#117 - Chapter 4: Savage Powers
"Clang!" Liu Yuan tapped her head lightly: "Don't play these little tricks. We are rich. No need to use them to show a sense of superiority, it's demeaning!"
Nina: "Yes, Master, I was wrong! I'll go arrange it right away."
After a while, the guards brought food to the Night's Watch. Liu Yuan came to the knights and said to them, "My lords, we will continue to explore north. Farewell!"
After parting ways with the Night's Watch, Liu Yuan's exploration team changed direction. Hagen, the old guy, had been messing around outside the Great Wall for half his life and was extremely familiar with the distribution of various tribes. Except for the cannibals on the Great Ice River, he had contact with almost everyone.
In fact, wildlings are just a derogatory term used by the people of the Seven Kingdoms for them. These people call themselves free folk to distinguish themselves from the "kneeling people" south of the Wall who bow to lords and kings. They are distributed throughout the lands beyond the Wall, and even in the perpetually frozen Land of Always Winter. The wildlings form different cultural tribes, clans, villages, and raiding parties (some wildling raiding groups are family-based). Some wildlings have a certain degree of civilization, while others are barbaric and hostile.
The main large tribes are the Thenns, the Nightrunners, the Hornfoots, the Cave People, the Frozen Shore men, and the tribes of the Great Ice River.
The Frozen Shore men are a collective term for the free folk culture living on the Frozen Shore west of the Frostfangs. They live by fishing along the northern coast of the Bay of Ice, and their living habits are similar to those of the Eskimos. They are mainly divided into two factions, one of which wears antlers or other animal tusks on their hats. They use walrus bone chariots pulled by dogs as big as direwolves as transportation. They also raise reindeer, and women mostly use walrus skin to make clothes, so they are also called Walrus People.
The other faction often crosses the Bay of Ice and enters the North to plunder Bear Island and the coastal areas. However, the relationship between the two sides has almost reached the point of irreconcilable hostility.
The tribes of the Great Ice River are free folk tribes living near the Great Ice River beyond the Wall. The living environment there is harsh, food is very precious, and the people who live there are raiders among raiders. It is said that they enjoy human flesh, and they do not even let go of corpses. They are called cannibals.
The Cave People are a mountain clan of free folk who live in caves in the Frostfangs. Their numbers are not large, and they rarely have contact with other tribes. The Cave People dye their faces blue, purple, and green. Due to their eating habits, their teeth are as ugly as rasps.
The Thenns live in the Thenn Valley in the far north mountains of the Frostfangs. The Thenns are descendants of the First Men. They speak the Old Tongue, and most of them have mastered some common language vocabulary. The Thenns are fierce fighters, but because of their god-like belief in Magnar, their absolute obedience to Magnar makes them more disciplined than other free folk. Because they have their own laws and lords, they have a relatively complete mastery of the First Men's advanced bronze smelting technology.
The Thenns are far better equipped than other free folk, with bronze helmets, bronze or bronze axes, leaf-shaped short spears, clothes sewn with bronze armor plates, and simple leather shields with copper edges. It is said that the Thenns are also the tribe that deals with giants the most, and most of the giants live around the Thenn Valley.
The Hornfoots are a mountain clan alliance of free folk. People south of the Wall hardly know of their existence. They are short in stature, and because they walk barefoot on the ice and snow, their soles are as hard as leather boiled in boiling water. Their warriors wear furs and wield obsidian spears. They have always lived in the far north of the Frostfangs, neighboring the Thenns. For some reason, the Hornfoots and the Nightrunners have been at war constantly.
The Nightrunners are the largest tribal alliance among the free folk beyond the Wall. They live in the vast area of the Frostfangs and the Haunted Forest, covering the entire Haunted Forest. The Nightrunners fight with almost all the wildling tribes, and they don't even let their own people go. Most of the wildlings who raid south all year round come from the Nightrunners.
In the past few decades, with the Night's Watch becoming increasingly weaker, the free folk have become bolder and bolder. Some wildlings have tried to plunder the heart of the North, even the territory of Bear Island, instead of attacking the villages of Brandon's Gift as they used to.
Raiding across the Wall is an important part of wildling culture. Wildlings can join the raiders as early as twelve years old. They don't cross the Wall to plunder for fish or apples. They plunder longswords and axes, spices, silks and furs, seize every coin, every ring, and every jeweled cup they can find, steal wine in the summer, meat in the winter, and women in any season, and take them across the Wall. Just the year before last, the daughter of the Amber family, Morse Amber's only daughter, was also taken away.
With Hagen leading the way, Liu Yuan's expedition didn't have to detour. They came to a small lake in the forest, with a winding river passing through. According to Hagen, this is the Milkwater, which flows directly into the Shivering Sea to the east. Some scattered small tribes mostly live on both sides of the Milkwater.
Walking through the Haunted Forest, you suddenly see a towering mountain. That is the Fist of the First Men, the ringfort built by the First Men that can be traced back to the Dawn Age. The steep and rocky summit is surrounded by a circle of chest-high low walls made of gray stone.
Winter beyond the Wall is unusually cold, and even the mountain wildlings will not spend the winter on the mountain. Liu Yuan is now stationed at the Fist of the First Men. The west and north sides of the mountain are steep slopes, and the east side is only slightly gentler. The summit has a very good view. From here, you can clearly overlook the Haunted Forest, and even the Wall in the south is faintly visible. Turning your gaze to the north, there is a continuous mountain range, and the highest snow peak is the Frostfangs. The branch extending northeast from there is the Thenns' home, and the branch extending northwest leads directly to the Land of Always Winter.
Liu Yuan's goal is to go west from the Fist of the First Men, and not far after crossing the mountains, there will be a giant tribe of more than fifty people. It is close to the Great Canyon and the glacier, near the territory of the Walrus People. This was discovered by Hagen a few years ago. These giants also raise some mammoths. Their relationship with their neighbors is pretty average, mainly because the giants are so powerful that no one dares to provoke them, and the giants will not attack the wildlings for no reason. Moreover, the giants are of low intelligence, and the wisdom of a general adult giant is only equivalent to that of an eight or nine-year-old human child.
Hagen came to Liu Yuan timidly and hesitated: "Lord, you're looking for me?"
Liu Yuan looked up and saw it was him and said: "Hagen, you came just in time. Come and try, see if you can establish a partnership with this guy." Saying that, he threw the guy he was holding forward, and it was actually an adult snow bear.
