#49 - An unbreakable bond
The scene shifts back to Johnny's childhood, the gentle song intoxicating and heartbreaking. ♬♦ ♦♧
"Why my words"
Inside the room, Joey, looking bored, jumps off the double bed, seemingly calling Johnny out to play.
Johnny is focused on his textbook, studying diligently, unmoved by Joey's invitation.
Joey has "..." bubbles popping over his head, and goes out alone to kick a ball.
The scene lingers on Johnny studying seriously for a moment, then gradually fades to dark.
"Always fall short of what I mean"
His attention having been on Johnny and Joey, Lin Fan is a little unsure: "Was that a Star Explorer Alliance poster on the wall just now?"
The scene switches to the school gymnasium during a physical education class. Under the supervision of the gym teacher, Johnny and his buddy are doing push-ups on mats, surrounded by some blurry figures of classmates.
"What I feel, what I show"
Soon, his buddy can't do anymore. He collapses weakly on the mat, turns his head and stares in amazement at Johnny, who continues doing push-ups, one after another, seemingly tireless.
"There's a rift between"
Lin Fan can practically feel the sweat on Johnny's back and see his determined expression through the screen.
The town's carnival is still as lively as ever.
"He says, I have no way"
A small car drives leisurely along the road. Johnny has become a spectator at the carnival. He never seems to stop, always moving forward. ♦♦ ♦♦
"Like reading your heart"
Inside the room, Joey sits on the bed, watching Johnny carefully fold and seal the envelope, then leave the room.
"I just stand there, not knowing what to do"
Blue sky, white clouds, pleasant weather. Johnny arrives at a blue, square mailbox and drops the letter in.
"When this world is meaningless"
The sky is overcast with clouds, and raindrops fall like fine threads. At the same location, Johnny, holding a blue and white umbrella, drops the letter into the mailbox.
"All we can see is the moon"
The sun sets, the clouds in the sky are as beautiful as fire. Johnny comes to the mailbox again and drops in another letter.
Lin Fan guesses: "Is Johnny sending letters to Riva? Or..."
"Please fly away with me until the stars fade, and fade into the night sky"
The bookstore where Riva used to pick out books has become the location for Joey's book signing.
In this new memory, Joey has achieved his dream of becoming a writer.
Lin Fan can't help but think: "But what about Johnny? Can Johnny become an astronaut and go to the moon?"
"But I don't care, as long as you're with me, everything is fine"
The small car continues to drive on the road. On both sides of the road, from pitch black, gradually extend neat bricks and tall green trees—seemingly extended new memories, a new life.
The song gradually enters its finale, the sound is long and gentle: "As long as you are by my side, everything is fine—"
Finally, the car stops in front of the automatic sensor door of a large building. The grown-up Johnny gets out of the car, looks up, and the camera continuously rises, showing the entire magnificent appearance of the building.
The camera freezes on the "Star Explorer Alliance" logo at the top of the building, and the screen slowly fades to dark.
This scene seems to be inside the building. The walls are made of silver-gray material that looks full of technology. Pictures of the Earth and the Milky Way are also posted on the walls, with a distinct space style.
Dr. Watts looks surprised: "He really did it..."
Then, the two doctors stroll around this space center. At least on the surface, it looks quite decent.
Two parallel lines with a diagonal line in the middle form the automatic door; the astronaut training center and centrifuge; the spaceship launch center, rows of neat computers, and huge screens on the walls; rooms that resemble hospital wards, with various precise health monitoring instruments.
After taking a tour, the two arrive at a room of unknown purpose.
Dr. Watts says: "I don't know if this looks like a real space agency."
Dr. Rosalene responds: "Maybe not, after all, this is constructed from Johnny's imagination."
Dr. Watts walks to the window and looks outside: "This world is strange. You can hear birds chirping but can't see any birds."
Lin Fan has a deeper understanding of the memory modification technology mentioned in the game: "So these non-existent memories are automatically filled in through the old man's life experiences. I just saw a table that looks very similar to the table Johnny used to do his homework on when he was a child. The decorative potted plants here also seem to have been seen in the old man's house."
Just then, a blurry figure leads Johnny in, pointing to a figure busy in front of a computer and saying: "This is David, he is a space mission expert."
Johnny takes two steps forward: "Nice to meet you."
The figure in front of the computer nods slightly in response.
The two doctors discuss: "He may need several years of training before he can become a formal astronaut."
"Then let's skip to the final part. I hate missing the ending."
The memory space begins to flicker again. The two doctors look around. Perhaps time is really running out.
Just then, the figure walks towards the door: "This is our newly recruited member."
The familiar hair color, the familiar back, makes Lin Fan feel like a bolt of lightning has accurately struck the frontal lobe of his brain. He instantly gets goosebumps all over his arms, stares with wide eyes, and his thoughts seem to be paralyzed.
"Riva, is it? Welcome to here," the figure greets.
The gentle strumming of the acoustic guitar sounds just right. A strange emotion seems to flow in the air. The scene is stunning and touching, as if the softness of the heart is touched.
Riva steps forward and stands face to face with Johnny. She blinks her eyes.
Johnny looks into Riva's eyes and introduces himself: "Hello, my name is Johnny."
Lin Fan feels his eyes starting to water again. Some kind of liquid is planning to do a free-fall movement: "Riva!?"
"Phew." Dr. Rosalene seems to breathe a sigh of relief, "I almost thought—"
Dr. Watts rushes forward half a step emotionally, waving his arms, interrupting: "What the heck, didn't you remove her?"
"I told you, I just transferred her away," Dr. Rosalene says in a tongue-twisting sentence, "What she treats with her whole life still depends on 'her'."
Dr. Watts murmurs: "But this new world is based on public data and Johnny's memories. How do you ensure it will work?"
Although the words of the two doctors seem a bit complicated, Lin Fan's thinking is particularly clear at this time. He is completely immersed in the game's situation: "That is to say, because Johnny subconsciously firmly believes that Riva will break through all obstacles and meet him on the moon, no matter how many difficulties cannot sever the love and bond between them, so she is now appearing here?"
In this brand new memory, everything is developing from scratch. There are too many variables that may occur in the middle of the decade. Riva being able to appear here shows that Johnny's trust in her is extremely strong, believing that the Riva in the original memory would choose such an action.
Therefore, Dr. Rosalene would say that it depends on 'her'.
Some memories can't be deleted no matter what, and some promises can't be forgotten no matter what.
