#124 - Chapter 11 The Power of Money
Visenya's Hill is one of the three hills overlooking King's Landing. The Great Sept of Baelor, also known as Baelor's Sept, is the center of the Faith of the Seven and the seat of the High Septon. Named after the Septon-King Baelor the Blessed, who oversaw its construction, it replaced the Starry Sept of Oldtown as the center of the Faith of the Seven in Westeros.
The Sept itself is a magnificent marble-domed structure with seven crystal towers rising from it, the roofs all inlaid with green glass. The bells in the towers only ring together on major occasions, such as the death of a king.
Surrounding it is a white marble plaza, in the center of which stands a huge statue of Baelor I. He stands calmly on the pedestal, his face full of compassion. There is also a garden that can accommodate hundreds of monks. Outside the Sept, there is a marble pulpit to attract more people when the monks preach. There are many doors in the Sept. The monks enter the Sept from the Father's Gate, the nuns from the Mother's Gate, and the Silent Sisters from the Stranger's Gate.
Today, hundreds of Royal Guards stand indifferently on the white marble plaza. Entering the interior of the Sept from the gate requires walking through a long corridor. This corridor is called the 'Hall of Lamps.' Many colored stained-glass balls hang from the ceiling of the corridor.
Passing through two doors leads to the place where the monks pray, where the tall altars of the Seven Gods gather under the dome of glass, gold, and crystal. The floor of the Sept is made of marble, and the huge windows in the walls are fitted with colored stained glass. In front of the altar, believers light candles to worship. Different ceremonies will be held in front of different altars. For example, during weddings, the newlyweds will make their vows between the tall gilded statues of the Father and the Mother. Outside a conference hall, four Kingsguard stand guard, and several ornately dressed people sit inside the lavishly decorated conference hall.
A long argument made King Robert Baratheon impatient. But for the sake of 'Good Father' Jon Arryn, he sat patiently.
Across the long table was the current High Septon, the highest leader of the church, wearing a tall crystal crown.
Usually, the High Septon is elected by the archseptons. The monks of the church must renounce their family names, and the newly appointed High Septon must renounce his secular name. This is because it is believed that the person holding the position of High Septon is no longer a person, but a spokesperson for the gods in heaven. However, this custom makes it difficult to distinguish the past High Septons. People can only mention a High Septon with some descriptions, such as 'that stonemason bishop' or 'that fat bishop' or 'the bishop before the fat one.' The one in front of him is the 'fat bishop.' He is a very fat person and has been the High Septon for many years. Accompanying him were four red-robed archseptons. Besides Prime Minister Jon, Adrian and Captain Barristan of the Kingsguard were beside Robert, with Becket and a young man standing behind as attendants.
What opened their eyes was that these high-ranking adults were actually bargaining so calculatingly. The eloquence of those archseptons was truly remarkable. No matter what they said, they could always lead it to the grace of the gods. Prime Minister Jon and Count Adrian did not budge, making promises and threats.
Finally, King Robert couldn't bear it anymore and slammed his hand on the table: 'High Septon, your church is too greedy. I'm only wasting time with you for the sake of the Prime Minister. It's not like only the church can help the royal family.'
The archsepton was about to speak, but was stopped by High Septon Lan reaching out. He respectfully said: 'God loves the world. When the people suffer, we servants of God should naturally have compassion. His Majesty is working hard for the country, so let's follow what Prime Minister said earlier and finalize the agreement.'
Robert gave him a look that said, 'You're smart to know what's good for you,' picked up a pen, and signed his name below the blank agreement. Barristan handed over the king's seal. Robert picked up the seal, dipped it in sealing wax, and pressed it on. Then he got up and left a sentence: 'The rest is up to you.' Without looking back, he left the meeting hall, and Barristan saluted and followed him out.
Prime Minister Jon said helplessly: 'I'm sorry, Your Holiness the High Septon. His Majesty he…'
The High Septon said with a smile: 'It doesn't matter. There are many things to do when a dynasty is first established. We shouldn't have wasted His Majesty's time.'
The agreement was quickly drafted, and after both parties circulated it. Jon Arryn and the four prime ministers signed their names. Finally, it was sent to the High Septon. He pressed a fingerprint and stamped his seal. The two copies of the agreement officially came into effect.
The High Septon said: 'As for the one million gold dragons, please rest assured, Prime Minister. I will arrange for someone to count them immediately, and the money will be sent to the Red Keep soon.'
Jon Arryn: 'Please rest assured, Your Holiness. The document signed by the King will be delivered soon. As for the church's loan, it will be the responsibility of the Minister of Finance, Earl Setegar. Then we'll take our leave!'
After the royal family left, the four archseptons gathered around. Someone asked: 'Your Holiness, why did you agree to them so easily? We could have asked for more.'
The High Septon smiled, picked up the agreement, and flicked it: 'We don't need to force the royal family too much. After all, we are in a weaker position. We can only constantly test their bottom line to gain more rights for the church. Obtaining more freedom to preach is the first step. You always think I'm greedy, scraping the offerings of believers. Isn't the accumulated wealth now useful? In fact, I hope the royal family can borrow more money. When they can't pay it back, we can make more demands. Hahaha…'
'Your Holiness, you are wise!' The archseptons praised admiringly. Could the 'fat bishop,' who looks fat and stupid, be a simple person if he could break through the siege of dozens of archseptons and become the High Septon?
On the white marble plaza, Prime Minister Jon sighed helplessly as he looked at the Great Sept, and then got into his carriage.
Earl Adrian showed a disdainful sneer: 'A bunch of greedy guys, they still think it's the old days. You two remember, it's the power of wealth. Even the king and prime minister have to bow their heads!'
'Wealth and power are not everything, life is. Some people want to climb up but fail, and never have a chance to try again. Failure destroys their will and takes their lives. Some people have the opportunity to climb, but they refuse. They hold on to their vows, to the gods, to the unrealistic fantasies of love. Only the ladder is real, and hard climbing is everything. If you want to become great men who control your destiny, you must seize every opportunity to rise,' Earl Adrian said lightly, staring at the two young men.
