Treasure Hunt all over the World
Chapter 360 Marching to the Ocean
The font written on the cover of the notebook is not beautiful, there is no artistry at all, but it can shake America!
Even Ye Tian, an outsider, couldn't help holding his breath when he read this passage, felt the soaring murderous aura, and could even hear the shrill howls and screams!
On the cover of the notebook it says:
"William Tecuse Sherman, 1864, March Notes, Southward Operation Plan!"
Just this line of words is enough to shake the entire American historians, making every scholar who studies the history of the American Civil War go crazy.
Sherman, a famous military strategist during the American Civil War, was second only to President Lincoln and General Grant in the Union Army. He was the most fierce and ruthless military general in American history.
During the Civil War, he rose to the command of the western theater of the United States, and was successful in the war in the spring of 1864. After the war, he served as the commander in chief of the United States Army and was awarded the rank of general.
He proposed the "March to the Sea" in 1864. During the march, he led the Wan Dajun to sweep the southern United States madly. No matter the cities or villages he passed, no grass was left, and they were completely burned to ashes!
"Marching to the sea" completely destroyed various military facilities of the Southern Army, severely hit the economic strength of the South, completely paralyzed the Southern economy, and laid the most solid foundation for the final victory of the Northern Army.
This kind of all-out war mode of destroying the opponent's war potential, industry, agriculture and economic system, and indiscriminately attacking military and civilian facilities began with Sherman and appeared for the first time in human history.
As a result, historians generally regard him as an early advocate of "total war" and the founder of overall warfare in the industrial age.
Ye Tian was not surprised to find this notebook in Chattanooga.
This is Sherman's base camp during the Civil War.
It is the place where he fought and garrisoned for a long time, and it is also the initial starting point of "Marching to the Sea".
On the top of Lukeout Mountain, not far from this courtyard market, is the Chattanooga Battle Memorial, which contains a large number of historical materials and related cultural relics introducing Sherman.
For Chattanooga people, although William Sherman was not born in this city, he is the pride and hero of this city!
There are many possible reasons why this notebook appeared here. Perhaps Sherman's orderly brought the notebook back to Chattanooga, or Sherman himself left the notebook here.
Of course, it may also be that collector's collection!
As to why it was hidden in the table leg, that is not known.
The desk was made in 1925, so maybe it has something to do with the 1929 economic crisis.
At that time, many people left their hometowns to seek a living. Perhaps in order to preserve this note, they remodeled the furniture and hid it!
But no matter what the reason is, this marching notebook is right in front of you, within reach, how could Ye Tian miss it? How can you miss it?
This is a treasure belonging to my buddies, whoever snatches it will give it to me urgently!
Compared with the previous top oil paintings, sculptures, etc., this is the real priceless treasure, which cannot be measured in dollars at all. It is a national treasure of the United States, enough to make countless people crazy about it!
Ye Tian forcibly suppressed his excitement, and his heartbeat gradually calmed down! ,
Now is not the time to be excited. When I take down these two pieces of furniture and this priceless marching notebook, I can cheer and celebrate.
With this marching notebook, Ye Tian would be more than happy to return to New York immediately to end the treasure hunting trip in Corridor 127. There is no better harvest than this!
He didn't take back the perspective right away, went to inquire with the stall owner, and took down the two pieces of furniture, but read the contents of the notes with great interest.
Although the notebook is rolled up and the text is reversed in many places, under the perspective, it can barely be read, but it is a bit dizzy!
Seeing the content on the first page of the notes, Ye Tian immediately felt a burst of murderous aura rushing towards his face.
At the top of the first page there is this line:
"The devastating, reckless, costly destruction of the South, which will destroy not only the enemy's military forces, but also the enemy's economic base and the will to fight of the enemy's population. - Ulysses Grant"
This is a very famous combat order in the history of the United States, and subsequent famous actions such as "March to the Sea" and "Burning Atlanta" all came from this.
The overall strategy formulated by Grant and Sherman has had a great impact on the history of the US military!
The shadow of this strategy can be seen in the subsequent "ideas of unconditional surrender, nuclear deterrence, and large-scale retaliation."
Beneath this famous military order is a passage from Sherman.
"After consulting and discussing with General Grant, as well as careful deduction by many staff members, we have jointly formulated the next phase of the combat plan, as follows:
The east and west war zones launched a coordinated attack to the south in three routes at the same time. The eastern front was the main direction of attack, with the main goal of annihilating Robert Lee's army.
In an uninterrupted series of battles, which consumed the Confederate forces and then captured Richmond, Butler's forces moved from east to west, heading straight for Richmond.
My army swept from west to southeast, went deep behind enemy lines to occupy Georgia, and went out to the Atlantic coast to make a breakthrough in the middle of the eastern part of the south."
