into a cemetery to show God's protection of the world.
In Thor’s childhood memories, the cemetery in the backyard has always been a lonely place, thorny and overgrown with weeds, bleak, silent, and lifeless.
It is said that in the past, only a few people in the small town were eligible to sleep here after their deaths. They believed that while satisfying their dignity, they could be closer to God and enjoy eternal peace.
Saul disagrees.
He dug up an old tomb in the corner of the cemetery, wrapped the bones in it with a moldy tattered tablecloth and stuffed it elsewhere, and then occupied the tomb.
In this lonely corner, Sol started his life like a wild dog.
Every day, he would crawl out of the tomb quietly, wandering around searching like a ghost. Occasionally, he would venture to the small town through a dog-hole-sized gap under the rusty iron fence on the edge of the cemetery and sneak in some lanes.
Feeling tired, I lay back in the grave to sleep.
This kind of life continued until Sol accidentally discovered an abandoned dry well before he finally had the opportunity to move.
The location of the dry well is very hidden. The head of the well is hidden under the wreckage of the wagon that lost its wheels at the end of the cemetery. It is almost difficult to find if you don't lie on the ground and get under the wagon.
As long as Thor would remember, the wreckage of the wagon has been slumped there like an old forgotten story and no one cares about it.
Around the wreckage wreckage was piled up with trash that had been corrupted for many years, shrubs grew in a mess, and a few broken wine barrels were looming in the half-person-height grass. Everything was concealed naturally and just right.
The space at the bottom of the well is slightly larger than that of a prayer room in the monastery. The ground and walls are covered by dark yellow dead moss. A water source in the corner of the inner wall seems to be connected to an underground river, surrounded by moss.
Saul guessed that when people dig a well here many years ago, they dug to a certain depth and still got nothing, so they began to dig to the side to find the water source, which left the whole dry well nowadays like a boots-like weird pattern.
As for why this well will eventually run out...
Maybe everything in this world has a lifespan.
Except for some rubbles and the bones of small beasts buried in the dust, there is nothing particularly noteworthy at the bottom of the well, but for Thor, this discovery is already the only consolation in these bad days.
At least he finally no longer needs to be constantly alert to the dangers that may come at any time in the darkness, and no longer need to worry about the sudden collapse of the tomb where he can shelter one night and bury himself alive in his sleep.
Although he had a new place to stay, Saul reminded himself not to be happy for too long, after all, this only solved part of the many difficulties he faced.
Next, it was still an extremely difficult time.
Although Saul thought he had been mentally prepared enough, the dark world was still prematurely showing hideousness to a twelve-year-old child.
Obviously only a few months have passed, but Saul feels that he can't remember exactly what the food looks like.
Hunger has never given up entanglement with him for a moment, and eating enough has long been a dream.
At the most difficult moment, Thor had tasted all kinds of messy things. If he weren't worried about dying from diarrhea and poisoning, Thor had no doubt that he would gnaw all the thorns and weeds in the cemetery like a crazy locust.
In addition to physical fatigue and torture, what is more tormented is actually the inner loneliness and fear.
At first Saul could hear the screams and shouts from the monastery or the town from a certain direction from time to time, but as time passed, the whole town became quieter and quieter.
In the meantime, Thor had quietly returned to the monastery twice, but he did not meet anyone. The empty monastery seemed to have nothing left but old, as if it had been abandoned for a long time.
Sol didn't find any answers to everyone's whereabouts, he just silently returned to the dry well and continued to extend his cave dwarf-like life.
In the days when he was fighting against hunger for a long time, Thor had fallen into a coma many times because of his weakness. Even when he was awake, he was always groggy all day long, unable to distinguish between dreams and reality.
Many times, he felt that he was actually a skeleton, already dead, but he thought he was still alive.
In this kind of muddle-headedness, relying on some grass roots, hard-to-chew shrubs, strange bugs, and occasional dead mice, I didn't expect myself to support it until today.
Today is probably a certain day in the late autumn of July 14 of the Dark Calendar. A few months have passed since the plague and famine.
Originally, Thor used a dagger from a certain corpse to carve a scratch on the well wall every day to record the passage of time.
He felt that even if he finally rotted silently in this unknown dry well, he should at least remember the day he died. It is a pity that after experiencing many coma, Thor has long been unable to figure out how much his time has been stolen.
If it hadn't been for the ugly mushroom in the cemetery last night, Saul wouldn't know if he would have a chance to wake up again today.
Sometimes luck is like this, and occasionally it will suddenly pull you in, so that you can continue to live in inexplicable hope.
For the arrival of a new day, Sol has long been unmoved or touched. He knew very well that even if he had survived this autumn by chance, there would still be a terrible winter waiting behind him like an unsolvable situation.
Like a weak worm, Thor slowly struggled to get out of the pile of rags that had left his body temperature.
