The Mountain of Ice and Fire
#776 - Tomb of the Ancients: James Encounters Bandits
“Jaime, we have to leave immediately.” Centurion Zangwill Steven rushed into Jaime's tent.
Jaime had just woken up, half-lying on the bed, his upper body exposed, revealing thick black chest hair. The tent was warm with burning charcoal. Zangwill Steven lifted the thick curtain, bringing in a bone-chilling cold.
“What happened?”
“The Clegane forces have completely surrounded the Night's Watch, and Jon Snow has been forcibly taken away at swordpoint. Scouts are on their way to report to Eddard Stark. Our sentries saw the Clegane forces coming towards us in three directions.”
Jaime flipped out of bed. Dressing was not easy with only one hand, and Zangwill Steven hurried to help Jaime.
“Sound the horn, prepare for battle!” Jaime shouted out of the tent.
“Yes, General!” a guard replied loudly.
Soon, the horn sounded, echoing throughout the camp and reaching the Northern army's tent area in the Godswood, which was exactly what Jaime wanted.
Jaime's 'King's Landing Army' had only three hundred men left after the battle against the White Walkers. These three hundred men quickly assembled, fully armed. Jaime walked out of the tent, and the three hundred-man squads outside were already assembled.
Those remaining were absolute elites, the strongest in combat.
Jaime volunteered to be the vanguard in the battle against the White Walkers, and his elite 'King's Landing Army' suffered the greatest casualties.
“Form ranks!” Jaime roared. *Clang*, he drew his longsword!
The Clegane forces came from the left, center, and right. They were not moving fast, as if deliberately giving Jaime time to organize his troops.
The left army was led by Soro Curtis, the leader of the swamps of Claw Isle, and Senza Leo, the leader of the mountain tribes. The two generals rode on tall warhorses, wielding long-handled double-bladed axes. The warriors behind them were all tribal warriors, mostly armed with axes, iron hammers, spears, and spiked clubs. This force numbered a thousand men.
The right army was led by One-Eyed Tyme, the leader of the mountain tribes of the Mountains of the Moon, Little Beauty Qila, Heavy Axe Shagga, Conn, and Haggai, the leader of the cave-dwelling tribes. This force also numbered over a thousand men.
The central army was led by Black Bear Rorge, Fang, and Notebook, the Mountain's enforcers. This force also numbered a thousand men.
The three thousand-man squads, with their leaders riding on warhorses, slowly approached Jaime's tent area, singing songs unsuitable for children.
All three armies had their swords drawn and spears raised, three moving dragons of weapons, treating Jaime's three hundred-man squads as nothing.
Jaime turned back and saw that his soldiers all had tense and solemn expressions on their faces.
The relaxed and confident expressions they had when facing the great battle before were gone. The pressure from the Clegane forces was like that of the White Walkers.
Jaime felt a pang in his heart. He decided to protect the lives of these loyal and brave soldiers who followed him.
It was enough for three hundred men to return out of a thousand. He couldn't let the 'King's Landing Army' be completely wiped out.
“Ser Jaime, what exactly happened?” Centurion Elliot Mackie said, “We need to send brothers to see the Mountain, we need to know what happened.”
“The Mountain was attacked last night, and at that time, only he and I were together.” Jaime said calmly. *Clang*, he sheathed his longsword and shouted, “Brothers, I'm going to see the Mountain. This matter has nothing to do with you. Put away your weapons and don't resist. If the Mountain wants to kill someone, I'll give him my head.”
“Jaime, don't you understand? They're encircling us on three sides, they have no intention of letting us escape. They're coming slowly to make us fear and be afraid, they want to play with killing us. You hurry and escape to the north, we'll hold off the Clegane men.” Another centurion, Lam Patrick, said, “The Clegane bandits don't reason, the Clegane soldiers are as cruel and vicious as the Mountain.”
“Don't fight, or you'll all die.” Jaime shouted sternly, “Put away your weapons, that's an order. I will never abandon you and escape alone.”
The three hundred most elite 'King's Landing Army' soldiers looked at each other, they put down their swords, their expressions dim.
“Sound the horn, send a signal to the Northern army.” Jaime ordered.
The horn blower faced the Northern people's tent area and blew the horn: *Woooooo*——
*
The three Clegane armies slowly closed in, unhurriedly, completely surrounding Jaime's 'King's Landing Army' tent area. After the warriors closed in, Notebook Mark Clegane slowly rode up to Jaime. He slowly drew his longsword, and the sword's spine struck his chest armor, making a loud *smack*.
This was a signal. The weapons of the three thousand soldiers struck together. The short swords of the sword and shield soldiers struck their shields, axes and longswords struck armor, iron hammers and iron rods struck the ground. For a time, booming sounds rang out together.