Seeing this text, Ye Tian couldn't help but shudder.
Anyone who knows the history of the American Civil War will understand what this text represents!
It was a bloodbath and a scene of corpses strewn all over the field! It is a hellish nightmare that every southerner in the United States is unwilling to go to and dare not face!
When Sherman led an army of 100,000 into Georgia, the southern United States became a hell on earth!
The first was the Battle of Atlanta, which lasted four months from May to September. Sherman successfully captured the richest and most prosperous city in the south!
After occupying Atlanta, Sherman issued a proclamation to the local residents, requiring all militiamen to lay down their weapons and all citizens to leave the city.
He then ordered the Union Army to burn the entire city when it left Atlanta in November!
Thousands of old people and women refused to leave Atlanta in order to prevent the Union Army from burning Atlanta. They thought that as long as they were still in the city, the Union Army would not dare to set fire for their lives.
But, they are so naive!
When the Northern Army was about to set fire, the old men and women knelt on the ground, hugged the thighs of the Northern Army soldiers, wept loudly, and begged the soldiers to forgive their cities and homes for the sake of God.
The Union soldiers kicked them away without hesitation and started setting fire to the streets of the city.
Soon, the fire spread throughout the city, and the Northern Army soldiers quickly withdrew from the city, ignoring the old people and women in the city.
In front of the overwhelming fire, thousands of poor old people and women could only struggle and scream in despair, trample on each other, and run for their lives!
In the end, no one escaped from the flames, and all were burned to ashes!
The Northern Army guarding outside the city sternly warned the Atlanta residents who evacuated outside the city that anyone who tried to put out the fire would be shot to death. The fire burned for half a month.
At night, the churning fire rose more than 100 meters high, burning the entire sky as if it were daytime. The sky burned red by the fire could be seen 20 miles away from Atlanta.
During the day, huge clouds of smoke billowed up across the city blotted out the sky, making the 200 square miles around Atlanta feel like night.
Outside the city, countless terrified and desperate Atlanta residents could only watch helplessly as their city, homes and relatives were ruthlessly swallowed up by the flames.
The priests of Atlanta could only stand silently in front of the burning city, facing the fiery red sky in despair, crossing and praying incessantly, seeing off their own city and the souls who were buried in the flames.
Atlanta, once the most prosperous and most beautiful city in the South, was completely reduced to ruins after the catastrophe, and only one street survived.
This street has now become a historical symbol of Atlanta. It is called the underground street. The whole street is indeed underground and can only be reached by taking an elevator down.
In other words, the entire Atlanta today was built on top of the original ruins! The old urban area was completely destroyed and buried underground.
After setting fire to Atlanta, Sherman began his famous "March to the Sea."
He picked 20,000 elite soldiers, most of whom were black, and only carried 20 days of dry food. They set out from Atlanta, formed multiple columns, and marched in parallel.
In more than a month, the Sherman Army drove more than 460 kilometers, destroying plantations, towns, villages, factories, and enterprises in the south along the way, and almost crushed everything in the south!
This was a destructive march with little resistance. Sherman gave up all the transportation of supplies and marched lightly, relying on burning, killing and looting to replenish supplies along the way.
During the march, he uttered a famous saying that made all southerners in the United States shudder.
"We must remove and destroy all obstacles, kill everyone, take every inch of land, confiscate every property, in a word, destroy everything we see if we think it necessary!
I just want all Georgia to cry and howl, I just want all Georgia to be hell, I just want all Georgians, men, women, children, rich and poor, to feel the pain, and my legions will be destroyed Georgia then fast! "
Starting from Atlanta, the Sherman Corps burned, killed and looted all the way.
Wherever the Sherman Corps passed, it was as if a steamroller had run over it, and everything on the ground was completely destroyed.
As his army advanced rapidly, it completely destroyed all material facilities wherever it went, robbed the food and property of civilians, and killed civilians who resisted.
Fields were burned, villages bombed, wells blocked with lime, railroads smashed, town after town looted and expelled, town after town burned.
Sherman's troops have not yet arrived, and the flames spreading to the sky can be seen more than ten miles away!
When Sherman's army left, there was nothing but charred earth and a single smoking tree trunk left on the ground, and there was no one else or anything alive!
At this time, in a speech, he uttered the famous line that shocked all Americans.
"If people think I'm cruel and cruel, I tell them that war is war and it's not about trying to please people!
War is hell! If you want to stop this and want peace, you and your loved ones should lay down your arms and stop this war! "
In December 1864, with the cooperation of the Northern Navy, Sherman captured Savannah, Georgia. The eastern part of the Confederate territory was divided into two halves by Sherman's army.
So far, Sherman successfully completed the battle plan to advance to the ocean, from Chattanooga to Georgia, and then to the Atlantic coast, laying the foundation for the final victory over the South.