Feeling the hunger eased slightly, he walked to the puddle in the corner to wash his face, and then began to move at the bottom of the well while feeling the recovery of his physical strength.
Except for the dizziness of consciousness and occasional twitching of his hands and feet, his physical condition seems to be pretty good, at least he can move around.
It has been difficult to find anything of value recently when going out, and his declining body is constantly shrinking the range he can search for, but even so, he still gets out.
If you want to live, looking for food is always a constant theme.
Sol wasn't sure how long he could last in this terrible situation, so he decided to venture to the northern part of the town to try his luck today.
After making up his mind, he found a dark black hooded cloak.
This only decent piece of clothing was taken from the corpse of an adult. The hem with ragged edges and silk had been burned for most of it. Although it was worn loosely, it was just in line with the height of a child of him.
Hiding himself in the cloak, hanging the only dagger and a small old leather water bag around his waist, Thor walked towards the corner that connected the well.
He had dug out some jagged pits on the surface of the well wall. Each of them was half a foot deep into the wall. After stepping on and climbing up, he could return to the ground through the well head.
Pushing the rotten plank beneath the wreckage that concealed the mouth of the well, Thor poked out half of his head like a vigilant mouse.
Various sounds on the ground instantly rushed to his face.
The whispering of insects, the unknown sound of walking through the thorn bushes, and the whistling of weeds in the breeze, sounded like some whispers.
It seemed that it had just rained last night.
The air was filled with the fragrance of moist soil and the unique smell of decay in the cemetery.
The boundless darkness is still the unchanging background of this world. In the cemetery, there are a few stubborn and peculiar plants that emit dim light from far or near like scattered dots. They are not dazzling, but it is impossible to ignore their existence.
Every inhabitant of the continent of Salvinia will have a gray field of vision from the moment of birth, which allows people to barely see the outline of objects in their field of vision even if they are in the darkness without light.
However, the scope of this dark vision is not wide, generally only about five steps away, some people may be a little further away, depending on the person.
Old-fashioned mercenaries and hunters usually call this ability "meditation", but in Thor's view, no matter how mysterious the name is, this innate trick does not actually bring much protection for survival.
Because you can never guess what **** thing will suddenly jump out of the darkness beyond those five steps of vision, maybe when you react from the shock and consternation and prepare to do something, your head is gone.
Thor once did a test by inserting a pitchfork into the soil and standing upright on the ground, then facing the pitchfork and starting to back up.
As the distance gets farther, when the fuzzy outline of the pitchfork is about to disappear at the edge of one's field of vision, this distance is the limit of one's field of vision.
About six steps, this is the range of his dark vision, but Saul is not happy at all, because this step will be reduced as he grows up and enters adulthood.
Climbing out from under the wreckage of the carriage is actually equivalent to entering a wider darkness from a small piece of darkness, but being able to return to the ground alive again relieves Thor's increasingly heavy mood.
Standing in the cemetery, he had two choices in front of him.
You can go out from the main entrance of the monastery and walk along the main street, or you can drill through the gap under the iron fence at the edge of the cemetery as usual, and then go back to the main street after passing through some lanes.
Sol habitually chooses the second one.
For no particular reason, he knew that none of them were actually safe. For a twelve-year-old child, every time he went out might be an adventure without return.
When crossing the cemetery, there was a vague sound of joint collision in the darkness ahead.
Even if he couldn't see it, Saul knew it was a skeleton wandering in the cemetery.
In almost all places where graves are dense, a small number of skeletons will crawl out of the tomb when dawn is approaching.
They usually only wander aimlessly around their graves, and if they are left unattended, they will continue to wander forever.
The most beginners classify these dead and sleepless things as ‘undead’, but then they feel that this statement is not accurate.
Because they have long been out of the category of life, they have neither wisdom nor aggressiveness, nor can they thrive, and do not have any racial characteristics, so people later called them "wanderers" more vividly.
These special existences usually don't attract people's attention, because even a seven or eight-year-old child can make them temporarily fall into a pile with a certain amount of impact.
But if you want to truly eliminate them, you can only use purification magic, otherwise, no matter how deeply buried, there will still be a few persistent guys breaking through the ground when the dawn arrives the next day.
Over time, people have become accustomed to this strange coexistence.
The skeleton in front suddenly stopped walking.
Until Saul passed by it, it maintained a stiff stance with its head slightly bowed, and its two dark and hollow eye sockets fixedly stared at the ground.
Maybe a certain pool of **** on the ground aroused its interest, or maybe it just fell into some unknown thinking, who knows.
Sol didn't bother it, and every time he went out to search for any behavior that wasted his energy was meaningless.
In addition, Sol is actually very willing to leave a few skeletons walking around in front of his house, so that even if a daredevil inadvertently breaks into this area, he will take it for granted that there are already no living people in this cemetery. .
