#378 - This monster is so ugly
The game begins.
The scene shifts on the screen, revealing a serene and tranquil indigo lake, upon which float several fragrant, pristine white lotus flowers. A gentle breeze seems to stir, rippling the water's surface and causing the lotus flowers to sway.
A clear, resounding chime echoes, followed by the flowing notes of a tranquil piano, like lotus blossoms slowly unfolding, their depth imbued with solemnity. The melodious flute plays a winding tune, bringing peace to the heart, as if commemorating a forgotten history.
Mu Jinxia was immediately surprised. Although the game's graphics were pixelated, they didn't feel rough. Instead, they evoked the feeling of an old oil painting weathered by time. The music was even more outstanding, perfectly complementing the game's background style.
She couldn't help but praise, "The music and graphics are amazing! I smell a masterpiece!"
"The BGM is indeed quite good."
"Calling it a masterpiece now might be a bit premature, but it definitely makes a good first impression."
"Also a pixel-style RPG, this feels much better than the graphics of 'Undertale'; it's very comfortable to look at."
"'Undertale' is most excellent in its setting, plot, and meta elements; the graphics are only so-so. 'Ruined City Story' looks more like a traditional RPG."
The viewers also started commenting.
At the bottom of the screen, a dialog box appeared: "Please determine the protagonist's background."
Next, four options popped up: Disciple of the Sage, Eldest Son of the Knight, Abandoned Child of the Sinner, Orphan of the Temple.
Mu Jinxia hesitated slightly: "It actually requires choosing the character's background. Does it affect the plot?"
Next, she clicked on each option to study them: "So the background also affects the class. Different backgrounds correspond to Mage, Knight, Thief, and Priest respectively.
The Abandoned Child of the Sinner and Orphan of the Temple look a bit miserable, so let's not consider them for now. The Knight should be melee, so let's choose the Disciple of the Sage. I still prefer being a mage, throwing skills from the back."
"Choose female for the gender. Oh, there's a character customization interface." Mu Jinxia's interest was immediately piqued.
The avatars mainly differed in hairstyle, with options like pigtails, braids, waves, smooth long hair, etc., and you could also adjust the color yourself.
Then there were the clothes: simple linen clothes, a black fitted dress, a white dress with ruffled frills, a red dress as fiery as flames, a blue top with a white skirt, and so on.
Finally, there were small accessories like ribbons, hair clips, and glasses.
"These clothes are all so beautiful; I don't know which one to choose..."
While Mu Jinxia was excitedly trying on clothes, the viewers kept making suggestions.
"White hair, white hair!"
"Golden pigtails, isn't the tsundere young lady appealing!"
"Black is so cool!"
Mu Jinxia thought for a moment and chuckled, "I prefer long, straight white hair, and let's choose this ruffled frill skirt with a purple ribbon embellishment. ơɱ"
Then, she entered the name "Meixia."
"Wow, you're really narcissistic."
"Shameless."
Mu Jinxia giggled. The name did have a bit of a narcissistic meaning.
"Meixia, an orphan raised by the sage, diligently studies the magic passed down from ancient times, hoping that this power will be used for the benefit of the world." Mu Jinxia couldn't help but complain after reading the character introduction, "So everyone's an orphan? Does the protagonist have some amazing background?"
Clicking "Start Story," the screen darkened.
On the pure black background, several lines of text appeared.
"As if being called by someone, you vaguely arrive at the forest outside the city.
The sky before dawn is still dim. You advance in the darkness and soon discover the entrance to a cave.
Under a tree that was accidentally struck by lightning a few days ago, burned to ashes, an entrance to the deep underground is revealed. It is pitch black inside, with no end in sight."
The BGM changed accordingly, and a strange, ethereal hum sounded, mysterious and melodious. The wind chimes were lightly tinkling, as if one were in a dark and deep underground cave, with water droplets falling overhead, the sound very soft, yet exceptionally clear.
Ahead may lie fierce monsters, or perhaps deeply buried treasures, exuding an aura of danger and temptation.
"This cave is indeed calling to you. You make up your mind and venture into the cave."
After the introduction, the map of the underground cave appeared, but most of it was shrouded in mist, unrevealed, with only a small area on the lower right edge lit up.
This seems to be a naturally formed cave hall, with a narrow path ahead, leading to an unknown destination.
"The screen's brightness is a bit dim?" Mu Jinxia muttered, and according to the game's prompt, clicked to trigger this event point.
Narration: "To better see the surroundings, you light the lantern you carry."
As the sound of a match striking rang out with a "shh", the screen immediately changed from dim to bright.
The description in the text, combined with the sound effect of the match striking and the change in the screen's brightness, made it seem as if the player had really taken out a lantern from their backpack and lit a match.
Mu Jinxia couldn't help but praise, "This detail is great!"
"Damn, I can imagine the scene!"
"Don't say it, this approach is quite novel!"
Although you can't see the character's movement on the map, imagining the scene through text creates a different kind of feeling.
"The air becomes unusually humid, and the path extends inward..."
After the lantern was lit, the fog was cleared a little, and a new event point appeared a few dozen meters inside the entrance.
Mu Jinxia made her selection, and a cutscene comic was triggered.
After the narrow passage, there was a new cave.
Meixia stepped into the cave with her oil lamp, bringing a ray of light to the dark, silent cave. Although some corners were still in shadow, she could roughly see the environment.
Just as she took two steps forward, there was a "crack" sound, as if she had crushed something. She looked down and saw that the ground was covered with bat droppings and the bones of unknown creatures, which were extremely fragile and turned into bone fragments when stepped on.
Just as she was looking down, a dark shadow suddenly darted out from the shadows of the cave, crawling on the ground, making a "hoarse" cry, and quickly crawled towards her!
Mu Jinxia was slightly startled: "Encountered a monster!"
Entering the battle interface, Meixia stood on the right side, her smooth white hair falling from her shoulders, holding a small twig-like staff in her hand.
On the left was an ugly monster with protruding eyeballs that were mostly white, giving it a strange and terrifying feeling. Its nostrils were upturned, and its limbs were squatting on the ground like a toad.
Earth Imp!
Mu Jinxia couldn't help but complain, "This Earth Imp is too ugly; it looks like someone stepped on its face."
