#3 - Chapter 3 Humble
Women would also hold him, speaking to him in another language. Liu Yuan understood that this was likely his native tongue. Although he couldn't understand, he tried his best to remember what she said. Then he would fall asleep in her arms. This feeling of helplessness frustrated Liu Yuan greatly!
After about a month, the woman's body grew even weaker. She even struggled to get out of bed. Fortunately, a middle-aged woman named Buma would take time out of her day to care for her.
One evening, the woman suddenly seemed much more energetic. She picked up Liu Yuan and walked out of the castle, feeling the coolness of early autumn outside. With her back to the setting sun, gazing into the distance, she sang a melodious song. It was a folk song from his hometown, and at that moment, the woman revealed a long-lost smile.
Liu Yuan looked at her flushed face and sighed silently. He knew that this abnormal burst of energy was what the Chinese would call a '迴光返照' (huí guāng fǎn zhào), a final glow before death.
Sure enough, after returning to the room, after feeding Liu Yuan one last time, the poor woman slowly closed her eyes and fell asleep forever.
Liu Yuan could only silently remember her name: Vina.
In the evening, Aunt Buma came again. When she entered the dark room, she discovered Vina lying on the bed, already lifeless. She sighed, "Alas, poor girl, and you, poor little one." Then she picked up Liu Yuan and went to find the head female servant. Soon, several male servants arrived and carried away Vina's cold body.
Liu Yuan lay in Buma's arms, watching these people busily moving around. Under the direction of a bald man, they built a platform outside the castle with firewood and charcoal. Vina was laid on top, still wearing her thin and worn brown dress.
An old man with white hair and beard muttered incantations. He didn't understand many of the words, but they were probably prayers for the deceased. Then, several people threw torches onto Vina's body, and immediately, a raging fire ignited. Fueled by the sea breeze, the flames were very strong, and the fire quickly consumed Vina's body. People stood silently for a while, then returned to the castle.
The castle was to be closed for the night, but because Vina had given birth to a bastard son for the Earl, they made a special exception to hold a simple funeral for her. Many of the servants in the castle attended, perhaps hoping that others would come to mourn them after their death. But they had to go back to rest quickly and then throw themselves into the busy work of tomorrow.
Liu Yuan was held in Buma's arms the entire time, and he silently watched everything. After the crowd dispersed, Buma went to the bald man, who seemed to be the castle's steward, and appeared to have considerable authority. The two seemed to have a good relationship, and they exchanged words: The general meaning was that Vina was dead, and the child would be handed over to Buma to take care of. After all, he was the lord's bloodline, and a 'dragon seed' at that. Who knew if the Earl would pay attention to him.
Buma also made a request to the steward: "This child is like a little dragon, with a huge appetite. The amount the kitchen arranged before is not enough at all." She could say that she was raising a child for the lord, explaining Liu Yuan's situation to the steward, and also securing more supplies for herself.
Balin nodded in agreement: "Okay, I understand. I will tell Leia that you can take whatever the child needs from the kitchen. And I'll give you a raise of 3 copper mechs per month, okay! Raise it to 5 copper mechs." Liu Yuan's eyes widened. Buma actually grabbed the man's hand and stuffed it into her full chest. The bald man immediately compromised. These two must be having an affair.
Buma carried Liu Yuan back to Vina's old room. There, she packed up some usable things, including a few cheap pieces of jewelry and Vina's meager savings. In Liu Yuan's view, this was understandable. She was taking care of your child, so taking a little something was normal, right? In this feudal society, everyone lived in humility.
Then, she carried Liu Yuan back to her own room. As a senior maid, Buma's room was on the second floor, and the living environment was obviously better than Vina's. With the candle lit, Buma took off her clothes and began to wash herself. Liu Yuan found that her muscles and skin were still very firm. It turned out that Buma was younger than he thought, perhaps only in her thirties. It was just that the skin on her face was not very good due to living by the sea all year round, which made her look a little old. With a little makeup, she would also be very beautiful. No wonder the bald man was so enthusiastic about her. Buma reached out and untied Liu Yuan's package, finding it very clean, without the imagined excrement and urine. She happily picked up Liu Yuan and kissed him. She gestured a few times and began to make baby clothes for Liu Yuan out of Vina's old clothes. Liu Yuan just watched for a while, then felt extremely sleepy, yawned, and fell asleep.
From that day on, Liu Yuan lived with Buma. Although he no longer had a mother, he still had milk to drink. It was from the few goats raised in the castle. The goat milk was freshly squeezed, and it was brought to him after being heated slightly. It was definitely all-natural, with a few goat hairs floating on top! Although he complained about the sanitary conditions, he had to drink it in order to grow up quickly. Apart from the strong goaty smell, everything else was fine. Back on Blue Star, he had lived in pastoral areas since he was a child and had always eaten cow and goat dairy products. While drinking goat milk, he was still thinking about how to make it taste better.
Buma was a maid who cooked in the kitchen and was also specifically responsible for making soup. Her work was relatively easy (who told her she had someone above her). When she worked, she used a cloth belt to tie Liu Yuan to her back. This was very common in this era. Another benefit was that she always had to taste the soup when cooking, and Buma would always feed him a few spoonfuls with a wooden spoon. Before long, Liu Yuan was full.
When she wasn't working, Buma would carry Liu Yuan around the castle. In fact, 'Red Crab' Castle was less than a kilometer from the sea. The fortress didn't look very big overall, about a hundred meters long and wide, and seven stories high, about twenty-three meters. The whole body was built of stone and blue bricks. The castle had three layers of walls, and the interior was composed of multiple towers, which were cleverly connected into a whole by passages. This made the bottom of the castle very spacious, which could be used for servants to live and move around, and to raise some livestock. When necessary, it could gather troops. Even if hundreds of cavalry gathered here, it would not seem crowded. It can be seen that the architectural level of this world, at least the technology of building castles, is still very advanced.
