#112 - Chapter 36: Small Battle (Part 3)

The elders of the Magner clan stepped forward from their ranks, standing at the very front. With their aged bodies, they unflinchingly faced the enemy's rain of arrows, clearing a path for the younger ones behind.

Bailey held his shield overhead. "Crack!" A bodkin arrow pierced the shield, the arrowhead stopping just inches from his nose. Just as he was celebrating his luck, another arrow shot past his ear, hitting the face of the soldier behind him squarely. The nasal guard of the commonly used Northern arc-faced half-helm was absent, and the shovel-like arrowhead struck the bridge of his nose. The man collapsed in agony. Unable to die instantly, he struggled, bumping into those around him and disrupting the formation, resulting in more men being hit by arrows. Bailey decisively sliced open the man's throat with his sword.

The Magner side also had archers, but their bows mostly used bone and bronze arrowheads, which were fine for hunting but had limited armor-piercing capabilities. Many Dothraki warriors had already stowed their bows, drawing their scimitars in preparation for close combat. Those in the rear raised their horse bows, launching arrows in a parabolic arc at the Magner men behind.

Much happened in just a few minutes. The warriors on both sides had clashed. The Magner warriors used their bodies to ram the shields. Countless spears thrust out from between the shields, their sharp points easily piercing holes in human bodies. Two iron spikes at the bottom of the tower shields were driven into the ground to secure them, but the Magner hunters could not move them an inch when they threw their weight against them. Some tried to lift the shields, only to have their hands cut to ribbons by the sharp edges.

Maces and axes slammed against the shields, but even the outermost layer of iron could not be breached. In return, they were met with a wave of spears. The combination of close- and long-range attacks resulted in many Magner men being killed, their bodies riddled with holes in a gruesome manner! Some more agile Magner men used their hands and feet to climb over the shield wall. But as soon as they landed, before they could even get up and start wreaking havoc, they were swarmed by nearby soldiers and chopped into mincemeat.

On the rearmost eight chariots, large skin drums were mounted. Several bare-chested men rhythmically beat the drums. "Boom! Boom-boom!" The rousing war drums inspired the clan warriors to roar, for they had never fought such an exhilarating battle. They launched a wave-like attack from both flanks, causing the opposing Magner men to retreat in disarray.

Bailey clutched his injured left arm, retreating into the crowd. A dozen Bolton soldiers were still with him. Not long ago, he had led the Bolton soldiers in a fight against the enemy. Both sides had used spears and large shields, and it would not have been easy to determine the victor. But unexpectedly, the enemy's front-row soldiers suddenly lowered their bodies, and countless warriors wielding short spears emerged from behind them. They immediately hurled the spears, which were about an arm's length long and had extremely sharp, three-edged heads. Whether it was a two-finger-thick shield or iron armor, they were basically pierced with a single strike. Just three volleys shattered the Bolton soldiers' ranks.

Bailey's injury was caused when a short spear pierced his shield, also piercing his arm. The Bolton soldiers' formation was broken, and they were immediately overrun by the surging Magner men behind. As for how many survived, he didn't know. Only a dozen or so were still with him.

Bailey had only one thought: "Escape, get out of here! I can't die. Only by leaving here can I survive." He thought that the people on the other side would give the Bolton family some face and spare their lives. He didn't know how long it had been, but they were already nearing the edge of the battlefield.

Bailey sighed, glancing back at the battlefield. But he couldn't really see anything, just a dense mass of heads. However, listening to the sounds of fighting all around, he felt that their side was about to be surrounded. Just as Bailey was about to plunge into the mountains, he clearly felt the ground trembling. His face turned pale. Those barbarians didn't know what this meant, but he did! This was the sound of warhorses galloping during a cavalry charge, but where did horses come from on the island?

Accompanied by a roaring sound, a group of fully armored knights appeared. He saw disdain in the eyes of the leading knight. Soon, the knights had charged in front of him. A flash of light, and he hastily raised his sword to block. "Clang!" Aided by the momentum of the warhorse, the force of the blow was immense. Bailey was knocked far away, his sword flying out of his hand. Before he could react further, he was knocked away by the warhorses behind him. The last thing he saw was his subordinates being cut down like vegetables by the knights. A head full of terror flew past him, and then everything went black, and he knew nothing more.

Seeing that the cavalry had entered the field, Liu Yuan said to Bick, "The victory is decided. End the battle quickly."

Bick saluted, "Yes, sir!" Then he went to the chariot, took the drumsticks, and struck the drums heavily. The intense drumming replaced the previous rhythmic beat.

The heavy infantry below suddenly changed formation. The previously tight shield wall immediately split open, and the rear-row soldiers charged with spears in both hands! After a wave of thrusts, they retracted their spears and stepped aside. Behind them, the second wave of soldiers charged out with spears in both hands, followed by the third wave. The three consecutive waves of thrusts not only killed a large number of enemies but also completely shattered the enemy's morale. Some had already begun to push backward, and their actions spurred a large number of people to flee.

The heavy infantry abandoned their spears and tower shields, drawing their goose-quill sabers, short swords, war hammers, throwing axes, armor-piercing cones, javelins, and other close-combat weapons to join the melee.

The battle did not last long. The Magner men, with their inferior equipment, lost their courage, and their fighting spirit was no better than the bandits they had encountered before. A large number of them chose to kneel and surrender. The leaders, including Torin, were all quite brave and fought to the death. (Mainly because Ryder and El were watching them closely, and Torin had no chance to surrender.) Anyway, Grig reported this to Liu Yuan. Of the nearly 3,800 Magner clan members who participated in the battle, less than half were still alive. If he hadn't stopped them in time, the number of prisoners would have been even lower.

Liu Yuan's heavy infantry re-entered the field to clean up the battlefield. The prisoners were all tied up and strung together, digging large pits in the woods. The clan warriors supervised them, and they were very good at this kind of work. As for kicking them a few times in private to vent their anger, that was a minor matter.

Stodder's Horn is the peninsula that extends to the very tip of the Shivering Sea. Various types of fish are visible in the sea, and large numbers of seals and walruses gather here, hence the name Seal Bay.
