#97 - Chapter 21 Cursed Land
The banks of the Lorne River were once the homeland of the Rhoynar, who had established an incredibly glorious civilization. They also competed with the Andals for thousands of years, but it is said that both sides learned the method of iron smelting during the war.
About nine hundred years ago, the Valyrian Freehold in the southeast began to expand. They established many colonies on both sides of the Lorne River. Volantis, Chroyane, Carosa, Volon Therys, Ghoyan Drohe, Valysar, and Selhorys were all established during that period, which seriously threatened the survival of the Rhoynar. Legend has it that the Rhoynar mastered water magic and were not afraid of the Valyrians' dragons at all. The two sides broke out into a war that lasted nearly three hundred years.
Legend has it that the Rhoynar summoned monstrous waves, destroying all the Valyrian colonies. In the last war, Prince Garin led 250,000 Rhoynar in a desperate battle. Although they used water magic, they were still no match for the Valyrians' three hundred dragons, and the entire army was wiped out. A queen named Nymeria led most of the defeated Rhoynar across the Narrow Sea to Westeros. According to mythology, they eventually settled in Dorne and merged with the locals, forming the Dornish people we know today.
After the great Rhoynar exodus, the Valyrians destroyed the Rhoynar capital, Chroyane, and many other large cities, including Ny Sar, Ar Noy, and Ghoyan Drohe. Even today, these ruins can still be clearly seen from the Lorne River. After the Rhoynar fled, river pirates are now rampant on the Lorne River. Many of the bandits are descendants of the Rhoynar, and some are Valyrian slaves who fled after the Doom. It is rumored that the group that founded Braavos was also part of them.
Currently, these relatively independent small towns can be imagined as independent mountain strongholds. The residents inside usually make a living by fishing, and occasionally moonlight as river bandits and highwaymen. Well! Maybe their side job is more frequent.
As for why they were so polite? Hehe~ That morning, the banks of the river were filled with thick fog. Liu Yuan's advance troops were actually surrounded by a large group of people dressed in all kinds of strange clothes. They also said a lot, roughly meaning: I opened this road, I planted this tree, if you want to pass this road, leave money to buy the way.
As a result, before the advance cavalry could take action, these hundred or so bandits were surrounded by the subsequent troops. Liu Yuan took a look and thought these people were quite interesting, daring to rob even the army. With a wave of his hand, he directly surrounded the town in front. In order to obtain the forgiveness of the big boss, they naturally had to offer the town's money and other supplies.
Then they saw the convoy that stretched as far as the eye could see, with as many as tens of thousands of people.
As a result, the towns on the north bank of the Selhorys River were unlucky. With such a large army passing through, not to mention collecting tolls, the town chiefs along the way would offer a generous gift. Liu Yuan did not make things difficult for them. Those who gave gifts were basically given a fair trading opportunity. Liu Yuan could also replenish some supplies along the way, paying for them with real money.
Of course, there were also some who didn't use their brains. There was one town that actually refused the legion to pass through their territory, perhaps because they had something to rely on. They also put on a tough attitude, demanding a high toll. Liu Yuan certainly didn't indulge them. Ballista, anyone? It was a good opportunity to use this small town to let the soldiers practice siege warfare. He mobilized a regular infantry battalion and an auxiliary battalion, three catapults plus ten ballistae. It only took a little over an hour to take down the not-so-high city wall.
All those who dared to resist were killed, and the rest were demoted to slaves. After a search, the harvest was not bad, obtaining about 20,000 gold dragons worth of wealth. Liu Yuan discovered that these people who lived on the water all year round were very good at operating ships. It just so happened that there was a long way to go along the riverbank next. Now that he had excellent ship slaves, he simply made use of all the captured ships, using the waterway to reduce some of the transportation pressure of supplies.
Next, he would trade some ships with the towns along the way and recruit some sailors who had been converted from water bandits. A few days later, he arrived at the place where the Selhorys River flows into the Lorne River. On the opposite side of the great river was the town of Selhorys. It was a town with high walls. Although it was large, it was still considered a town rather than a city, directly under the jurisdiction of Volantis.
Such a large-scale team appearing on the opposite bank immediately aroused Selhorys's vigilance. The huge bronze bell rang to warn the entire city. Even the fishing boats working on the river scattered like startled fish. Even across the river, Liu Yuan could see the Volantis slave guards with tiger stripes on their faces on the opposite city wall. In addition, more than twenty slender galleys sailed out from the other side, carrying soldiers dressed in the same way. These should be the famous Tiger Cloaks!
Because Selhorys is located on the east bank of the Lorne River, it is more vulnerable to attacks from the Dothraki khals than its sister towns. However, the suddenly emerging army did not take any hostile actions, but swaggered to set up camp on the spot, facing Selhorys across the river.
The Archon of Selhorys climbed the city wall and discussed with other officials how to deal with this incident. In the end, it was decided to send someone to contact them first to see what the other party wanted. Before long, a galley slowly approached the opposite bank. The ships separated a passage to allow it to dock.
A nobleman dressed in a gorgeous robe, accompanied by several soldiers with tiger stripes tattooed on their cheeks, came to see the leader. When he saw Liu Yuan's Valyrian appearance, his attitude became even more respectful: "Greetings, Lord. I am Rudolph Sacetis, the harbormaster of Selhorys. I am making a demarche on behalf of Volantis. May I ask what is the purpose of you and your army coming here?"
Liu Yuan reached out and invited him to sit down: "Mr. Rudolph, please sit down. We are just a passing mercenary group, called the 'Sun and Moon Battle Group,' which was just established recently. We are just passing by here. As you can see, we have a lot of people, so we may need to buy some food and supplies in Selhorys. Please don't be nervous."
The corners of Rudolph's mouth twitched slightly. It was the first time he had heard of a mercenary group with more than 40,000 people. But he still said with a smile: "Your mercenary group will surely become famous all over the world. I wonder what supplies you need? I know many big merchants and I believe they will meet your needs." The following things were easy. Liu Yuan gave him a purchase list, and the things he needed were not many. The other party also expressed sincerity, basically selling them at half the market price. Rudolph also represented Selhorys, hoping to further cooperate in the future.
When the people of Selhorys woke up the next morning, they found that the camp on the opposite side was empty, leaving only a few traces, as if yesterday was just a dream.
Liu Yuan's team continued north for four days and saw a half-collapsed bridge on the Lorne River. The stone bridge deck was 40 feet above the river, spanning both sides of the Lorne River. The looming thick fog shrouded the river surface, and even from here, you could see the ruins in the distance, hidden in the thick fog. This is the Sorrows, the land known as the Cursed Land.
