From Flower Vase to Film Emperor in Hollywood
#434 - Looking back
Applause roared and vibrated in the air.
Even standing outside the studio, one could clearly feel the surging and澎湃 heat, as if the whole world was spinning and boiling.
Jay Leno couldn't help but close his eyes, using his ears and heart to carefully feel this brilliant moment, memories rewinding all the way through the tunnel of time.
In 1975, he was twenty-five years old. He drove alone, embarking on a journey from New York across the entire North American continent to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a comedian.
In the blink of an eye, more than twenty years had passed. He thought those memories were very, very distant, and he might never recall them in his lifetime; but he didn't expect that those memories were still vivid, as if they happened yesterday. He could turn around and see his father and mother standing at the intersection, watching him leave.
His mother was a maid, and his father was an insurance salesman.
They were both ordinary and honest people, not even willing to dabble in business, but steadily and diligently created wealth with their own hands. In this way, they raised him and his brother, creating a world for them.
When his mother learned that he was going to Los Angeles to pursue a career, she did not object, but he would always remember her worried eyes, quietly watching him, with both pity and concern; however, the impetuous young man did not notice, wholeheartedly immersed in the joy of chasing the future.
His father and mother had no ambition, only hoping that their two sons could have a peaceful and happy life. It didn't matter if they were ordinary, it would be best if they could stay in New York, stay with them, and unite with other Italian immigrant families.
However, the high-spirited young man ultimately chose to travel far away.
When he first left, he was full of expectations and joy. The joy of embarking on the unknown made him eager to step on the gas, completely forgetting his father and mother, who had been standing at the street corner until the end, appearing in the rearview mirror; but he didn't expect that he would start to miss home not long after leaving New York.
Happiness and sadness, joy and bitterness, mixed emotions intertwined. He smiled and then suddenly realized that tears had wet his cheeks, and then he fell into deep loneliness, parked the car on the side of the road, and burst into tears on the steering wheel.
At this moment.
For some reason, the scene he inadvertently glanced at in the rearview mirror involuntarily appeared in Jay Leno's mind.
In fact, it was just a glance at the time, and he didn't care at all; but now, more than twenty years later, that picture is so clear.
Without warning, Jay Leno just stood there blankly.
"Jay?"
"Jay!"
It wasn't until the staff noticed Jay Leno standing in the corridor, and greeted him with a surprised expression, that he was awakened from his thoughts.
"Jay, are you okay?"
Jay Leno immediately realized that his expression had revealed the secret. Although there were no tears streaming down his face, the loss in his eyes and expression betrayed his true inner emotions.
This made Jay Leno a little flustered.
But Jay Leno controlled himself.
"No, I'm fine."
After a pause, Jay Leno looked at the staff member.
"It's a really moving performance, isn't it?"
The staff member followed Jay Leno's line of sight and looked towards the studio. "Of course, a surprise, an absolute surprise. I remember when we were planning this topic, everyone was worried that it might fail; but now it seems that they have far exceeded expectations."
The smile on the corner of Jay Leno's mouth also rose slightly.
He needed some private time to quietly digest the surging and boiling emotions.
After taking only two steps, Jay Leno stopped, turned to look at the staff member, "By the way, after the recording is over, arrange a meet-and-greet time for the audience."
Generally speaking, after a talk show recording, the program team often arranges time to give back to the audience, with the guests or Jay Leno interacting with the audience, with brief handshakes and hugs to thank the audience for their support.
However, "The Tonight Show" is relatively less frequent. This kind of segment is more suitable for morning talk shows, where the audience needs this kind of interaction more. Most of the audience for late-night talk shows are tired workers, and even handshakes and hugs are a form of socializing.
Occasionally, very, very occasionally, "The Tonight Show" will arrange such a segment.
The staff member was stunned, "Are you sure?"
The smile on the corner of Jay Leno's mouth bloomed, "Trust me, the audience will be grateful."
Jay Leno knew the other party's hesitation:
Is this really necessary?
Miles, Connor, and Lily are basically ordinary people, without a mysterious aura or celebrity style. They are completely street performers that can be seen everywhere, and Connor is even a supermarket cashier. They have no attraction to the late-night show audience.
As for Anson, the situation may be slightly better, but as of now, Anson is just a new actor. Jay Leno believes that many female audience members like Anson, but most of the audience who came to the studio today are office workers, male.
Logically speaking, the recording should end when it ends, and there is really no need to arrange extra interaction.
Jay Leno was slightly different.
He originally thought so too, but recalling his experience and feelings just now, he suddenly realized that the situation might be slightly different from what he expected.
Those office workers, like him, needed such comfort for their tired and困顿 souls, a little bit of venting and release, a little bit of warmth and care.
Even if Miles and the others are just ordinary people, it doesn't matter, music is the best bridge.
Facts have proved that Jay Leno was right.
Originally, the recording had ended, and the audience on the scene obediently stood in place, waiting for the program team to arrange their departure. Their eyes never left Anson and others, and their eyes revealed a kind of resonance and desire.
Then, when the program team announced the arrangement for a handshake and hug session, the studio immediately became noisy, and even low cheers could be heard.
One, two, three, four, five, six, all started to line up.
After a little chaos, the scene was brought under control, and more than two-thirds of the audience lined up, like a long dragon winding around the studio, unable to suppress their澎湃 mood and雀跃 feelings, step by step towards the confused and懵懵懂懂 band members.
The funniest thing was that a small portion of the program staff also obediently followed the queue, hoping to get close to the band members.
Obviously, the band members didn't know what was going on:
This item was not in the plan.
Miles and the others all looked at Anson, but unfortunately, Anson had no answer this time, just spreading his hands to indicate, "Just listen to the program team's arrangements."
Connor was a little nervous and a little apprehensive. He had seen long queues, but they were all people checking out at the supermarket. The team in front of him looked really familiar. For a brief moment, Connor seemed to be back in Kansas City, on a very busy Saturday afternoon.
Is this normal?
