#48 - Peach Fox Appraises Treasures
“A perfect date?”
Yarrow's first thought was, what would even qualify as perfect?
He glanced at the peach fox beside him, who was brimming with excitement.
“I guess it means making her feel satisfied and happy?”
With this thought in mind, they entered the main city.
It was Peach Fox's first time in the royal city, and she was full of curiosity, her eyes wide as she looked around. The prosperity and novelties here were unlike anything she had seen in the small towns she had lived in before. She kept asking Yarrow questions along the way.
“Yarrow, why are those people holding brooms?”
“Those are their transportation. Riding brooms is considered a kind of fashion.”
“Oh, oh, just like our sword flight.”
“Yarrow, is that group of people performing some kind of ritual?”
“Those are street performers doing magic tricks. Although there's magic, some people are still interested in stage magic.”
“Yarrow, look, that chimpanzee is even wearing clothes.”
“Shh! That's not a chimpanzee, that person is just a bit dark-skinned!”
The other person glanced over with a displeased look, and Yarrow quickly pulled her away.
After walking for a short while, Peach Fox's nose twitched: “There's a sweet smell.”
Yarrow looked around and saw an ice cream stand by the side of the road.
“That's ice cream, would you like to try some?”
“Ice cream? Is it like sherbet? Back home, only the inner courtyard disciples of the Daoist temple have ever eaten it.”
Seeing the expectant look in Peach Fox's eyes, Yarrow took her to the stall and ordered a double-scoop ice cream.
When the red and white ice cream was handed over, Peach Fox released Yarrow's hand for the first time, taking it with both hands.
She stuck out her pink little tongue and took a lick, then closed her eyes as if she had been stung, her fox ears twitching.
“So cold!”
“I told you it was ice cream.”
Perhaps all girls like this kind of sweet food. The four girls at home really have similar preferences.
Peach Fox took two licks, looked at Yarrow, and handed the ice cream over.
“Yarrow, do you want to eat some?”
“I'm okay,”
Yarrow really didn't like sweet things.
On the way to the alchemy workshop, Peach Fox finished the double-scoop ice cream.
“No problem, it can be delivered tomorrow.” Yarrow signed his name on the order and pushed it to White, who was behind the counter.
White was leaning on the counter with one hand, staring at him with a somewhat resentful look.
“Hey, Yarrow, have you been attracting some romantic troubles lately? How come the girls you bring back are always different?”
Peach Fox was on the other side of the workshop, looking around the material shelves for the warding materials she wanted.
“And they're all beastkin girls. Have you climbed up to some big beastkin family? If so, can you introduce me to a beastkin milf? Preferably a cat person, with at least a D cup, and it would be even better if she was a sadist.”
“You're really not greedy. I can't find you a sadist cat lady, but if you're willing to settle, I can beat you up to give you a thrill,” Yarrow said.
“Alright, bro, stop being mysterious, and tell me the truth. Have you really gotten involved with some big family?”
“Would you believe me if I said I just stumbled upon them while walking?” Yarrow said.
“You're really not a good friend. Next time, you won't get any discounts.” White said indignantly.
“Yarrow, I'll take these!”
Peach Fox then brought some small glass bottles filled with alchemical materials, including red scale armor stone powder, pine oil, deep sleep grass ash, and yellow cloud flower juice.
“I plan to make a lucky charm to ward off evil, and I've found some substitutes based on my past memories.”
Yarrow looked at the materials one by one. He didn't know much about the Daoist magical artifacts, but he recognized that the red scale armor stone powder should be a substitute for cinnabar.
Although he felt that using materials and coins from another world to make a lucky charm was a bit unreliable.
After buying the things Peach Fox needed, they left the alchemy workshop.
“Well, next, I'm still short of copper coins, preferably ancient coins,” Peach Fox said.
“If it's ancient coins, then we can only go to the antique market,” Yarrow thought.
People in this other world also have the habit of collecting antiques. In the capital, Alexsted, there is also a large antique shop called “Liu Jin Antique Exchange,” which collects old objects ranging from a few decades to thousands of years old.
Yarrow took Peach Fox here.
The exchange was very large, divided into two floors. The upper floor was an exhibition area for some precious cultural relics, while the lower floor was a more ordinary trading area. There were also several appraisers doing cultural relic appraisals.
Coins are considered very common antiques. On the first floor, there was a row of counters with many ancient coins scattered inside, priced from a few Daka to more than ten gold Lang.
Peach Fox was carefully searching through them.
“How about this one?”
Yarrow picked up a copper coin with a pretty good design. He couldn't tell which era it was from. It had a white thistle flower printed on it, and a lion's head on the back.
