The Iron Throne of Ice and Fire

Chapter 49 Government Affairs Department 2

Green ended the conversation after adding some more details about the Queens District.

After Foley and Layton left, Green came to the Red Castle again with his guards and entered the Government Affairs Hall.

The Government Affairs Hall adjacent to the Prime Minister's Tower is where the subordinate officials who serve as important ministers in the Royal Council handle the daily government affairs of the kingdom.

During the Targaryen dynasty, when there was no royal council, the ministers usually handled the kingdom's government affairs in their respective offices in the Government Hall.

After the Baratheon Dynasty, King Robert was greedy for pleasure and handed over the power to the king. After Duke Jon, he no longer cares about political affairs and spends his days drunk and dreaming.

In order to express his dissatisfaction with the king, Stannis Baratheon, the Lord of the Sea and King Robert's second brother, handled government affairs directly at Dragonstone Castle on Dragonstone Island.

Renly Baratheon, the Minister of Justice and King Robert's third brother, has no interest in the government affairs of the kingdom. Apart from occasionally attending royal meetings, he is not seen in the Red Keep.

As the Queen's Prime Minister, Lord Jon Arryn, ages year by year, he is rarely seen outside the Prime Minister's Tower.

Therefore, in the Government Affairs Office, which is the central power of the kingdom after the Royal Council, the only important ministers who can often be seen are Petit Albarich, the Minister of Finance, Varys, the Chief of Intelligence, and Pycelle, the Chief Bachelor of the Royal Society.

Grand Maester Pycelle was a former Targaryen vassal who was retained by King Robert after the Reaver War.

Maester Pycelle's main responsibility is to serve as the king's advisor. He is usually responsible for the compilation of various books and the organization of knowledge. He is also in charge of the Red Keep's crow communications and is also the chief physician of the palace.

Because King Robert was apolitical, Maester Pycelle became an advisor to Lord Jon, Hand of the King.

Under the guidance of the attendant at the Government Affairs Office, Green quickly arrived at the office of Finance Minister Petyr.

Petyr's office has the same gold-framed round window as the Prime Minister's study, with Myr carpets on the floor and exquisite tapestries on the walls.

Green glanced at the exquisite furnishings in the room and seemed to smell the smell of a golden dragon.

Petyr saw Green put down the quill in his hand and leaned back on the chair with a smile on his face: "Oh, isn't this Baron Green? I've been waiting for you, please sit down!"

Petyr ordered the attendant to move a chair across from the table.

Green stroked his chest and saluted: "Good day, Lord Petyr."

After saluting, Green sat down.

Petyr returned the greeting with a smile, and waved his hand for the attendant to exit the room.

After the attendant left the room and closed the door, Petyr said, "I heard what happened in the study today. Duke Jon fell ill again."

Green spread his hands: "No matter who encounters this kind of thing, he will be very angry. Is the Duke's condition not serious?"

Petyr raised the corners of his lips elegantly, leaning on the back of the chair with a relaxed posture: "On behalf of Duke Jon, I would like to thank you for your concern. Maester Pycelle has been treated carefully. It is said that he will be bedridden for at least seven days this time."

Petyr's back left the back of the chair, his upper body leaned forward slightly, and he lowered his voice: "Thanks to you this time, otherwise we may never know that there is a third ear hidden in the Prime Minister's study."

Petyr sounded completely like we are one of our own.

Green's tone was calm: "Has the Duke made any arrangements for the follow-up?"

There was a hint of sarcasm in Petyr's tone: "I heard that a tunnel was discovered after going deep into the mezzanine. Duke Jon handed over the subsequent investigation to Lord Janos, the commander-in-chief in gold robes."

The City Watch were also known as the Golden Robes, after the golden wool cloaks they wore over their armor.

The Golden Robes are the garrison and enforcers of King's Landing, loyal only to the royal family. The Capital Guard has two military camps in the east and west of King's Landing. The eastern military camp is near the Dragon Gate, and the western military camp is near Shoemaker's Square.

In the past, the number of Golden Robes had always been 2,000. After Lord Janos Slynt was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the City Guard by King Robert, he tripled the number of Golden Robes to 6,000. However, Many of these 6,000 people are drunkards and homeless people with low combat effectiveness.

It is rumored that basically half of the officers in the City Guard pay him money from their own salaries every month.

After Lord Jon Arryn found out about this, he found two people who were willing to testify against him, but the two men were found killed soon after.

Although Lord Jon Arryn still wanted to remove Janos Slynt from his position, King Robert stepped forward to retain Lord Janos Slynt's position as Lord Commander of the City Watch.

Green smiled: "The old Duke's eyes are very accurate in seeing people."

Petyr shrugged his shoulders gracefully, making no comment.

After a pause, Green said: "This morning, the reason why the Duke saw me made me very embarrassed. Without direct evidence, he insisted on asking me to bear the crime based on a song sung in the Crab Claw Peninsula."

Green's brown eyes met Petyr's gray-green eyes, and his tone seemed helpless: "This makes me very embarrassed. If the Sea Lord was here, I wouldn't have to face such difficulties. I heard that he is very fair."

Petyr's gray-green eyes moved slightly: "Sea Lord Lord Stannis?"

Green nodded: "Duke Stannis advocates the rule of law, and his reputation for being meticulous about the law spreads far and wide throughout the Seven Kingdoms. Now I'm afraid everyone knows that there are no secrets in the Prime Minister's study. I'm worried that he will hear about this injustice. The upright Stannis The Duke of Nice would ask regardless of Duke Jon’s health.”

The smile on Petyr's face deepened and he nodded in agreement: "You are right to worry. Duke Stannis has always been too upright. Even Duke Jon, who is seriously ill, cannot shake his will. He can only hope. The secrets of the Hand's study will no longer reach Dragonstone."

As he spoke, Petyr was secretly reflecting on himself, why he, who was always careful, would ignore the existence of Lord Stannis.

It seems that it is not just Petyr himself, because Petyr himself is a person involved and he can confirm that no one is deliberately planning such a thing, but the entire Red Keep seems to have ignored the existence of Duke Stannis.

If Baron Green hadn't mentioned it to him today, he believed that he would have continued to ignore Lord Stannis unintentionally.

Why does this happen? invisible Man? Unknown magic?
