The rest is just noise
Chapter VIII The Unbearable Weight of Life
Louis got into K.C's car.
K.C gave him the impression that he was an upright, approachable and good person.
In the car, he didn't play music like other drivers, but talked about himself with Louis.
"You know, when I was at the University of San Francisco, Bill was my roommate." K.C couldn't help laughing when he thought of that. "I was very sensitive to the sharp racial conflicts at the time and didn't want to talk to anyone, so I
I haven't spoken to Bill all semester."
Think about it, your roommate living under the same roof won't talk to you for a whole semester.
Louis can't imagine that kind of life because his roommate Wu Sansheng at DSU has to say at least three sentences every day to reflect on his mistakes.
In fact, it is impossible for him to only reflect on himself.
He always speaks.
Speaking in English, Chinese and native dialect, Louis still doesn’t know what “Gan Lin Liang” means to this day.
They were obviously introducing themselves to each other, but K.C seemed to think Louis' story would be boring, so he kept telling his own.
Moreover, he skipped the player period that deserves the most special mention.
It seems that for him, his coaching career is the crowning glory of his life.
He began his coaching career immediately after retiring, coaching at Jewish Brandeis University outside Boston from 1967 to 1970. From 1970 to 1971, he served as an assistant coach at Harvard University.
In the 1970s, he entered the Lakers as an assistant to Bill Sharman and helped the Lakers win the first championship in team history. Then he went to the ABA as the head coach of the San Diego Conquerors (1972-73).
Thereafter, he was hired as the head coach of the Washington Bullets in 1974. In his second season, he led the Bullets to the 1975 Eastern Conference Finals, defeating the defending champion Celtics 4-2 and reaching the Finals.
Being swept by Rick Barry's Warriors made people forget that he led that Bullets team to 60 wins in the regular season.
In 1976, he led the Bullets to the "Miracle of Ridgefield."
"I'm there!" Louis said suddenly.
"What?"
"I was there when you guys were eliminated by the Cavaliers!" Louis said excitedly. "After Dick Snyder (SG/SF) hit that shot at the last moment of Game 7, I heard the loudest thing in my life.
Loud noise!"
K.C said unexpectedly: "Are you from Cleveland?"
"That's right."
"Why are you here in Boston?"
"I'm here to chase my dream."
K.C said jokingly: "Dream? What dream? Isn't it to be a professional scout?"
Damn it, why did he tell me my dream all at once?
Louis wanted to say no, but the atmosphere had already reached this point...
"Okay, this is your hotel?" K.C didn't seem to like it here, "It's not very good, and it's close to Polk Street, where there are often protests."
"It's okay, this won't affect me, just wait a moment."
Louis quickly got out of the car and ran into the hotel to take out John Long's scouting report and the only game video.
This isn't quite what he planned.
He originally wanted to face Reed Auerbach and hand this carefully crafted scouting report into his hands, but now it seems that giving it to K.C is the wisest decision.
Because K.C already had a little trust in him, even if he didn't believe that the 18-year-old could make a decent scouting report, he came here in person.
Auerbach is certainly one of the smartest general managers in the league, but until Louis proves his ability, how much can he value an 18-year-old kid?
Louis put himself in his shoes, if he were before time travel, and a college student called him and said he had made a scouting report, would he be interested?
"That's all," said Louis.
K.C unexpectedly said: "And VHS?"
"Do you think I'm joking? How can we make a scouting report without video?" Louis said helplessly.
"Okay, thank you for supporting my work, how can I thank you?"
K.C thought this was an equal exchange.
"I'm here to chase my dream, K.C." Louis smiled.
K.C doesn't think he can help a kid fulfill his dream for a scouting report whose quality is difficult to guarantee.
"Tell me."
"I want to be a professional scout."
As soon as Louis finished speaking, the air in the space between him and K.C seemed to stop flowing, and everything froze.
They looked at each other, motionless.
"Your dream...is to become a professional scout?" K.C suddenly felt that the baby boomer generation has no future. This is such a decadent generation. How can any young person want to become a professional scout?
Now that the conversation has begun, and K.C doesn't think he's joking like others, Louis might as well take the topic a little deeper.
"Of course it's not just a professional scout. I want to enter the professional basketball circle, but my skills are average, so it's impossible to be a professional player, but I can still do it in other ways. For example, becoming a scout.
This is my starting point, but not my end." What Louis did was contrary to the meaning of his name, "To tell you the truth, I previously participated in the Cavaliers' scouting recruitment interview."
Now that Louis shows up here and asks him for a scouting job, K.C knows the result.
"What did they say?"
"I was kicked out by the censors without even seeing Coach Bill Fitch." Louis said mockingly, "They thought I was too young and thought I was joking, but, K.C, please
Trust me, I'm serious."
Louis is only 18 years old. If he wants to play a prank, he doesn't have to go to this extent.
