#107 - Chapter 31 I’m Back Again
The Shivering Sea stretches from the eastern coast of Westeros, located in the vast ocean north of Essos. It is said that the depths of the Shivering Sea are filled with frigid temperatures year-round, causing the sea surface to freeze rapidly upon entry, preventing ships from retreating. Legends also mention pale blue ice fogs that freeze any ship they encounter as they drift across the water, hence the name Shivering Sea.
Northwest of the Braavosian Atoll lies the intersection of the Shivering Sea and the Narrow Sea. Liu Yuan's fleet has arrived here. Previously, his team had divided into two groups, with twenty-four three-masted sailing ships loaded with craftsmen and their families, entering Blackwater Bay via the Narrow Sea.
The other twenty-eight ships continued north. To the east from here are the Lorath Islands, and further east are the Axe Peninsula and Bitterweed Bay. Along the coast of the Shivering Sea are the Sarne River Delta, the Kingdom of Omber, and the Bay of Claws. East of the Bay of Claws lies the forest-covered multiple kingdoms of Ifequevron. North of these kingdoms are the Ibbenese Islands. The Jhogwin nation is located between the Shivering Sea and the科拉扎吉·扎斯克(科拉扎吉·扎斯克: Qorazh Zhaszak). Continuing east are the Sea of Sighs, the Thousand Islands, N'Ghai, and the wooded Mossovy.
Here, at the edge of the known world,科利斯·瓦列利安(科利斯·瓦列利安: Corlys Velaryon) was the first Westerosi to explore the Shivering Sea, reaching as far as the Thousand Islands. Brian of Oldtown also sailed to the Shivering Sea, but there are few records of places further beyond, and even fewer legends. It is unknown whether those kingdoms still exist.
In the world of Ice and Fire, monsoons also exist, but they often become erratic and disordered in winter, blowing ships deep into the Shivering Sea. Generally, from March to September, the Shivering Sea experiences southeast monsoons. Liu Yuan's fleet is currently sailing with a favorable wind. Westerosi large ships are typically non-full-rigged square-sailed ships, capable of reaching speeds of eight to ten knots in favorable winds. Bandier pointed west and said, "My lord, I have sailed this route several times. Over there are the Fingers and the Bite. White Harbor, belonging to House Manderly, is also in that direction. Most of the North's trade activities are concentrated there."
Liu Yuan said, "It's too far. We will mainly operate further north in the future, so there's no need to contact them."
The fleet continued sailing for seven days, reaching a point close to land, a large cliff called Grey Cliffs. Located on the coast east of Karhold, the cliffs are barren due to constant sea wind erosion and have no development value.
Grigg was already excited. After passing this cliff coast, they would enter Seal Bay. He could faintly see the island of Skagos to the north. He had been away from his hometown for over a year. As they got closer, Grigg could not contain his excitement. He leaned over the ship's rail and shouted, "Ah~! Skagos! I'm back!"
Suddenly, a large fleet appeared. The people on the island were not blind and immediately became alert, rushing to the shore. Although Skagos is close to the Westerosi mainland, the waters near the mainland are full of reefs, making the nearby waterways quite dangerous. The Northmen's nautical technology is very backward, and they have few ships. Skagos is also too poor to be of interest. After the great war a hundred years ago, the Stark family even left their own duke to die on the island and completely forgot about it.
Few outsiders come here, and sometimes not a single ship is seen for years. The fleet sailed around the outside of the island, entering the bay connecting the north and west of the island under Grigg's guidance. According to Grigg, this place is called Skinners Bay. Long ago, their ancestors would skin their prey here after hunting. Liu Yuan looked at the island of Skane behind him and remembered the " Skane feast" described in the books. Tsk tsk tsk, what were those skinned prey? It's obvious!
Skinners Bay is not suitable as a landing point, as large ships cannot dock, although the water is deep enough. If they want to utilize this place, they must clear the surrounding area and build a port. Under Liu Yuan's orders, countless small boats were lowered.
The small boats landed a large number of soldiers on the shore. The first to jump ashore was Grigg. Before he could express a few heroic words: "Hahaha~ I'm finally... Ouch~ Damn... Why are you all laughing! Come and pull me!" His heavy body sank into the soft sand, and the nearby soldiers looked at him with a foolish gaze. Such a large guy, fully armed, almost overturned the small boat earlier. Seeing Grigg make a fool of himself, everyone laughed unkindly.
Laughing aside, they still had to help. Fortunately, there were many people, and a dozen soldiers worked together to pull him out of the sand pit. Grigg was embarrassed and directed the soldiers to set up a defensive perimeter to protect the landing site.
More than sixty small boats could transport more than five hundred soldiers at a time. Subsequent soldiers would land with supplies. After the fourth wave, there were more than twelve hundred soldiers on shore. Grand Commander Bick began to direct the soldiers to establish a camp. The nearby forest was lush and could provide ample timber. He waved his hand, and a team of soldiers went to cut down trees with axes.
As for Grigg, he had another mission. Five squads were separated from the guard camp to protect him home. Skinners Bay is located at the border between the territories of the Stane clan and theクラウラー(クラウラー: Crowl) clan. There used to be many small tribes living near here, but now they are nowhere to be seen. Grigg was also very worried. It had been more than a year since he was captured, and he didn't know what the situation was now.
On Skagos, which is covered with hills and forests, cavalry is difficult to deploy, and the outstanding gladiators of the guard camp are more likely to perform.
Located in the north of the island, a fortress stands on a slope surrounded by forest. The tall walls are made of logs. Only smeared with mud on the outside, it froze hard in the northern cold wind, and over the years it has become like rock. This is the base camp of the Stane clan, Driftwood Hall, which tightly guards a mountain pass. Behind Driftwood Hall is a basin enclosed in a valley, where the climate is much warmer than outside. It is one of the few places on Skagos where grain can be grown. The Stane clan has relied on the grain here to survive countless harsh winters, and has developed into one of the three major clans.
The master of the castle,莱德·斯特恩(莱德·斯特恩: Ryder Stane), is also the current patriarch of the entire Stane clan. He was patrolling the city wall at this time. Already in his fifties, he was no longer young, but he still had to take responsibility. Since a year ago, several hunting teams of the clan have been ambushed, and even his own son Grigg has disappeared.
