Under the Red Dragon
#82 - Killing Night
The town finally descended into chaos. The nighttime clamor transformed into shouts and the sounds of weapons clashing in combat. These sounds alerted the adventurers and residents near the harbor, making them realize the danger had arrived.
The scene unfolding in the tavern was now playing out across every part of the town. These experienced adventurers weren't foolish enough to rush blindly into the mist. They shouted, gathering together to resist the invading sahuagin, using taverns, shops, and other buildings as defenses.
The residents on the streets also fled into their homes, closing the doors and using their houses as temporary shields against the monsters' attacks. Only a few adventurers and residents, who were too slow to escape or react, encountered the sahuagin in the mist-filled streets.
However, the adventurers in this town were all seasoned warriors. Each adventurer had their own companions, and they were not without the ability to fight back.
Only the extremely unlucky adventurers were quickly dealt with by the rushing sahuagin, like the sailors in the harbor.
Dragonborn wolf-kin Saha patrolled the streets on the opposite side of town from the harbor docks, leading his followers. Behind him, kobolds gripped sturdy long sticks capable of withstanding iron weapons, clad in simple clothes.
Centaurs, valued for their powerful combat abilities, generally wielded sharp iron hunting rifles and longbows, wearing tough animal hides and well-defended leather armor.
As for the more powerful dragonborn wolf-kin Saha, he trusted his sharp claws more than ordinary weapons, and his tough hide, enhanced by red dragon blood, was no worse than the leather armor worn by the centaur warriors.
Now, these dragonborn, with their high intelligence and greater strength than other followers, were already quite effective assistants to the dragon.
The dozen or so dragonborn followers brought out from the Carthage Empire's arena had been assigned by the dragon to be administrators and law enforcers in this, the most developed area within the dragon's territory.
Every night, a dragonborn had to lead other dragon followers to patrol the entire town, maintaining order and security.
However, in the past, the dragonborn only needed to comfortably stay in the security office built in the town, letting the kobolds and other tribal warriors patrol the streets. This was their privilege.
But tonight, the unusually thick fog made the werewolf Saha, with his keen intuition, feel a sense of unease. This came from the werewolf's innate animal senses, so he personally led his monsters to patrol the town.
For the dragonborn, the most important thing was not to betray the trust of the dragon and the creator. The dragonborn werewolf Saha did not want any mistakes to occur in the responsibility that the red dragon had given him.
The dragonborn werewolf Saha's beastly intuition came true. When Saha led his followers to the center of town, his keen hearing picked up the sounds of fighting and monster roars coming from the mist.
The dragonborn werewolf was shocked. He was not afraid of fighting, but he was afraid of failing to guard the territory for the red dragon, and these mists were now severely obscuring vision.
Even as powerful as a werewolf, the visible distance did not exceed ten meters, because this was not a simple, naturally formed mist, but a mist with magical power.
The dragonborn werewolf stopped and said to a kobold behind him in Draconic, "Go back to the security office and light the warning beacon. This matter must be made known to Lord Caron and the other dragons as soon as possible."
"Then gather the other dragon warriors in the security office to come and support us," the dragonborn werewolf pointed out a few more kobolds, saying, "Go and notify the residents who are still unaware of the situation. You must notify every household and let them take up their weapons and gather together."
"If there are too many monsters attacking the territory, these wooden houses won't be able to withstand them for long. It's best to come and join us. It's not clear where the monsters are distributed right now, and it's dangerous to escape into the forest."
The kobolds yipped a few words in Draconic and quickly ran back.
"As for you, follow me," the dragonborn werewolf specifically left the powerful centaur warriors with him. His crimson eyes, mutated by the red dragon blood, lit up, and his voice was full of anger and hatred.
"To dare attack the dragon's territory, before Lord Caron tears these monsters apart, I want to test the weight of these trash."
After saying that, the tall dragonborn werewolf took the lead and stepped into the thick mist, and the other centaur warriors also clenched their weapons and followed the werewolf's footsteps into the mist.
Huff.
After taking a few steps into the mist, two ugly monsters pounced out of the dense fog, their sharp tridents stabbing towards the dragonborn werewolf in front. These monsters always attacked enemies in pairs.
"So it's you mongrel fishmen, damn things," Dragonborn werewolf Saha's voice was cold, and his crimson eyes revealed a strong killing intent, he did not mean to dodge.
