#57 - Chapter 20: The Path of the Lord (I)

The Old Gods have no preaching priests, no devout prayers, no hymns of praise, and not even worship rituals. It is a spontaneously passed down religion among the common people. The closest thing known to a ritual is praying to the heart tree in the Godswood. Whether it's the birth of a newborn, a funeral for the deceased, or a wedding, they will be held in the Godswood if conditions allow.

Ed, with a somewhat serious face and a warm smile, said loudly, "Who has come to worship the Old Gods tonight?"

Meekah Seven also responded loudly, "It is Joryel Seven of House Seven who has come here to be married. She has grown up and matured. She is my direct daughter, of pure family blood. She comes here to pray for the blessings of the gods. Who is here to marry her?"

At Ed's signal, Becquet stepped forward and said loudly, "Becquet of House Settigar, Earl of Crabs Isle and heir to House Settigar, has come to marry my bride."

Ed said with a smile, "Miss Joryel Seven, are you willing to accept this man before you?"

Meekah Seven released her daughter's hand and gently clapped twice to encourage her. Joryel Seven took two steps forward, gazed at Becquet, and said softly, "I, Joryel of House Seven, am willing to become the wife of Becquet Settigar, to bear him children, to fulfill the duties and obligations of a wife, to be with him in life and death, never to leave or forsake him!"

Ed Stark said loudly, "I, Duke of Winterfell, hereby declare that you are legally married in the witness of the gods. Let everyone cheer!" A burst of warm applause and cheers erupted from the crowd. Seeing Becquet was somewhat stunned, until Ed pushed him, he reacted. He stepped forward, took Joryel's hand, and the two walked towards the city amidst the cheers of the crowd. Soldiers stood guard every few steps along the road, holding torches, and behind them were the people who came to participate in the celebration. People offered their blessings to the newlyweds.

Thanks to the supplies brought by House Settigar, Seven City would distribute a certain amount of food to the people. The men also received a mug of ale, and everyone praised Earl Seven's kindness and generosity.

As for the nobles, they followed the newlyweds back to the castle. Young men and women surrounded the newlyweds, and next was the popular bridal chamber hazing. Bridal chamber hazing is also a custom in Westeros, which takes place after the wedding and wedding banquet. People would carry the groom and bride all the way to the bed to help them consummate their marriage. Since they were all nobles, they paid attention to some decorum. The men carrying the bride did not tear her clothes, at most telling her some rude, lewd jokes; the women were not polite, playfully stripping Becquet down to his shorts, letting him experience the robustness of the northern girls. People threw the two half-naked newlyweds onto the bed, and then left the room contentedly, leaving the two alone. Some people originally planned to stay outside the bridal chamber, shouting some advice about the wedding night through the door, but they were driven away by the girls! Only the parties involved know the joy of the wedding night best. From Becquet's smug look the next day, it could be seen that the married life was harmonious.

But the happy time passed quickly. Three days later, Earl Seven led the conscripted soldiers and joined Ed's expeditionary army.

Since House Settigar also responded to the king's call, Becquet also led more than a hundred family soldiers to act with his father-in-law. Joryel was already considered a member of House Settigar, so she also went south with the army. She would transfer back to Crabs Isle in the Riverlands.

In Oldtown, Liu Yuan received the news that Becquet's wedding was indeed postponed due to the war. Earl Adrian, as a Crownlands noble, led the family's elite to respond to King Robert's call and join the expeditionary army.

Sitting at his desk in silence for a long time, Liu Yuan threw the note in his hand into the fire pit next to him, and he made a decision. He came to a room and reached out and knocked on the door "Knock, knock, knock~".

"Come in!" A deep voice sounded, and Liu Yuan pushed the door open. In the room, a short, fat figure was his mentor, Maester Marwyn. Maester Marwyn returned to Westeros after the Usurper's War, and when he came back, he was already wearing the Valyrian ring, mask, and staff symbolizing a maester. Liu Yuan had played with the real thing, and to be honest, the workmanship was really rough.

Marwyn looked up and saw that it was Liu Yuan, so he put down the thick book in his hand and said, "It's Garon! Why are you looking for me so late?"

Liu Yuan said, "I'm sorry! Maester Marwyn, I'm sorry to bother you so late. Actually, I have something important that I want to discuss with you."

Marwyn said with interest, "Oh! What's so important? Don't tell me you're planning to become a formal maester? Actually, you should have been promoted long ago with your ability. There's no one in the Citadel as erudite as you, Seven Gods, a full twenty-seven links!"

Liu Yuan shook his head and said apologetically, "I'm very sorry, I don't plan to become a maester. On the contrary, I'm going to quit the Citadel and become a lord."

Marwyn was a little angry when he first heard it, but he quickly calmed down. In fact, many students from noble backgrounds have already arranged their future plans. After they learn the necessary knowledge in the Citadel, they return to their families to become landed knights. For example, the famous 'Red Viper' Oberyn Martell once studied at the Citadel, during which he also forged six links, but later dropped out due to boredom. He was not surprised that Liu Yuan made this choice. Maester and lord, unless they are idiots, they know how to choose.

Marwyn said with some regret, "Have you decided? Seriously, it's a pity to give up like this. If you continue, you will definitely become a great maester who will be remembered in history."

Liu Yuan put an envelope on the table and pushed it over. He explained, "Sorry, Maester Marwyn. The purpose of my coming to the Citadel is to learn knowledge. I have learned all the subjects I am interested in here in eight years, and now it is time to leave. This is my application for withdrawal, and I will have to trouble you to submit it for me."

Marwyn sighed helplessly, "Okay! Since you have decided. I will send this application to the steward's office first thing tomorrow morning, Garon, are you really not going to consider it again?... Forget it, you have never changed your decisions."

After saying goodbye to Maester Marwyn, Liu Yuan went to his workshop and laboratory. He took back all the items that belonged to him into the space. Some things in the Westeros continent already belong to black technology, so of course they cannot be left to the Citadel. What he took away was not only the improved equipment, but also the learning materials from these years.

In fact, Liu Yuan had already discovered that the Citadel had been infiltrated quite deeply by House Hightower. The research results of the Citadel will almost always benefit House Hightower first. For example, Liu Yuan's stainless steel technology, as soon as the research was successful, House Hightower came to the door. If Liu Yuan didn't have a noble background and was willing to share the technology, who knows what would happen? Since that incident, Liu Yuan realized the danger and strengthened the confidentiality, just like the remolding technology of Valyrian steel, those odd-job workers simply couldn't see the problem.
