#273 - Unexpected Road
The technology tree system (including the policy tree) in "Civilization" has a very interesting feature: research can be accelerated by some of the player's actions. This system is called 'Eureka,' which means 'I have found it' in ancient Greek, and is used to express the joy of discovering the truth.
I think the Eureka system adds more storytelling to "Civilization." It doesn't just coldly describe: 'Because a farm was built on a wheat resource, irrigation has been improved,' but expresses it in a more immersive way: after meeting with a foreign civilization, people realized the importance of writing; the discovery of natural wonders and the magnificence of the universe inspired people's enthusiasm for astrology; and wars with barbarians made people crave more powerful weapons, thus promoting the development of bronze casting...
These Eurekas add a sense of story to the game's progress through flexible presentation techniques, turning "Civilization" from a strategy game with the theme of civilization into a narrative game of 'watching the story of civilization development.'
This is also what distinguishes "Civilization" from other strategy games. The fun of the game does not only come from the game itself, but also allows players to explore and think about human civilization through this game, providing a richer game experience for light players who cannot find enjoyment in strategy.
"If you use your rich imagination when playing "Civilization," the game may be more interesting.
Imagine: In 203 AD, the Jin Yuan Kingdom declared war on the Qin Dynasty. The enemy surged in like dark clouds, banners covered the sky, and teams of brave soldiers holding battle-axes and wearing rhinoceros armor poured out of your capital, heading to the battlefield to fight the enemy's swordsmen.
Chariots charged and crisscrossed on the battlefield, the clashing of swords echoed, and the roar of warriors was endless. Arrows intertwined in the air like locusts, and brave soldiers, unafraid of life and death, bravely slashed and killed, with several people swarming up to cut the enemy's cavalry from their horses...
After the great battle, blood flowed like a river, and the corpses of warriors were scattered across the wilderness. You finally won this difficult war. Roosevelt turned pale and paid a thousand taels of gold as compensation for his reckless launching of the war; Hojo Tokimune was impressed by the strength of your civilization and sent an envoy to respectfully present 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa,' hoping to establish a long-lasting friendship with you.
As long as your imagination is rich enough, you can get endless fun in "Civilization." Shen Fu wrote in "Six Records of a Floating Life: Leisurely Joys": 'Focusing intently, I regarded clumps of grass as forests, insects and ants as beasts, raised soil and gravel as hills, and depressions as valleys, wandering in them in spirit, content and at ease.'
Perhaps the joy of our childhood comes from this infinite imagination.
"The adaptation of classic famous songs in "Civilization" is a major highlight. Each civilization has its own BGM, which mainly selects folk music, trying to incorporate the characteristics of the civilization.
The arrangement has 4 versions of music according to the different eras. Basically, it is like this: in ancient times, there were only simple melodies; the Middle Ages version is the closest to the original; the industrial era is symphonic; and the atomic era adds a lot of piano and other audio modifications on the basis of the industrial era, making it more magnificent and shocking.
In addition to the theme song, each civilization also has multiple interlude pieces, among which there are many extremely beautiful and classic folk tunes and original folk music, and some interlude pieces are even more exquisite than the theme song.
However, not all review media have given "Civilization" good reviews.
"The leader agenda in "Civilization" gives different civilizations' AIs different strategic styles, which I thought was quite interesting. But after playing a few rounds, frankly, the AI is as stupid as a pig! Although I haven't seen very smart AIs in other games either.
The main manifestation is that they often condemn you for some inexplicable reasons. For example, the Thousand Island Nation condemns me for not building ships every day. I'm really convinced. Is it great to be able to build ships? Why don't you come inland and build one? And Cleopatra of the Golden Pagoda Kingdom condemns me for being a heterosexual leader. Black question mark??? How can there be such a silly AI?
After condemning you, they become very dissatisfied with you, and then launch surprise wars or formal wars at any time. Low difficulty is okay, but the AI at high difficulty cheats, starting with 3 immigrants and 5 warriors, while you have 1 immigrant and 1 warrior. Hehe, you'll be killed in no time.
It is recommended that Longyuan replace all the leaders with tsundere paper dolls, so that people's complaints about AI will be solved easily.
"Overall, "Civilization" gives me the feeling that the early rhythm is reasonable, and the later operations are repetitive and cumbersome. There are not many things to do in the early stage. Send scouts to explore the road, choose technology, farm and build. Although there are not many decisions to make, they are all very important.
In the middle and late stages of the game, you usually have a dozen or even dozens of cities, some of which you built yourself, and some of which you snatched from the computer. Therefore, a lot of construction options pop up every round, but the value of these decisions is far less than in the early stage of the game. When your decisions are not so important and the operations are cumbersome, the game becomes boring, so I have given up the game several times in the middle stage. Can't there be a city hosting system?
Moreover, the barbarians in the game are too outrageous. Some people call this game "Barbarian," and I think that's so true. The first time I started the game, I was attacked by several barbarians shortly after the founding of the country. To be honest, the most awesome civilization in this world may be the barbarians.
Who can tell me where the barbarians' troops come from? They are endless, as if there is an interdimensional portal that keeps sending them troops!
"A completely garbage game.
First of all, the game's art style is cartoonish. Why doesn't a historical simulation game use a realistic art style? Bad review!
Moreover, the game completely lacks the seriousness that a historical simulation game should have. It doesn't restore history like "Sunset Showdown," nor does it have a background overhead like "Rise of Kingdoms." It's just a hodgepodge.
Gandhi is obviously a messenger of peace, but in the game, he becomes very fond of dropping nuclear bombs, and there is also an agenda called 'The Happiness Brought by Nuclear Weapons.' I really can't think of a reason for this design. This is clearly a slander against historical figures!
Satire is not nonsense, adaptation is not random compilation. Disrespecting history is to apologize to the people of the whole country, no, the whole world!
Bearing the banner of civilization, I can't feel a trace of civilization when playing. Condemnation and war run through the game. It should be renamed "Barbarian."
The clumsy diplomatic system directly extinguished the last bit of hope I had for this game. These AIs don't seem to have any leadership style at all. They are all like idiots, acting like three-year-old children, making this game, which was not very serious in the first place, even more like a child's play.
......
After reading the review of Evil Man Valley, Wang Jian was stunned by this bold idea. This is an unforeseen path.
After thinking about it carefully, it seems quite interesting? Maybe you can really launch a DLC and turn the leaders inside into tsundere girls?
However, Civilization has a MOD module, so maybe you don't have to wait for him to develop it, and the players will do it themselves.