The three hundred besieged 'King's Landing Army' soldiers stirred slightly. The horn blower's horn was also disrupted and suppressed by this rhythm. In the booming sound, an arrow flew out, hitting the horn blower's throat. The horn blower flipped over and fell, his throat gurgling, his hands grabbing the arrow shaft stuck in his throat. Another arrow flew, *thump*, hitting his forehead. The horn blower's eyes widened, and he died.
“Stop!” Jaime roared, “Sir Mark Clegane, take me to see the Mountain, this matter has nothing to do with them. They are warriors who fought against the White Walkers, they are your comrades, they have made great contributions in the battle against the White Walkers, no one can ignore the honor they have earned.”
Notebook was the youngest of all the generals, he was still a teenager. Originally thin, he had become sturdy and burly in the years of civil war, his face resolute. He was the leader of this force, and it was he who initiated this action: to cut off Jaime's head and slaughter Jaime's 'King's Landing Army'.
Notebook Mark Clegane, Artist Polliver Clegane, Sweetmouth Rafford Clegane, Executioner Dunsen Clegane, these four were the first four evil henchmen to follow the Mountain. Notebook had always been the Mountain's quartermaster for all military supplies, food, and pay for the Clegane army. This made him very depressed, he preferred to lead troops into battle, charging into the fray.
Notebook stopped the striking. The young man slowly raised his hand, and the striking sounds of the three thousand-man squads stopped abruptly.
“Kingslayer, is Lancel your brother?” Notebook said coldly.
“Yes!”
Notebook did not call Jaime 'Ser', nor did he call Jaime's name, but directly called Jaime 'Kingslayer' in an insulting tone.
Kingslayer, Jaime's infamous name. He himself had always deeply resented this title.
“Kingslayer, when Lancel attacked the Mountain, was it you who invited the Mountain to the grain stockpile?”
“Yes!”
“What else do you have to say?”
“I was not aware of Lancel's attack on the Mountain. I want to see the Mountain. If he wants me to die, you can cut off my head.”
“I will bring your head to the Mountain.” Notebook said, his eyes flashing fiercely, his longsword stabbing at Jaime's throat.
*Clang*!
A loud sound, a sword stretched out from the side, blocking this fatal stab. Another sword was like a flash of light, directly slicing at the legs of Notebook's warhorse. The sharp sword light flashed past the horse's legs, and the horse's legs *whooshed* and broke in two. The warhorse crashed forward, kneeling down, its hindquarters arching high in a mournful whinny, throwing Notebook over and into the 'King's Landing Army' ranks. *Clang clang clang clang*, several swords were drawn together, pointing at the dazed Notebook.
The three thousand-man squads of the Clegane army had not yet reacted, and Notebook had already become a prisoner of the 'King's Landing Army'.
The generals were caught off guard, completely stunned for a moment!
The first to strike and block Notebook's longsword was Centurion Zangwill Steven; the one who resolutely drew his sword and cut off Notebook's horse's legs was Centurion Lam Patrick, who was also the one who wanted to risk his life to hold off the Clegane forces and let Jaime escape.
Notebook Mark had little practical experience. He was in charge of logistics, and whenever he had the opportunity, he would always personally lead troops into battle. In an action of three thousand against three hundred, he was confident of victory and did not take the 'King's Landing Army' seriously at all.
In the year 298 of Aegon's Conquest, four years ago, Notebook had dealt with the 'King's Landing City Watch', winning completely. From that day on, he did not take the 'King's Landing Royal Guard and City Watch' seriously. But he ignored one point: the person leading the army this time was Jaime Lannister, not some corrupt officer in the King's Landing City Watch.
The thousand 'King's Landing Army' soldiers that Jaime had selected were all elites. Even if they were not elites, under Jaime's training, they would quickly turn cowards into warriors, and warriors into elites. The three hundred who remained after the great battle, especially the three centurions, were all iron-blooded generals. When it came to life-and-death duels, fist-to-fist, these people wouldn't even blink.
When Notebook Mark drew his sword to kill Jaime, he never thought that the centurions beside Jaime would dare to fight back.
In Mark's eyes, the King's Landing City Watch and the Royal Guard were all cowards. But he forgot that Jaime was leading this army as the vanguard against the White Walkers.
Mark Clegane was captured by Jaime's soldiers, and Centurion Elliot Mackie's short sword was held against Mark's throat: “Boy, if you dare to move, I will stab seventeen or eighteen holes in your neck.”
“Do it, you bastard!” Mark spat out a mouthful of saliva, hitting Elliot Mackie's face.
Elliot Mackie using death to threaten Notebook was a fatal mistake. In the Mountain's army, even the most ordinary rear affairs officer would be ridiculed and unable to continue if he showed fear of death under the threat of swords.
