The Second Empire of Azeroth
#57 - Tactician
Seventy percent of the Horde's warships were left in the river, and a large portion of the remaining thirty percent were set ablaze. The orcs were no longer on the decks; they were all relying on the oars below deck to navigate the river.
The river was filled with burning warships and drowning orcs. Some orcs were lucky enough to find floating ice blocks to cling to. However, deadly arrows awaited them, shot by the high elf rangers and B Company soldiers.
Roger and Alleria also joined in the shooting game, engaging in a friendly competition, but the result was a draw.
Or rather, neither of them cared about winning or losing.
While shooting arrows, they exchanged archery tips.
Because of his Hundred Steps Piercing Willow skill, Roger's archery was more physics-based, with heavy arrows and powerful attacks. He used a strong bow to increase range, hitting the target as his eye directed his hand. Alleria's archery was more magic-oriented. She could conjure various magical arrows at will and apply them widely, even combining them to create magical traps.
At Windfeather Outpost, Roger and the others gathered again in the command hall.
Kurdran's laughter never stopped. "Hahaha, Rogers, you are a brilliant tactician. You will always be a friend of Aerie Peak."
Fordring also praised, "I have participated in many wars, but I have never seen one as full of ingenuity as this one. No wonder Lord Lothar trusts you so much; you are worthy of trust."
The dwarves and high-ranking officers of Lordaeron also nodded in agreement. Initially, they were not very confident in Roger's abilities, but after this battle, they were in awe of him.
The Alliance's biggest loss in this battle was the damage to a Frost Amplification Staff, one of Medivh's collectibles. It wasn't even an epic-level item; its only function was to release a large amount of cold air.
However, even such a fine-quality weapon, when combined with the Frost Nova spell, had the ability to freeze the river surface. Although the ice was easily broken, the Alliance army heavily damaged the Horde's fleet by exploiting the time difference created by shattering the ice.
Gryphon riders threw oil barrels, and mages and rangers ignited the fuel. This simple procedure resulted in heavy losses for the Horde.
Alleria smiled at Roger. She had to admit that, in terms of tactics, even a ranger couldn't compare to Roger.
[Received recognition from high-ranking Alliance leaders such as Kurdran Wildhammer, Tirion Fordring, and Alleria Windrunner. Gained the title 'Tactician' and received 5 achievement points.]
Tactician: Hero title. Based on the battlefield intelligence gathered, formulate the most appropriate tactics. The more intelligence gathered, the faster the tactics can be formulated, and the more perfect the tactics will be.
Including the 2 achievement points he had previously, Roger now had 7 achievement points.
Competing in archery with Alleria had raised his hunter level to 24. He spent 2 skill points to learn Scorching Arrow and Thunderous Arrow, magical arrows infused with fire and wind elements.
He immediately strengthened these two skills.
Scorching Arrow (Beginner): Splash, Burning, and Burst increased by 10%.
Thunderous Arrow (Beginner): Splash, Paralysis, and Lightning increased by 10%.
Learning these two skills was entirely due to his exchange with Alleria. If Alleria hadn't told him the techniques, it would have been difficult for Roger to learn these two skills, after all, his main profession was Arcane Master. He rarely even delved into the skills of the hero class Blademaster, let alone the ordinary class of Hunter.
Thinking of this, he looked at Alleria, only to find that she was also looking at him.
Roger suddenly felt a guilty conscience, and his eyes immediately turned elsewhere. His heart beat uncontrollably, and he felt a strange sense of shyness.
He knew that this was the suspension bridge effect.
However, he had to admit that he was quite attracted to Alleria's appearance.
Alleria's lips curled up, her eyes full of teasing. She didn't expect Roger to be such a shy young man. This was completely different from the calmness and decisiveness he had maintained before, and this contrast made Alleria feel very amused.
A gryphon rider descended from the sky, bringing news of the Horde fleet.
The Horde fleet had rested on the sea for two days and continued sailing north, without even taking away the orcs from Revantusk Village.
Kurdran said readily, "In addition to leaving gryphon riders to defend Aerie Peak, I will lead the remaining gryphon riders to fight alongside you."
"Thank you, but I also need some gryphons, about a hundred."
"No problem, I'll have people gather them from Aerie Peak immediately."
The orcs didn't control the red dragons, so the gryphons of Aerie Peak hadn't suffered serious losses. But even so, gathering a hundred gryphons was still difficult for Aerie Peak. Yet, even so, Kurdran didn't decline and readily agreed.
From this, it could be seen that Kurdran truly regarded Roger as a friend.
Roger didn't want to make things difficult for Kurdran, but they would be heading to Stratholme next, and riding gryphons was the fastest way to get there. Otherwise, it would be too late by the time Orgrim Doomhammer reached Zul'Aman and launched a large-scale attack on Quel'Thalas.
In that war, the Windrunner family would lose eighteen members, including Alleria's most beloved brother, Lirath Windrunner. The entire Windrunner family would be reduced to three sisters, and this would be the beginning of the Windrunner family's disaster.
Roger had no obligation to care about the Windrunner family's affairs, but as an ally, he couldn't stand by and watch Alleria lose her loved ones.
Soon, the gryphons were gathered. Roger led B Company, Alleria led the rangers, and together with Kurdran leading the gryphon riders, they took to the skies and headed towards Stratholme.
During the flight, Kurdran flew near Roger, "Rogers, it seems like he really likes you!"
Roger smiled and nodded. The gryphons ridden by the others were restless, but the gryphon he was riding was exceptionally well-behaved and very obedient to him. This was the power of the Will of Azeroth; any native Azerothian beast felt very close to him.
Stroking the gryphon's feathers, he was very satisfied with this mount. It could even withstand the aura of dragons, making it the most suitable mount for B Company. However, it would be difficult to equip all of B Company, as the number of gryphons was limited, and even the Wildhammer dwarves didn't have enough for themselves.
