The Rise of the Third Reich

Chapter 207 Strategic Deception Bureau

When the Military Intelligence Service and the Stasi were reorganized into the Reich Central Security Service, three departments were separated from them and directly under the General Staff. they are, respectively:

1. Miuta Special Forces, which was assigned to the Air Force led by Air Force General Kesselring and became the backbone of the proposed airborne force;

2. Intelligence Research Division, which is engaged in the analysis and research of foreign military situations. It was incorporated into the General Staff Headquarters and later reorganized into the Military Intelligence Division;

3. Strategic Deception Department. This department is led by Lieutenant Colonel Reinhard Galen, an espionage wizard who was "discovered" by Hersman himself. When the Military Intelligence Agency and the Stasi were reorganized, this department was also integrated into the General Staff Department and expanded, from the Strategic Deception Department to the Strategic Deception Bureau!

Of course, the daily job of Lieutenant Colonel Reinhard Galen, the "seat" of the Bureau of Strategic Deception, is not to go on the radio in person to fool people. He has a lot of things to do, and is in charge of 7 departments and 1 central command post.

Seven of them are responsible for strategic deception work in seven aspects, including the navy, army, air force, military industry, strategic material reserves, secret weapons and military communications. The central command post is responsible for the "large-scale comprehensive deception project", which is a large-scale scam that requires the use of various forces to carefully deploy.

This time the emperor's coronation parade was organized by this central command post.

Yes, this military parade is actually a big scam - in fact, most public military parades contain elements of strategic deception. No country will openly display its true military strength in front of outsiders.

What is displayed in the military parade is only what the general staffs of various countries want others to see.

When Hessmann and Schleicher arrived at the airport, as the deputy commander-in-chief of the parade headquarters, Reinhardt had a very tall and broad forehead and looked a bit bookish, as if he was a scholar. At this time, Galen was explaining the flight route to several air force officers at a military airport outside Berlin.

"Remember, it's not one circle, but five! Fly repeatedly according to the flight route during the rehearsal... that is, don't land after flying back, and then fly according to the prescribed route. You must fly five times in total before landing. You must not make any mistakes. You know. Yet?"

"Report to your Excellency, Marshal, General," Reinhard Galen reported to Hessmann and Schleicher after confirming that several air force captains understood the flight route. "The flight route has been carefully designed. "Friends" watching the military parade can be fooled into thinking that we have sent five times the actual number of aircraft to participate in the military parade, so that they will be extremely impressed by Germany's powerful heavy bomber force."

Of course, these heavy bombers that were meant to impress Britain, France, and Poland were also the product of strategic deception—the planes were, of course, real and had been built since the early 1930s at the suggestion of Air Force Chief of Staff Val T. Weaver. The new four-engine heavy bomber that was started to be developed was to replace the famous J.28H four-engine heavy bomber (the "BT Express" BT-1 heavy bomber that the Soviets used to scare the Japanese).

According to the requirements of the Air Force, the new heavy bomber should be able to carry at least 5 tons of bombs from Germany to bomb the entire British Isles and France!

In other words, the effective combat radius of the Luftwaffe's new heavy bombers must be higher than 1,000 kilometers. Moreover, in order to effectively break through British and French air defenses, the new heavy bomber also needs to have night navigation capabilities and high-altitude bombing capabilities - and the two performance requirements of "high altitude" and "night flight" are to avoid ground firepower and enemy aircraft interception.

This is related to the "bombing deterrence strategy" that the German Air Force in this time and space adhered to before breaking through the Treaty of Versailles. At that time, the German Army was weak and could only adopt a delaying strategy against the enemy who was fully invading. In this case, Germany's only way to defend itself was to use long-range bombers to bomb the enemy's large cities indiscriminately to force it to sue for peace.

Of course, this is just a theoretical "self-defense method." However, it was very popular in the late 1920s and early 1930s. At that time, Italian General Douhet proposed the "air force theory of victory", believing that future wars would see a pattern in which the army was trapped in trench defenses and relied on the air force to bomb enemy cities to win.

The "BT Visit Incident" that occurred between the Soviet Union and Japan in 1928 made other countries realize the importance of strategic bombing. Therefore, the "bombing deterrence strategy" was continued to be used by the German army until Germany restored its armaments.

In 1932, after Germany resumed its armaments, the Luftwaffe at that time felt that the performance of the J.28 was lagging behind and the space for upgrades was limited. It needed to develop a new bomber to ensure the continued implementation of the "bombing deterrence strategy."