The Clegane army feared nothing more than death.
Elliot Mackie was destined to be killed by Notebook because of this sentence! Unless he killed Notebook first!
Elliot raised his hand, the short sword hilt striking Notebook's forehead, Jaime stretched out his right hand and grabbed his arm.
Jaime shouted: “Comrades of the Clegane army, the attack on the Mountain has nothing to do with me. Lancel Lannister attacked the Mountain, I had no prior knowledge. I want to take General Mark to see the Mountain. If the Mountain wants us all to die, all he needs is an order. The Mountain is our commander, we will completely obey orders, there is no need for you to encircle and capture us. Can I ask you to make way now?”
“Kill them all!” Mark Clegane shouted, “That's an order, kill them all, leave no one alive.”
Soro Curtis and Senza Leo, the two leaders of Claw Isle, raised their long-handled heavy axes. One-Eyed Tyme of the Mountains of the Moon also raised his axe, and Little Beauty Qila drew her sword. Shagga and Conn raised their heavy axes one after another…
“Form ranks, prepare for battle!” Centurion Lam Patrick shouted loudly, he stood in front of the ranks, his longsword raised, his hands gripping the sword hilt tightly, making a battle-ready posture.
*Hah!*
Three hundred soldiers roared together! The longswords of three hundred soldiers were like a forest, *thwack thwack thwack thwack*——the shields of the shield bearers were quickly arranged together…
“Soldiers, is killing us all the Mountain's order?” Jaime shouted sternly.
The momentum of the Clegane army, which was about to attack, faltered!
“If you have the Mountain's military order, we will lay down our weapons and kneel down to accept beheading; if not, we have the right to counterattack, and will report your violation of military orders to Commander-in-Chief Mountain…“
Enforcement Captain Black Bear Rorge and Fang looked at each other. This action was initiated by Notebook. The brothers heard that Lannister had attacked the Mountain, causing the Mountain to be seriously injured, and were outraged. There was no military order from the Mountain.
“If you can't produce the Mountain's military order, then please make way. If you don't make way, then we can only fight our way out to see the Mountain.” Jaime shouted sternly, *clang*, he drew his longsword, “I will be the first to kill anyone who dares to disobey the Mountain's military order!”
The Clegane generals looked at each other, no one stepped forward. Notebook also choked!
*Woooooo*!
The horn sounded, and a group of men and horses quickly rushed over. The leader was Eddard Stark.
“Stop, stop everything!” Eddard Stark's voice came from afar. He rode his warhorse, and several riders galloped over quickly. Behind him were the Northern army running with a *thump thump*.
Except for the generals, the allied soldiers had lost their warhorses!
*
Several days later, on the vast First Men burial grounds south of Winterfell, a group of men and horses were marching. The four generals walking in front were Jaime Lannister and his three centurions Lam Patrick, Elliot Mackie, and Zangwill Steven.
The four generals rode warhorses, behind them were the three hundred 'King's Landing Army' soldiers on foot.
Although these soldiers had stayed in the North for many months and learned various ways to keep warm from the Northerners, they still couldn't stand the increasing cold. They only hoped to quickly leave the North and enter the warmer South.
Even in the dead of winter, with heavy snow falling, the South was still warmer than the North. The cold of the North was as cold as a knife, drilling straight into the bone marrow.
*Whoosh!*
A sudden, unheralded sound of an arrow breaking through the air rang out. The sound was not obvious in the wind and snow. The soldiers were traveling in fatigue and cold, only the soldiers at the very back of the column heard the sound and became alert.
The arrow came too fast, *thump*, hitting a soldier in the back of the heart. The soldier groaned and fell to the ground with a *thump*.
“Enemy attack! Enemy attack!” the soldiers at the back of the column shouted.
The column was advancing in three columns. By the time Jaime and the three centurions turned their horses around, a group of masked cavalrymen riding tall warhorses roared in. These people all used long-handled heavy axes, and each warhorse was extremely handsome. There were not many people in the group, only thirty riders. These thirty masked men were like a whirlwind, slashing wildly with their long-handled heavy axes on the galloping warhorses, like a hurricane sweeping through the rear of the King's Landing Army, instantly leaving behind more than a dozen corpses.
“Form ranks!” Jaime shouted.
The well-trained King's Landing army quickly formed a square formation. Jaime and three centurions rode their horses in front of the formation, ready for battle. However, their opponents laughed loudly and did not engage. A sharp military whistle sounded, and the enemy队伍 roared away, their horses' hooves fading quickly into the wind and snow!
Jaime tallied the losses: thirteen brothers dead, five seriously injured.
In this frigid weather, serious injuries were a death sentence.
Jaime's nightmare had only just begun!
