The Emperor’s Angel of Death
#2746 - Web spider
Chapter 2739: The Spider in the Web
Although he believed he had a sufficient understanding of life, he often felt like a stranger to himself.
For example, why would he return here? As Fabius returned to his childhood home in Ingolstadt, the sun hanging in the Terran sky was gradually setting, and the night announced its arrival with the rising of the moon.
His body still bore traces of sweat and dirt from the afternoon's training, a trial every noble boy had to endure. From a young age, besides learning knowledge, martial arts training was also crucial.
However, he was still a beginner, and he wasn't interested in it.
Every day after class, he would secretly trek to a secret 'laboratory' in the steep hills south of the manor. Although he was exhausted, on the verge of collapsing at any moment, he still had an incredible fascination with biological knowledge.
Compared to swords, he preferred scalpels, and compared to obsequious servants, he preferred rats that could reveal the secrets of life.
But today seemed impossible. His face was swollen, a lesson from his father's anger, because of his clumsy martial skills. As the son of a Knight-Commander, he should have been outstanding.
But he had clearly disappointed his father.
So, after returning to the manor, he didn't eat, but instead went to the roof, quietly gazing at the sky, craning his neck to look at the shimmering stars above, which gave him a deep and lasting sense of purpose.
"If there's any chance, I can do it."
Fabius muttered to himself, reaching out as if to grasp the stars.
"I must do it. They're all fools."
Then, he woke up.
The renowned Apothecary of the Third Legion lay quietly for a moment, trying to figure out what sound had disturbed his sleep.
But whatever it was, it had already entered the cell, without even leaving an echo.
Fabius, wearing a plain prisoner's uniform, slowly sat up. The room was terrifyingly dark, but not made of wraithbone. Clearly, someone knew him well, knowing he was familiar with wraithbone. The entire room was made of a black, cold rock. The knowledgeable Fabius guessed that this might be the so-called 'blackstone,' a special material that could isolate the Warp, seemingly from a non-living race, the Necrons.
Fabius was an expert in biology, but he hadn't done much research in materials science, including physics. He didn't hate machines, but he wasn't proficient in them, except for making some small tools.
Choosing to imprison him with this stuff was indeed clever.
Being imprisoned in a completely dark environment for nearly a year was enough to drive most people crazy, but Fabius had encountered worse situations than this. At least it hadn't exceeded his limit of tolerance yet.
He sat on his cold metal bed, seemingly facing the entrant, and said casually:
"At least you could light a candle."
With a snap of a finger, the blackstone cell filled with warm light, and the light came from two floating orbs.
Fabius blinked, adjusting to the light, and now he could see the visitor clearly.
A tall giant, with the standard Astartes physique, a solemn and handsome face, glossy skin, black eyes, and short, straight black hair. The robe he wore was simple and understated, but it was woven from the finest Eldar voidsilk, meticulously crafted, but not ostentatious.
More importantly, his appearance. Fabius glimpsed countless secrets from it. A game that might allow him to show his skills was already in front of him.
"Who are you?"
Suddenly, the giant asked in a deep voice, and Fabius replied softly:
"My name is Fabius."
With a sneer, Sotha coldly said:
"What proof do you have that you are Fabius? There are many Fabius in the galaxy. Who is the real one?"
The corners of Fabius's mouth turned up slightly.
"We all are."
Sotha narrowed his eyes.
"How do I know I'm talking to a clone with an independent mind, or to Fabius himself."
"These are all irrelevant. Each is Fabius, each has their own experiences, and the real Fabius you speak of is already dead."
"What an incurable madman, but you lied, Spider. You are not dead, you are hiding in the web you weave, a web woven from wraithbone knowledge stolen from the Eldar."
"Oh, from the Eldar."
Fabius very humanely curled his lips.
"Chapter Master Sotha, it seems that the Eldar Queen's gentle embrace has given you some sense of belonging. Although I also admire their art and fleshcrafting techniques, I must say it's a bit...too farcical."
Sotha walked to the side, and suddenly Fabius was choked by a huge force and lifted into the air, while his original bed began to melt and deform, eventually turning into a huge chair.
The moment Sotha sat on the chair, Fabius fell heavily and coughed violently. A clear bruise mark appeared on his neck.
"Spider, don't play the talented and arrogant in front of me. Fulgrim, that waste, doesn't dare to kill you, but I do. If death can't scare you, then I have other means to concoct you, such as the Necron's dimensional prison, which is a good place where you have endless time to think about the past."
Fabius was on all fours, kneeling on the ground, and after panting for a moment, he straightened up and sat back on the ground.
"This is not psychic power."
He touched his neck, his voice hoarse, but his eyes were burning, not asking, but craving for something unknown.
"...No wonder Fulgrim is also afraid of your power. What exactly is the gray marrow? What secrets do the lost legions and primarchs hold?"
"These are easy to say, but what can you tell me?"
Fabius gently gathered the withered white hair behind his head and said slowly:
"Your Highness, Phoenix Lord, could you grant me some food to fill my empty stomach?"
Sotha stared at him, and after a moment, nodded slightly.
"Good."
In less than thirty seconds, the door of the blackstone cage opened, and a team of armored Eldar soldiers walked in. A low table appeared in front of Fabius, and then a delicious and sumptuous meal appeared on the small table, steaming hot.
Fabius didn't stand on ceremony, rubbed his palms and approached the food. One of the plates contained a roasted aquatic animal from a feral world, its skin roasted to a unique golden glow. Next to it was a plate of thick Megalodon meat, dripping with brown honey. There were also opened and roasted shellfish, unique root vegetables, a bowl of cold cuts made of vegetables and fruits, and a pitcher almost full of wine and an empty glass.