Therefore, the task of developing a new heavy bomber was handed over to Fokker, Junkers and Dornier, which were at the height of their power in the field of civil aviation at that time.

From 1935 to 1936, Fokker, Juncker and Dornier successively produced products of their own design, including Fokker's Fokker F.36 and Juncker's Ju.819.

However, the Fokker F.36, which has the best performance among them, did not appear in this parade. This model adopts a high-wing monoplane, dual vertical tails, and a tricycle landing gear layout. It has a solid fuselage and powerful self-defense firepower. It is equipped with Four BMW 700 series engines using turbocharging technology, a heavy bomber that can fully cope with high-altitude bombing missions, are actually the real winners of the "new heavy bomber tender" and have received the most orders.

In order to achieve the "high-altitude performance" required by the Air Force, Junkers and Dornier chose the liquid-cooled engine of Yumo Company, which did not have outstanding performance. The result is that the empty weight and take-off weight of the Ju.89 and Do.19 are far inferior to the Fokker F.36 equipped with a turbocharged air-cooled engine.

However, Ju.89 and Do.19 still received 30 orders each, and all 60 Ju.89 and Do.19 have now been delivered to the German Air Force, and they will all participate in today's military parade.

In addition to these 60 new heavy bombers, another 100 J.28H will also appear in the sky over Berlin. 160 planes will circle five times in the sky over Berlin, giving off the momentum of 800 planes.

The reason for exaggerating the size of the Ju.89 and Do.19 fleets is to implement a "strategic deception plan" against the United Kingdom, France and Poland - the "Black Plan".

The plan was to convince Germany's enemies that Germany would win the final victory of the war through a year-long strategic bombing campaign using thousands of four-engine heavy bombers such as Ju.89, Do.19 and J.28H.

This seems very conceivable, because the Keynes Plan and the expanded Soviet-German cooperation made the German aviation industry, especially the production capacity of civilian passenger aircraft and transport aircraft, much stronger than in history. Until 1935, the five major German aviation manufacturing giants, including Fokker, Junkers, Heinkel, Focke-Wulf and Dornier, maintained their lead in the 1920s and still controlled the world except the United States and the Soviet Union. 70% to 80% of the civil aviation market.

In the field of medium and heavy bombers based on civilian passenger aircraft/transport aircraft, Germany also has a greater advantage than countries such as Britain and France!

"Very good!" Hessman glanced at the planes on the tarmac outside the window, seemingly endless, and nodded with satisfaction, "This is exactly what I want, we want them to know that we are There are a lot of big aircraft that can be used to bomb London, Paris and Warsaw, which will scare them, and to increase the intimidation effect, we can also use the Ju.89 and Do.19 on the Spanish battlefield."

"But will our doing so allow the enemy to speed up the development of advanced fighter jets?" Schleicher was still a little worried.

"They have sped up!" Hessman laughed. "Britain and France have begun to speed up their research. However, the air superiority fighters they are researching cannot deal with our heavy bombers. Because according to the concepts we instilled in them, these heavy bombers The target is their big cities. Therefore, these large aircraft do not necessarily need to attack during the day. They can use the cover of night to bomb Paris, London, Warsaw... In this way, the British, French and Poles need to develop night fighters. These night fighters end up being a huge waste!"

Night air combat in this era is very difficult because there is no lightweight radar available, and even if an airborne radar is developed, it cannot be installed on aircraft such as the Bf-109 or Spitfire. Generally, twin-engine heavy fighter jets are equipped with searchlights and radars for combat. However, this kind of bulky twin-engine fighter has poor ability to fight during the day, and is no match for the flexible and lightweight single-engine aircraft. Moreover, even if Ju.89 and Do.19 may attack during the day, they will adopt a high-altitude penetration method. For this reason, the United Kingdom and France must focus on the development and production of fighter jets on the liquid-cooled route with better high-altitude performance, thereby further expanding Germany's advantage in the air-cooled route.

Of course, Britain and France can also form a huge group of heavy bombers like Germany, and also use night air strikes to counterattack - but Hersman does not believe that Britain and France, mainly because the British really dare to attack without the arrival of German bombers , easily provoking a battle to bomb the city at night.

Because the Strategic Deception Bureau will make them believe that Germany has a larger and more advanced heavy bomber force. Unlike Goering, Hessmann did not pin his hopes of conquering England on indiscriminate bombing. He doesn't have that many precious pilots to fight the British.

Moreover, in his view, blockade was the most effective means to severely damage Britain's war potential, and the best way to conquer Britain was to land at the right time.
