Text Chapter 153: Bosnian Conflict
The second update is finished. I wish you all a happy new year.
Just as Victor's nickname "Death Merchant" suggests, Victor had just left the Republic of Serbia in Bosnia and Herzegovina when Karadzic became the president of the Republic of Serbia in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before he had even taken office, the Serbian army under Karadzic launched a military strike against Croatia and Muslims.
Serbia first seized areas where its own people were the majority. In addition to competing with Muslims for territory in the eastern Serbia-Bosnia border, the northwest region and the capital Sarajevo, Serbia also competed with Croatia in the northern area near the Croatian border. Various armed factions continued to open up new battlefields, and the war quickly spread across two-thirds of Bosnia and Herzegovina's land. Almost 200,000 people were swept into the largest local war in Europe since World War II.
Because they received military assistance from Serbia and the Soviet Union, the Bosnian Serb army, which was stronger than in history, gained a strategic advantage almost overnight. The Croatian troops, which were mainly light weapons and even had only a few tanks and armored vehicles, were no match for the Bosnian Serb troops equipped with Shilka, T54 tanks and a few Hind helicopters.
Like a burning flame sweeping across Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bosnian Serb troops soon basically controlled Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Muslim troops that clashed with the Serbian army on the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina also fought repeatedly and the Serbs soon captured most of the important cities. It took less than a week from the beginning of the war to full control. The rapid breakthrough of the Serbian troops also relied to a large extent on the intelligence provided by the Soviet Union.
The expansion of the results of the war naturally brought about the dispersion of troops. When the Serbian troops were unable to concentrate their forces to continue the attack, the weak side was revealed. Croatia's guerrillas and regular troops also began to counterattack.
Because of Yanayev's warning, the Serbs did not dare to do too much in terms of genocide, and Karadzic also repeatedly emphasized that the troops were not allowed to point their guns at civilians. Therefore, only some sporadic incidents of killing civilians were circulated in the war zone.
The unrest in Bosnia and Herzegovina naturally caused anxiety in European countries, especially the Western world led by NATO. When the Bosnian War broke out, there was a vague refugee wave. These people who moved their families because of war and racial persecution did not yearn for former socialist countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania. Instead, they went straight to Greece, and even used Italy as a springboard to flee directly to welfare countries such as France and Germany.
German Chancellor Helmut Kohl held urgent consultations and meetings with French President Francois Mitterrand and John Major on this matter. They believed that this Bosnian conflict would trigger a series of turmoil and unrest in European society, and even the European Union might be divided because of this incident.
Mitterrand sneered at this view, saying that as long as his own economy and society were in a stable state. External turmoil will not affect the ruling foundation of a country. He also emphasized that Britain, France, Germany and Bosnia and Herzegovina have no direct economic relations.
"It is easier to impose sanctions on Bosnia and Herzegovina and force them to lay down their arms and go to the negotiation table than to eat and drink." Mitterrand said with disdain, "Yugoslavia has disintegrated, and only one Republic of Serbia and one Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina are left. Do you want to reproduce the glory of Tito? Does Milosevic really think he is the savior of the Serbs? In my opinion, the current Bosnian war uses economic blockade, military sanctions and NATO military air strikes to force them to the negotiation table together."
"I agree with you that Croatia and Muslims want to go to the negotiation table, but the Serbs don't think so. Now their weapons have an absolute advantage. If they don't take advantage of this period to recover most of the territory, then after the agreement is signed, they will never have a chance to get back the lost territory from the Croatians."
As the British spokesperson for Europe's troublemakers, Major can naturally hope that this refugee wave can affect France and Germany, and then he can benefit from it across the English Channel.
"The peace talks may be a long and arduous process. Why don't we discuss how to accommodate the refugees who suddenly poured into Western Europe?" Major asked.
"Wouldn't it be the same to put an end to the refugee crisis if we stopped the war?" German Chancellor Kohl, who had seen through what Major was thinking, asked back, "When the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina stabilizes, these people will be repatriated to Bosnia and Herzegovina immediately. We have a record of every refugee who enters Germany. Why don't we sit down and have a good talk about how to make the Serbs surrender."
Kohl smiled slyly at the British Prime Minister, indicating that this was not the time to play tricks on the other party. Major, who had seen through his little tricks, just smiled slightly and didn't care at all.
"I'm still talking about the same old thing. Air strikes, economic blockades, and military strikes are integrated. Even if Serbia has a steel torrent comparable to that of the Soviet Union, it can't escape the power of aerial bombs."
"But have you two thought of one thing?" German Chancellor Kohl suddenly said this for no reason.
"What's the matter?" Major and Mitterrand asked in unison.
"That's the Soviet Union's statement on the matter. Such a big thing happened, even the White House expressed its concern in the news, but why is the Soviet Union silent?" Cole asked with some doubts. Any matter that the Soviet Union showed a phenomenon that violated the norm meant that the Soviet Union and the West had different ideas.
Cole's words made Mojie and Mitterrand feel depressed. At the same time, an ominous premonition came to their minds.
"I wonder if there is a shadow of the Soviet Union behind the Serbian army in this civil war?" Cole whispered.
...
In the office of the director of the CIA, Robert Gates was holding a piece of intelligence from Europe. The intelligence showed that before the war broke out, a Russian international arms dealer had appeared in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Then an armed conflict broke out in Bosnia and Herzegovina. And this businessman, nicknamed "Death Trafficker", was also on the list of special people supervised by the CIA.
"This guy is really capable. He has been to Mozambique, and then the civil war in Mozambique suddenly became fierce, and the peace agreement that was originally to be signed was also invalidated. He has been to the jungles of Colombia, and then the drug trafficking groups there even had armed helicopters, becoming the most troublesome anti-government organization for the government. And this time he appeared in Serbia and Bosnia, and then the civil war in Yugoslavia started. No wonder this man is called the merchant of death. His sales are as accurate as the wedge aimed at the occurrence of war. I am curious about how this guy did it?" Gates muttered to himself.
"The body of the last Interpol personnel who was tracking down evidence of his crimes in the high seas of the Indian Ocean was found in the waters near Mogadishu. It is said that he was robbed by pirates and all the information he carried with him was stolen. Haha, this guy is really interesting." Gates flipped through the intelligence in his hand page by page. There are many deeds about this legendary figure in the arms industry. It is said that his friends range from drug dealers in the tropical rainforests of South America to the People's Armed Front on the grasslands of Africa. He can always use money and arms to connect with these people. The near-perfect sales record is also attracting the United States, the old rival of the Soviet Union. They also need such talents to increase income for the country's coffers.
"Assistant, please send this person's identity information to our European database. I want you to try to keep an eye on this person's whereabouts." Gates's battle-hardened eyes gradually became sharp. He took Victor's surrender and whispered, "If I'm not mistaken, this person has the influence of a superpower behind him."
The Soviet Union's secret competition in this incident naturally has their own purpose, so Gates must know what Victor's ultimate goal is.
"I have a hunch that Europe will be turned upside down by this person in the future." Victor whispered. (~^~)
