#46 - 46. Black Corridor
"Playing me, huh? You really are something."
Lin Ye walked into the red corridor, starting to check the room numbers. The red light shone on each door, seemingly reminding Lin Ye that each time he opened a door, he was gambling with his life.
‘Good thing I have ten lives. Even a nine-lived cat can’t outlive me.’
Readying his psionic defense, Lin Ye casually pushed open a door.
This time, there was nothing attacking Lin Ye behind the door, but the internal condition of the room was quite bad.
The dark red walls and floor were covered with red fluff. In the center of the room stood a corpse covered in red fluff.
‘Go in, or open another door?’
Lin Ye thought for a moment and quickly walked into the room. This room didn't seem particularly aggressive, and just entering and exiting might not be dangerous.
As Lin Ye expected, the fluff and the corpse in the room didn't attack him, but when he tried to open the door again, he couldn't leave the room as quickly as planned.
Because outside the door was a pitch-black corridor.
No, to be precise, outside the door was complete darkness. He couldn't see anything.
Not just visually, even his senses couldn't penetrate that darkness. Lin Ye couldn't even be sure if there was a corridor inside.
Lin Ye knew he had to enter the darkness and open the door opposite, the one where he couldn't even see the room number, but before the darkness, he hesitated for the first time in a long while.
The fear of darkness is human instinct.
It wasn't until the corpse behind him pressed close to his back that Lin Ye entered that darkness.
He tried to open the door opposite, but didn't touch anything. If the corridor was of the same dimensions, he should have been able to touch the opposite door with the distance he'd moved.
Lin Ye hurriedly retreated, but the room behind him had disappeared.
‘Is this the deeper corridor the attendant was talking about?’
Lin Ye squatted down in the darkness, groping forward. There was no particular smell here, and he couldn't hear any sound when he tapped the ground. With his vision and senses failing, touch was almost his only connection to this world.
After crawling on the hard ground for five minutes without touching anything, Lin Ye knew he couldn't continue like this.
‘Actually, I should have changed my approach when the room behind me disappeared.’
The door opposite was right in front of him. The grain of light was about to go out. Lin Ye lunged for the handle and pushed open the door to room 99 before being swallowed by the darkness.
Stumbling and crawling into room 99, Lin Ye had no time to observe the room's environment, nor did he have time to turn around, and closed the door with his back against it.
Just as Lin Ye was about to open the door to exit the room, a large amount of thick red fluff spurted out of his pores and was sucked into the air. After all the fluff was expelled, Lin Ye's body, like a specimen with its contents emptied, fell to the ground.
Only then did Lin Ye have time to observe the situation inside the room, after all, there was no need for him to rush now.
Room 99 was a black cube-shaped space. A pitch-black spherical object of unknown material rotated in the center of the room. The red fluff was swirling around the sphere, constantly dissipating into the air.
Lin Ye didn't know if he should be grateful, because if he hadn't been parasitized by the fluff, he would be the one being absorbed now. Of course, other than being able to survive a little longer, there was actually no difference.
‘Waiting like this seems like a bit of a waste of time.’
Although Lin Ye's contents had been drained, he didn't die immediately. This was probably thanks to the red fluff.
Lin Ye wanted to crawl out of the room, but found that there was some kind of gravitational pull inside the room. This pull wasn't strong, just enough to prevent Lin Ye from crawling out in his current state.
The sphere still needed some time to absorb the fluff. Lin Ye didn't want to waste time, so he took the initiative to crawl towards the sphere. He had some extra thoughts, but not many, after all, he was struggling to even lift his hand now.
If it weren't for the sphere's gravitational pull, he wouldn't even be able to crawl.
Lin Ye crawled to directly below the sphere, turned over, looked at the constantly rotating sphere above, and began to inscribe the Collapse Rune.
He wasn't sure if this would work, but it was better than waiting to die.
Moreover, for a constantly rotating system, perhaps a little external force could cause it to collapse.
This was Lin Ye's first time using the Collapse Rune in actual combat. Zede's body wasn't very useful, but after the Carnival Feast, Lin Ye had a new understanding of the concept of collapse, so he could barely use it.
Then Lin Ye's body collapsed.
In the collapse, Lin Ye looked at the rotating sphere and gained some new knowledge.
… … … … … …
[Remaining Simulation Attempts: 7]
Lin Ye got out of bed and put on his clothes. This time he planned to go to Corridor 3.
With seven simulation attempts remaining and four corridors left, he planned to visit each corridor once.
If he still couldn't find the pattern, he might confront the organization and try to rely on them to get through this simulation. The pattern he couldn't find wouldn't even be considered a problem for the organization.
But this was an extremely dangerous choice, because for the organization, he was an untrustworthy anomaly. Compared to negotiation, control and elimination were the best solutions.
Moreover, negotiation requires equality. No one will negotiate with the weak. For the organization, Lin Ye was the weak one.
So Lin Ye felt that the outcome of this choice wouldn't be too good.
But he had no choice. Thousands of rooms, arranged randomly, with the possibility of death every time he opened a door. If he couldn't find the pattern, he couldn't possibly find room 1904, let alone leave the cruise ship within an hour.
Ready, Lin Ye followed the supervisors downstairs.
As before, Lin Ye and the others boarded the cruise ship.
“Do you have any mathematicians? Or anyone with a math-related illness?”
Although they didn't look like it, Lin Ye asked just to be safe before entering Corridor 3.
“Ah? I… I didn’t go to school…”
The woman looked at Lin Ye strangely. Since boarding the ship, this man had been a bit strange.
“I graduated elementary school, but I know simple arithmetic.”
The little boy felt that Lin Ye knew some information, and hurriedly stated his advantage so as not to be abandoned by Lin Ye.
“……Oh, that’s really amazing. You guys stay close… I… Wait, don’t go in, I’ll go in and switch the boxes, you guys wait outside!”
Lin Ye said urgently, grabbing his hair.
Only now did he realize that the variables weren't just the room numbers, or the order in which the rooms were opened. They were the biggest variable!
If three people went in together, they would be assigned to different corridors. If each person was a variable, then the arrangement pattern of the rooms would become incredibly chaotic, and even if he was good at math, he couldn't calculate it!
This was why he hadn't been able to find the room arrangement pattern!