The dragonborn werewolf's strong arms bulged with knotted muscles, and the claws that were usually retracted under the long fur popped out. His strong thighs suddenly kicked the ground and darted forward, and the extremely sharp claws formed a diagonal cross shape and grabbed forward.
The trident stabbing towards his body was knocked away by the dragonborn werewolf's enormous power, and the sharp wolf claws slashed into the bodies of the two sahuagin lunging forward.
"Pfft,"
The two sahuagin's tough skin, along with their solid spine, was severed by the werewolf's claws. The bisected corpses fell to the ground, and gurgling blood and clumps of internal organs flowed from the severed bodies.
Awoo!
Stimulated by the blood, the dragonborn werewolf let out an excited howl and met the monsters pouring out of the fog.
The dragonborn werewolf, gradually entering a berserk state, did not care about the tridents stabbing at him. The thick long hair on his body and the tough skin, somewhat similar to that of a dragon, allowed him not to worry too much about defense. He waved his blood-stained claws and rushed forward.
"Kill that werewolf, the fishmen will exterminate everything!"
"Charge, kill that werewolf."
The sahuagin shouted in an abyssal language that the dragon kin couldn't understand, and one by one they gripped their tridents and charged towards the dragonborn werewolf and centaur warriors.
Under the sahuagin priestess's magic, their courage and strength had increased, and the blood they had bathed in earlier further stimulated the violence in their hearts. They were not at all afraid of the werewolf who looked particularly strong in front of them.
One after another, sahuagin charged at the dragonborn werewolf, and then were torn and shattered by the werewolf's sharp claws. Broken monster corpses and strange blood flowed all over the ground, and a thick bloody smell permeated the mist.
The centaur warriors behind him also naturally formed a triangular wedge formation behind the werewolf, holding up long hunting rifles to protect the dragonborn werewolf's flanks and back, and fought with the emerging sahuagin.
These sahuagin's tridents were not as long as the hunting rifles in the centaur warriors' hands. Often before they could attack the centaur warriors, they were pierced through the body by the long hunting rifles.
Moreover, these centaurs were strong and sturdy, all elite warriors from the tribe. After their powerful arms pierced through the sahuagin's body, they swung their arms and smashed away the other sahuagin who pounced on them.
For a time, the attacking team with the dragonborn werewolf as the arrowhead was unstoppable, stirring up a bloody storm in the monster group.
It was just that the visibility in the town shrouded in mist was insufficient, otherwise, with the centaurs' naturally powerful cavalry warriors and the dragonborn werewolf's strength, they would be even more unstoppable when they charged.
Even though these sahuagin were also quite strong, much more difficult to deal with than ordinary human warriors.
But there were too many monsters pouring out of the dense fog, continuously and fearlessly, and the dragonborn werewolf and centaur warriors also began to show some wounds.
Pfft.
The dragonborn werewolf's silver-white fur was already covered in blood. He led the team to charge back and forth, and finally scattered the monsters attacking the dragon kin nearby. His ears twitched, and he actively searched for traces of the enemy.
"Ah, help, these monsters are attacking!"
A sharp cry came from the mist, the sound was very close.
The door of a residence was broken open by the sahuagin, and these monsters were about to rush into the residence to kill the humans and plunder their treasures.
Bang, a corpse smashed towards the monsters gathered at the door, knocking them askew. The dragonborn werewolf arrived with the centaur warriors.
The werewolf, in a berserk state, was extremely brave. With a jump, he stepped on two fishmen lying on the ground, and with a wave of his claws, he chopped off the sahuagin's ugly heads.
The remaining centaur warriors also rushed over, the spears of their hunting rifles pierced through the monsters' bodies, and then with a flick downwards, they shook off the corpses.
The dragonborn werewolf stepped into the residence. Several adventurers holding weapons were standing in the hall, protecting the trembling ladies behind them. He had arrived just in time, and there were no casualties yet.
"This place can no longer stop the monsters' attacks. You can choose to escape backwards on your own or follow us," the werewolf Saha didn't say much, but left a sentence and turned to leave.
The several human warriors and ladies looked at each other. Although the dragonborn werewolf's berserk appearance was extremely terrifying, the long hair covered in blood, coupled with the crimson eyes and swollen muscles, looked more like a monster, they felt a sense of security.
"Follow him, this werewolf is a dragon kin."
So without much communication, they all chose to follow the dragonborn werewolf's steps.
