#110 - Chapter 34: Small Battle (I)
Torren Magnar spoke, "Baelish, what are your thoughts on the enemy's unusual actions?"
Baelish was a man in his thirties, with the typical appearance of a Northman. He was originally a Free Rider, but due to his excellent weaponry, he was recruited by Roose Bolton and appointed as the master-at-arms of the Dreadfort. He was one of Roose Bolton's absolute confidants, someone he could send to do dirty work.
Baelish said dismissively, "Torren 'Ser', you're being too anxious. There's no need to worry about such trivial matters. The Crowl and Stane clans have already suffered heavy losses. Even if they unite again, so what? We'll just fight them again and wipe them all out. The warriors of House Bolton fear nothing!" He raised his glass as he finished speaking, and the Bolton soldiers beside him also raised their glasses and cheered, "Fear nothing!"
"Boom!" Along with their cheers, a thunderous crash shook the entire hall. A Magnar guard pushed open the door and shouted, "Chieftain, Chieftain, we're under attack! There are ships outside, huge ships!"
Everyone in the hall rushed outside, no longer caring about anything else. When they ran out, they saw several meteor-like fireballs flying from afar in the sky. Fires had started in both the castle and the village below. People looked up and saw five three-masted sailing ships blocking the harbor entrance, using catapults on their decks to hurl fireballs at King's Hall. The pale skull on the black sails was strikingly conspicuous.
Baelish's eyes were bloodshot because he saw two longships burning in the harbor. He grabbed a soldier beside him and roared, "Go! Send people to put out the fire. Those are Lord Bolton's property. If they're destroyed, I'll skin you alive!" The soldier ran away in a panic, but unfortunately, before he could run far, a fireball from the sky landed right next to his feet, and the splashing oil instantly turned him into a torch. A piercing scream echoed, sending chills down everyone's spines, and people scrambled to find something to use as a shield.
Torren, being the chieftain, saw that the enemy only had these five ships, and the harbor was already ablaze, preventing them from landing. He calmly directed the guards to put out the fires everywhere, disregarding the small fishing boats in the harbor. As for the two burning longships, they were Bolton's property; he didn't care about them.
After launching fireballs for a while, the five ships on the sea finally stopped their attack. They gracefully turned in unison and sailed northeast, leaving behind a devastated harbor with burning wooden houses everywhere, and the cries of men mingled with the wails of women and children.
Fortunately, the enemy did not continue the attack, and the chaos caused by the catapults gradually subsided. The number of casualties was not high, but the harbor was completely destroyed, and all the ships were burned to ashes.
Those ships were flying black sails, they must be pirates from the south. Although it was unknown why they were mixed with the other two clans, how many people could they muster? Torren was no longer afraid. At worst, they would go to war. The Magnar clan had over ten thousand people, with four to five thousand living near King's Hall. He could mobilize three thousand warriors at once, and with some affiliated small tribes, raising five thousand would not be a problem. After this battle, the entire Skagos Island would once again be under the rule of the Magnar clan! And he would be the King of 'Stoneborn'!
Baelish led his men to the harbor, looking at the longships that had been burned to charcoal. He knelt on the ground in despair and muttered, "It's over, it's all over! How am I going to explain this to Lord Bolton!" Two longships! Roose Bolton had painstakingly built only ten longships, and two of them were destroyed right under his nose. He shuddered at the thought of how Lord Roose Bolton would deal with him.
Torren walked up to him and said stiffly, "Those pirates must have been hired by the other two major clans. I have decided to go to war with them! This time, I will concentrate all my strength to defeat them once and for all. You must also participate in the war."
Baelish was stunned and said angrily, "How dare you order me? You need to understand that we are Lord Bolton's soldiers. We are here to help you, not to be your subordinates."
Torren spat at him disdainfully, "Pah! You're the one who doesn't understand! Your ships have been burned, and you have no way to retreat. If we fail in this war against the enemy, what will happen to you? Besides, our food will be used to feed the warriors. If you don't participate, go catch fish in the sea!"
"You~!…" Baelish glared at Torren angrily, reaching for the hilt of his sword. Torren didn't care about House Bolton anymore. The Magnar clansmen immediately surrounded them, holding various weapons and glaring at them fiercely. Baelish swallowed the curse words, trembling with anger.
Torren said indifferently, "Baelish, you have one last chance. As long as you fully cooperate with me in battle and eliminate all the enemies, if we can capture the pirate ships, half of them will be given to you. As long as you hand them over to Lord Bolton, it will be enough to exempt you from punishment."
Baelish thought carefully. One of those three-masted sailing ships was enough to buy four longships. If he presented it to Lord Bolton, he might even get a reward. He nodded and said, "Okay, I agree. I and my soldiers will fully cooperate with you in battle. Torren 'Ser', please remember your promise, we want half of the ships."
Torren said, "We Skagosi value promises the most. After the battle is won, all captured ships will be divided in half for you." He thought to himself, 'Dream on! How are you going to seize the ships? If they can't win against the pirates, can't they run away? Go chase them by swimming!' He was using the ships to trick these Bolton soldiers into fighting for him. How many of them will survive after the battle? Heh heh…
The five ships were sent by Liu Yuan, with the aim of sinking both the Magnar and Bolton ships, and then trapping and annihilating them. After subduing the two major clans, he had a deeper understanding of Skagos Island. The conflicts between the various tribes were basically on a scale of a hundred people. A battle of four or five hundred people was considered a major war. Even the last battle between the three major clans only slightly exceeded two thousand people. It was a bit of an overkill for him to lead such a large army here. He turned his head and glared fiercely at Grig, "I came to avenge you, but if I had known that you were just fighting like this, I wouldn't have gone to Slaver's Bay. Leading the guards would have been enough, and I wouldn't have needed to borrow troops from the Saathos family."
Grig scratched his head innocently, "Boss, I'm wronged! You didn't say what you were going to do in the first place. I've been listening to you all the way, and besides, you didn't ask!" The shape of Skagos Island looks like a '丩' from above, divided into three parts: north, west, and middle.
