#44 - Moon Rescue
"Why would I want to go?" Johnny asked strangely. "I'm happy on Earth."
Dr. Watts: "Uh... you don't want to at all?"
Johnny: "Don't want to."
Dr. Watts: "Not even a little bit?"
Johnny: "...Don't want to?"
An awkward silence filled the air.
Dr. Watts, regaining his composure, began a comical speech, the background music speeding up to sound even more cheerful. He babbled on about the wonders of the moon, the honor of landing on the moon, frantically hinting at how great it would be to go to the moon, and how the Stellar Explorers League urgently needed talent—he was just short of directly asking Johnny to go to the moon.
The speech ended, the students dispersed, and Dr. Watts returned to wearing his white coat.
Dr. Rosalene: "Let's see how this went."
Dr. Watts disappeared for a few seconds and then returned: "Complete failure."
Dr. Rosalene: "..."
Dr. Watts was not discouraged: "Let's see what else we can do."
Next, the two doctors began jumping through Johnny's memories, causing all sorts of trouble.
When Johnny and his friend were talking about financial difficulties, Dr. Watts popped up: "Hey, but you might be able to afford a Moon Trip Lottery ticket!"
When Riva was diagnosed with her illness, and the doctor was telling Johnny about her condition, Dr. Watts squeezed in again: "Are you aware that the Stellar Explorers League has an advanced medical insurance plan? Absolutely true! Become an employee and benefit!"
When Johnny and Riva were horseback riding, he rode past them at lightning speed, turned around, and said: "'Heavenly' Horse Riding!"
At the wedding: "Ah, a wedding, congratulations. I wonder where you're going on your honey'moon'?"
After all the fuss, the night passed without any success.
Dr. Rosalene complained: "We're supposed to be authorities! We shouldn't be running around him like idiots!"
Dr. Watts: "...Maybe it's because of sleep deprivation. I would have brought coffee if I knew we were pulling an all-nighter."
Dr. Rosalene: "Wasting time like this isn't a solution. Let's rest first. Hopefully, Johnny can hold on until dawn."
Lin Fan was suddenly startled. He had been immersed in the joyful plot, and he almost forgot that Johnny's flame of life was dim and about to go out.
At the beginning, in front of the hospital bed, the treating physician had said that Johnny only had a day or two left.
Although he could guess from the style of the plot that this was a healing story and the ending should be satisfactory, he still couldn't help but feel anxious.
Could the old man fulfill his wish before the end of his life?
Dr. Watts: "Okay, I have to make a few calls."
Under the moonlight, Dr. Rosalene did not go to sleep but sat in Johnny's usual spot, looking at the sea. Perhaps because she was repeatedly frustrated and burdened with worries, she sat here to change her mood, or perhaps she wanted to put herself in the old man's shoes and analyze the reasons for the failure.
"This makes no sense... Johnny's wish to go to the moon was successfully transmitted, but he has no intention of going to the moon at all. Unless the secondary conditions of the desire have changed in the process..."
Dr. Rosalene pondered: "Riva played a crucial role in the whole process. If anything could cause this change, she is definitely the prime suspect... Riva, what did you do?"
Opening her eyes, it was already sunrise. The morning sun and elongated shadows floated on the orange-red sea. Two white seagulls skimmed past the lighthouse. The background music was peaceful, with a hint of sadness, as if depicting the withering of petals and the yellowing of leaves.
Dr. Rosalene got up from her chair, looked at the rising sun, and a sense of urgency struck her: "We don't have time... I really doubt if Watts can come up with any ideas."
Before entering the house, she looked back behind her: "I can smell the stench of the squirrel that Neil ran over from a long way away..."
Inside a room, Dr. Watts was on the phone: "Are you sure this is in his records? Then why was some of the information withheld from us?"
Dr. Rosalene asked: "Are you contacting headquarters?"
Dr. Watts: "Yes, I'll explain it to you later! Now, shush—"
After finishing the call, Dr. Watts said: "It seems our little Johnny has some hidden records from the past."
"Hidden records?"
"Specifically, medical records. When he was young, the doctor prescribed him a large dose of enhanced beta-blockers. Coincidentally, this medicine has some side effects on our magical memories."
A low, tense, and eerie background music sounded, as if some kind of chilling truth that one wanted to escape was being slowly revealed.
Lin Fan had a jolt, feeling a current flow from the soles of his feet to the top of his head, excitement and surprise intertwined: "The black abyss that appeared in Johnny's memory was caused by this drug? In other words, Johnny lost his childhood memories?"
The previous plots were mostly warm and plain, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but now a huge turning point was suddenly coming?
Dr. Watts: "In that lost memory, there is something strongly present. As long as we find this thing, we can awaken his memory from the inside."
The two doctors discussed it, but couldn't think of a clue. Lin Fan thought carefully: "Something in the memory? What is it?"
Dr. Watts seemed to want to go outside for some air, but he ran back shortly after, and Dr. Rosalene disliked him: "Is it annoying to go in and out?"
Dr. Watts shouted: "Roadkill animals! It stinks!"
"I know, didn't you run over it!" Dr. Rosalene originally thought this was a complaint, but suddenly thought of something, "Wait..."
Dr. Watts: "The last memory! That's where we were trapped!"
Lin Fan excitedly slapped the mouse: "That's right! I remember there was also a strong smell in that memory! Stimulating it with the same smell might activate that memory!"
Dr. Rosalene quickly collected this strong odor: "Ugh..."
In front of Johnny's bed, the two doctors quickly discussed the battle plan, and Dr. Rosalene explained to the attending physician: "When we reach the target point, we will send you a signal, and you will open the gas tank valve for three seconds."
Dr. Watts asked uncertainly: "Are you sure the bacteria have been sealed?"
Dr. Rosalene replied: "It has been completely sealed and filtered."
The attending physician looked at the weak Johnny on the bed, turned to face the two doctors, and looked into their eyes. Although it was difficult to draw details on the faces of the pixelated characters, Lin Fan imagined his serious expression: "You must know that Johnny's condition is deteriorating rapidly. This may be the last chance for you two..."
He hesitated: "No matter where you are or what you do, good luck."
In the slow and firm repetition, the very oppressive low electronic sound, Dr. Watts also sat in the chair and put on his helmet: "Luck is the last thing we need."
Although this was a very calm passage, Lin Fan actually read a sense of fighting to the death from it.
He suddenly had a feeling that he was not playing a pixel-style small game, but watching a blockbuster called "Moon Rescue" in the cinema.
With a soft "beep", the helmet lit up with a green light.
Then, the screen went dark.
Act Three.
"They bring light to lighthouses other than their own, and me."
