#47 - Chapter 10 The Turning Point of the War (I)

Liu Yuan can now apply to the Chief Steward's office to obtain some Valyrian metal for research. His life is very fulfilling, and he plans his time reasonably. In the morning, Liu Yuan goes to the studio to research and develop existing subjects; in the afternoon, he takes some time to practice his martial arts and physical fitness. As for the rest of the time, he mostly uses it to learn new knowledge. He is now a celebrity in the Citadel, and many Maesters believe he will be a Grand Maester in the future.

Months passed, and the war in the North continued. After the Battle of Ashford, Robert retreated, and the new Hand of the King, Jon Connington, led his army to join the Southern forces. Learning that Robert was escaping to the Riverlands, Hand Connington led his army north in pursuit. Lord Tyrell led the Southern army to the Stormlands to attack Storm's End, which had few defenders, mainly to plunder the Stormlands and make up for his losses. As for Randyll Tarly, such a capable general, he was kept by his side in case of emergency.

Lord Mace Tyrell commanded the Reach's army and soon advanced to the walls of Storm's End, immediately setting up a blockade. Storm's End is one of the most fortified castles in the Seven Kingdoms, never having been taken or destroyed by storms in its long history. The castle is surrounded by thick outer walls, about 100 feet high and 40 feet thick at their thickest, and about 80 feet thick on the seaward side. The walls consist of two layers of rock with a layer of sand and gravel in between. The wall surface is smoothly curved, and the stones are so tightly packed that not even a wisp of wind can penetrate. The seaward walls are 150 feet above sea level.

The castle itself is a massive tower, topped with sturdy battlements, making it look like a giant fist piercing the sky from a distance. The tower is so huge that the granaries, barracks, armories, halls, and lord's chambers inside are more than sufficient. The castle is said to be protected by spells woven into the walls to prevent magic from passing through them, with Brandon the Builder and the Children of the Forest involved in its construction.

The commander defending Storm's End was Robert's second younger brother, Stannis Baratheon, who was only 18 years old. Facing the dark mass of the Southern army under the city and the meager garrison under his command, the resolute Stannis was not intimidated by the grim situation. He methodically arranged the defense of the city. The two sides had been facing each other for two months, and Lord Tyrell had launched three large-scale sieges. The location of Storm's End was too dangerous. Each time, no more than a thousand troops could be投入 into the siege, and many siege engines could not be used. In the end, he had no choice but to withdraw, leaving Randyll Tarly and part of the army behind. Then, the remaining army was dispersed to occupy other villages and towns in the Stormlands.

Lord Tyrell, for the purpose of subsidizing the cost of this military expedition, strictly ordered all the knights and nobles leading the teams to ensure military discipline. The Reach is the most deeply influenced by the Faith of the Seven, and its knightly culture is also the most profound. With the restraint of the officers, there was not much killing in the occupied territories, but a more gentle way of exploitation was adopted. For the common people of the Stormlands, they simply had a new lord temporarily. The taxes were slightly higher, but life could still go on.

Soon, Stannis received a report from his subordinates. He hurried to the high tower and saw the overwhelming fleet in the distance. The thing he was most worried about had happened. The Redwyne fleet from the Arbor had arrived, and nearly a thousand warships of all sizes had completely surrounded Shipbreaker Bay, cutting off Storm's End's sea supply line. Stannis understood that the most difficult days were coming.

A small boat slowly docked on the outskirts of the pier. Seven or eight people in gray robes stepped off the boat. They were assistant Maesters and apprentices from the Citadel. Liu Yuan was among them, and the others were his assistants.

Perhaps humans in this world develop quickly. Before the age of eight, his body had already grown to be more than 1.4 meters tall. Now, the security in Oldtown is very good, and there are no thieves, so his hunting activities had to stop. Now he uses the remaining time to improve himself. His only pastime is to take his assistants to the tavern every now and then to listen to those keyboard warriors discuss the situation on the continent, and to chat with sailors from overseas to learn about exotic customs.

Today, his research has made a major breakthrough, and he can now purify smelted Valyrian steel. The biggest difficulty in reshaping Valyrian steel is that the internal structure of the Valyrian metal is destroyed after smelting, making it very fragile. Moreover, the quality of Valyrian metal used in civilian products is very poor and cannot be used as raw materials for weapons. Today, he can purify these impurities. Now that he has found the right method, the next step is to improve the process.

In a good mood, Liu Yuan brought several assistants who worked for him to the tavern to spend money. Anyway, he hadn't listened to those sailors bragging for a while. The "Half-Whale" tavern near the port is considered to have the best overall environment. The hall is spacious and has a stage, where singers and dancers often perform.

The maids cleaned the tavern very cleanly. In the words of Liu Yuan, the food here is barely passable, and he doesn't expect to find a Michelin chef.

Today, as soon as they entered, they found that the atmosphere was not right. The usual performances were gone, and people were gathered in groups of three or five to discuss something. Liu Yuan found a table that was pieced together. Jack, the owner of the tavern, came over with a smile on his face and said, "It's Master Galon, you're here. It seems you're in a good mood. You must have made another major discovery. What would you like today?"

Liu Yuan said with a smile: "Not bad! Bring up the best wine and food as before. Boss Jack, what happened today? Why are these people gathered over there?"

Jack subconsciously looked around, and then said mysteriously: "The city hall has already issued an order about this matter. It's not good for everyone to talk about it loudly. It's about the war in the North. The rebel army defeated the Royal army in Stonehedge, Hand Jon Connington was injured and fled, and the Greyjoy family from the Iron Islands sent people to Riverrun."

It turned out that after the defeat at Ashford, Robert Baratheon led the remaining army north. He decided to join forces with the allied Stark, Tully, and Arryn armies first.

As a result, they were closely pursued by the Royal army. The Storm army had not yet recovered from the previous defeat. The two sides fought several times, each with its own victories and defeats. Although Jon Connington was young, he was very good at commanding the army, and Robert could not find any flaws to attack.
