#16 - Chapter 16: Dinner, the beginning of everything (Part 2)
Liu Yuan yawned widely; he wasn't a real child. He understood these principles. Right now, he was too weak, and playing the obedient grandson was a necessary step.
The entire banquet hall was divided into sections by long tables. Westeros had a very strict hierarchical system, and only the most powerful lords with the highest status would sit at the front.
As for those noble ladies who had not yet married, they sat with their relatives. They sized up the handsome noble sons with curious or shy gazes. In fact, events like the tournament often served as matchmaking opportunities between families.
Liu Yuan and the other children carried trays and wine jugs, weaving between these long tables. He also understood why children were used; anyone with a wider frame wouldn't be able to squeeze through.
A Kingsguard knight shouted, "His Grace, the King!"
The entire hall immediately fell silent, and people stared ahead. Soon, Aerys II emerged from the shadows, guarded by two Kingsguard knights. When his figure appeared, many noble ladies paled in shock. But they all tightly covered their mouths, afraid to make a sound.
In fact, many nobles had not seen their king for a long time. Liu Yuan, standing to the side, clicked his tongue in amazement. Aerys II's current appearance was hard to describe. His pale hair was scattered loosely over his shoulders, his figure was thin, and large patches of festering sores covered his exposed skin. Most striking were his hands, with long, curved fingernails like those of a ghoul.
Anyway, Liu Yuan couldn't understand how a king could end up in such a state. It seemed the titles "Mad King" and "King Scab" were well-deserved; whoever came up with those nicknames was quite skilled.
Aerys II didn't seem to mind his appearance as king, waving his claw-like right hand to signal everyone to continue, while he silently sat at the highest point, coldly watching the crowd below. The sound in the banquet hall seemed to drop several degrees compared to before, and the previous noise was gone.
However, the silver-haired prince, who had always attended the king, walked down to chat with the lords. His demeanor was elegant and graceful, which to some extent alleviated the awkwardness brought about by the king's appearance.
The tables Liu Yuan served were relatively close to the front, belonging to the king's close ministers and their relatives. He poured a glass of wine for a Kingsguard knight, feeling an immense aura emanating from him. This man was Ser Arthur Dayne, known as the Sword of the Morning, a legendary knight. His title came from the greatsword "Dawn" he carried on his back; Kingsguard knights had the right to carry weapons at all times.
Compared to the greatsword "Dawn" forged from meteorite iron, Liu Yuan was more interested in the beauty beside him. She was tall, with dark hair, fair skin, and unforgettable purple eyes. She closely resembled his favorite actress, Sophie Marceau, and was the focus of attention for the men in the room.
Liu Yuan noticed that the three Stark sons were constantly staring at her. The Stark family's side was lively, with many young people surrounding them. Judging from the sigils on their clothes—a moose, a black bear, and a mermaid—they were likely the sons of vassals from the North.
After the banquet had been going on for some time, King Aerys, whose energy was not what it used to be, left early. The atmosphere of the banquet had gradually entered its peak, and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, a renowned harpist, sang a beautiful lament, his voice poignant and melodious.
Lyanna seemed to be touched by it, and she was quietly sobbing. Unfortunately, her younger brother Benjen noticed and mocked, "Hahaha, my sister is crying. Ned, Brandon, come and look!"
His actions provoked Lyanna's embarrassment and anger, and she retaliated by slamming her wine cup on his head. "Shut up, you little brat. Dare to say another word, and I'll beat you!"
The crowd erupted in laughter, and not far from them, Robert Baratheon stared at Lyanna with infatuation. His companions teased him with a few words, causing him to lock his arm around his companion's neck and pour wine down him.
Next, a Night's Watch recruiting officer stepped onto the stage, speaking with a cadence, "Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I am the sword in the darkness, the watcher on the walls, the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come..." He recited the Night's Watch oath, calling on knights to join the Night's Watch.
The banquet gradually reached its climax, and the musicians began to play music. Prince Rhaegar took Lilian Hoan's hand and walked to the center of the floor, dancing gracefully with the music to start things off as the most honored guest and host. After one dance, it was time for everyone to dance.
Many men's eyes turned over, and they all planned to invite the beautiful Ashara Dayne to dance.
Ashara Dayne, from a Dornish noble family, was attending as a companion to Princess Elia Martell, but her beauty attracted the attention of most unmarried men.
At the start of the dance, she first danced with her brother Arthur Dayne.
As soon as the song ended, Oberyn Martell shamelessly approached, and Ashara politely agreed to dance with him.
During the third dance, everyone was eager to move, but Jon Connington, Prince Rhaegar's squire, preemptively intercepted her, and Ashara reluctantly agreed to dance with him. Many people glared at him with jealousy. Liu Yuan saw that several people from the North were eager to try.
Eddard was too shy to go up, no matter what he said. In the end, it was his older brother Brandon who pushed aside the people in front of him and invited Ashara to dance on behalf of his brother.
Ashara Dayne generously agreed, and the two danced gracefully on the dance floor. This kind of ballroom dancing was a compulsory course for noble children. I don't know what they said, but Ashara seemed very happy, giggling.
Behind Liu Yuan, Lyanna and a short young man were whispering, "Holand, look at those three over there. Aren't they the squires who bullied you?"
Holand said, "Yes, Lady Lyanna, it's them..."
Lyanna: "We absolutely can't let them off easily. One serves a knight from House Hightower, another from the Twins serves House Frey, and which family does the one with the porcupine serve?"
Holand hesitated and said, "He's from House Brownhill, Lady Lyanna. I think we should just forget about it! Actually, I..."
Lyanna waved her hand to interrupt him: "It's not just about you anymore; it's a provocation against the northern nobles and our House Stark."