“No, Yarrow, that coin is a modern imitation, it's useless,” Peach Fox shook her head and said.
Yarrow looked at her in surprise: “You can tell? Oh, right, you can appraise treasures.”
He suddenly remembered that Peach Fox could also appraise treasures from another world, but he didn't expect her to be able to tell the year.
“This is a special ability of our family, to see the information of some things, so no treasure can escape my eyes.” Peach Fox blinked her purple eyes at him.
“So convenient? Can you see the information of people or creatures?” Yarrow asked in surprise.
“Hmm, no, I can only see the information of objects, and they have to be valuable. Also, I have a special sense of smell for real treasures. Real good things will attract me to find them.”
As she spoke, Peach Fox picked up a coin with a crown seal from a pile of coins and waved it at Yarrow triumphantly.
This made Yarrow's mind start to work. Since that's the case, they happen to be at the antique exchange, so let Peach Fox take a look around. Maybe they can find a big bargain like last time?
“Peach Fox, take a look around here, are there any treasures that are obviously good but not known by people?” Yarrow asked her in a low voice.
This time, Peach Fox shook her head: “Currently, I haven't seen any. After all, in this kind of formal store, there are professional appraisers. It's still a bit difficult to find a bargain.”
“I guess so...” Yarrow was a little disappointed, and wondered if he should take Peach Fox to the night market to take a look in the evening.
Taking the few copper coins she had chosen, they went to the counter to pay. While they were paying, at a counter next to them, a bald uncle was chattering endlessly. The appraiser at the opposite counter was carefully examining a finely crafted long sword.
“This is the sword that Emperor Sosa carried when he personally led the troops in the Jinshi battle! Look at the inscriptions on the blade, they were personally engraved by Emperor Sosa! This is a real, obvious treasure with more than a thousand years of history!”
The appraiser, wearing white gloves, carefully observed the sword with a cylindrical magnifying glass. She raised her head and said hesitantly: “It should be, no problem, the thing is indeed old, but...”
“Then give me the certificate, don't waste my time, I have to send it to the auction house this afternoon!” the uncle said anxiously.
The appraiser considered for a moment, then got up to get the signing documents for the appraisal report.
“That sword is new.”
At this moment, Peach Fox suddenly pointed at the sword and said loudly.
Both of their gazes turned over, and even Yarrow was caught off guard.
“What did you say?” The uncle glared over.
“I said your sword is new, and it's still a replica from a few years ago. Although the imitation is very realistic, it's not an old object.” Peach Fox said.
The uncle sized her up, and seeing her outstanding appearance and beast ears, he felt that she was a young lady from some beastkin family, and his tone softened slightly:
“This lady, don't think that just because you've read a few more books, you can comment casually. This sword of mine is a treasure that even the archaeological master Feli of the royal capital said was good at a glance! What do you young girls know?”
“But it's new,” Peach Fox stepped forward and pointed to the position of the sword hilt with one finger:
“Look, if it really is Emperor Sosa's saber, then it should have been made by his royal craftsman, Kaisworth. This craftsman master would not use a duck-billed knife for carving by habit, but there are obvious carving marks of this type of tool on this sword.”
As soon as these words came out, the appraiser suddenly seemed to remember something, and hurriedly looked at it again with a cylindrical mirror.
“It seems to be,” she said in surprise, looking at Peach Fox with a different look.
“Wait, your ability can even see the carving habits of a craftsman from a thousand years ago?” Yarrow asked quietly on the side in disbelief.
“Hmph, am I amazing?” Peach Fox gave him a proud look.
“Bullshit! Look at the engraved inscriptions! What else could this workmanship be from other than the Sosa Emperor's period?” the uncle said angrily.
“Oh, that, indeed the inscriptions are very realistically imitated, but there are...”
Peach Fox just wanted to continue explaining, but the uncle interrupted her directly.
“Impossible! This is an heirloom from my family! I've been collecting it for more than a hundred years, how dare you say it's new?”
“It couldn't be more than a hundred years, at most it's been ten years, which is also considered new. As far as I can see, the imitation should have used...” Peach Fox just wanted to say, but was interrupted again.
“I think you're the new one! This sword of mine has been seen by Master Feli! He told me to come! How dare you question the master?”
“I'm not questioning, it's just that there's really a problem with it, listen to me first...”
“Look at this pattern, look at this polishing, you say it's new?”
“New.”
“Look at this rust, look at this patina...”
“New, brand new.”
“You look at...”
“New.”
“You...”
“Absolutely new.”
“I...you this...”
“Undisputedly new.”