If he only had three minutes of heat, he wouldn't have rushed from Cleveland to Boston. K.C knew why he chose Boston. This was indeed the only place where a weirdo at his age who wanted to be a scout would have a chance to become a scout.
"I will stay in this hotel for another three days. This is the hotel's phone number. I will be in the hotel at all times except in the morning and evening. If you have any results, please call me." Louis added the hotel's contact information.
Leave it to K.C.
K.C accepted it and said, "I will take a good look at this scouting report when I get back. Even if your report fails, I will pay you according to the standard of a regular scouting report."
"Thanks."
Every new entrant needs a guide. Louis is no stranger to professional basketball, but professional basketball in the late 1970s, especially American professional basketball, was a mystery to him.
He knows that the league is in a difficult situation, he knows that it is difficult to get into the industry, and he knows that many people think that the league is on shaky ground, but he knows that the future of the league is promising. Even if he doesn’t know much about the NBA in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, he can
Use the prophetic advantage of a time traveler and the work experience accumulated in the Xinjiang team in his previous life to gain his own place.
The premise of all this is that K.C Jones wants to lead him through the door.
When K.C got home, the first thing he did was not open the scouting report, but play the VHS tape that Louis gave him.
He wants to know if the player he likes is the same as Louis.
Soon, he locked onto the University of Michigan's second position who was constantly catching and shooting from both wings.
He is very fast, and although his shooting movements are not beautiful, he has a quick start and is not sloppy, and he can handle high-intensity defense, play hard, and be aggressive...
K.C looked at Louis' scouting report while watching.
"John Long is a scoring machine, especially on the left and right sides of the free throw line. He has very strong firepower. Due to the weak strength of the school district, his playing style is not strong enough and he is loyal to his hometown (he has a strong desire to be selected by a team in the Michigan area).
It is very likely that he will not participate in large-scale workouts to improve his draft stock."
"John is very fast, has good athletic ability, and has mature shooting skills. His jump shot is characterized by his shooting speed, which is very fast, making it difficult for defenders to guard against him. In addition, his rebounding ability is very good for the same position.
, who dares to compete with the inside line and is always the hardest-working player on the court."
"Weaknesses: Strength needs to be strengthened, and the ability to create shooting opportunities independently needs to be increased."
K.C knows why there is only one short sentence, because Louis only has video of this game, and in this game, Long's performance was impeccable. He needs more video to see his other problems.
Regarding this game, and the scouting report provided by Louis...K.C has been in the basketball industry for so many years, and this is the first time he has seen such a detailed scouting report.
Contemporary scouting is still very primitive and usually only lists obvious strengths and weaknesses.
Other problems will be tested by the trial training results.
The quality of players and other hidden dangers are often dictated by the head coaches of their universities. However, it is common for these people to talk nonsense in order to help their students improve their rankings. Therefore, every team that is good at drafting often
The NCAA has its own connections. They can make judgments based on the evaluation of players by uninterested third parties.
And Louis not only listed his various strengths and weaknesses, but also emphasized that he is a hard-working person.
This is an alluring scouting report. A coach who has no determination may make up his mind to select someone after seeing this report.
What surprised Jones the most was the end of the scouting report.
"His best development prospect: Sam Jones."
"His worst prospect: himself."
The concept of "development prospects" is definitely a pioneering work in modern times. Usually, in order to let people understand the characteristics of a player, scouts will say that XX is like XX, but development prospects give a concept, not a definite concept.
K.C couldn't sleep. On the one hand, he wanted to know more about John Long. On the other hand, he had to hand in this report as soon as possible and apply for expansion from Reed Auerbach.
He has such insight at the age of 18. He cannot be picked up by other teams!
K.C felt itchy as if he saw 18-year-old Kareem Jabbar skipping college to participate in the draft.
Louis is too young, and scouting is by no means his final destination. Many coaches he is familiar with, and many outstanding management personnel who have successfully built championship teams, all started as scouts in the beginning.
Because these excellent scouts often know best what kind of personnel a successful team needs to be composed of.
That night, Louis was bargaining with the hostess of the hotel, hoping that the room price would be cheaper. If necessary, he would not be able to dedicate his body to help with some manual labor - please don't think wrongly, although he was a bit promiscuous after time travel, but
The boss's wife's age, appearance, and Tiger tank-like figure were beyond his tolerance.
This is a weight he cannot bear!
Suddenly, the hotel phone rang.
Louis felt inexplicably that this was a call to him.
The landlady answered the phone, chatted for a few words, and then hung up.
"Are you very rich? Why do scammers call you?" the landlady asked unkindly.
"fraud?"
"Yes, that liar claimed to be K.C. Jones, and asked me to inform you that you are welcome to join the Celtics." The landlady said disdainfully, "What is this if not a liar? Can K.C call you? Boy, send me a message
What are you doing? Are you being targeted by scammers because you show your wealth?"
A few seconds later, the landlady witnessed an adult man in his prime going crazy in her hotel.
He howled as he ran.
"Acridine~~~!! Acridine acridine acridine!!!"
