#70 - Judgement of the Wolf Fenrir (Part 1)
That day, Loki was with his old flame, the giantess Angrboða, tenderly watching his eldest son, Fenrir.
This is also the terror of incomplete understanding.
These two frost giants didn't think there was anything wrong with two giants giving birth to a wolf.
Just then, Loki suddenly received a summons from the Valkyrie Randgrid.
“By order of the King of Gods, please bring your child Fenrir to the Golden Palace immediately.”
“Huh? Does His Majesty need me for something?” Loki wondered.
So many gods and giants have offspring, but Thorns doesn't pay attention to them one by one. Those with good relationships just send a Valkyrie with gifts.
The Valkyrie in front of him came empty-handed, and the situation didn't look like a celebration.
But a bad thing… it didn't seem like it either.
Only one Valkyrie came, and His Majesty Thorns didn't send his most trusted son Thor to arrest anyone.
Loki didn't know that this was Thorns' intention.
From beginning to end, Thorns gave the gods and giants the impression of being just and fair.
When Loki thought of the last time he gambled with the dwarves, even falsely conveying the holy decree, Thorns didn't take his life, and the unease in his heart was greatly reduced.
He even turned around and comforted his lover Angrboða: "It's okay, although I don't like King Thorns very much, he has always been fair and just. The last time I caused so much trouble, he didn't punish me. I'll take Fenrir and be back soon."
Loki didn't know that he was stepping into a trap called 'trust'.
Over the years, Thorns had never touched Loki, and even withstood the accusations of the gods, and was quite tolerant of Loki's various antics. When Loki made a big mess, he would at most punish him a little.
This made Loki still quite admire Thorns.
When Loki brought his little wolf cub to the Golden Palace, Loki sensitively noticed that the atmosphere was not right.
Gods and giants alike, there were too many people present today.
Even Vili, who led the vassal gods, and the former Vanir Queen Nerthus were also present.
Feeling the almost palpable malice in the air, the young Fenrir immediately bared his teeth and growled at all the beings around him, his sharp claws lightly scraping the hall, leaving terrifying claw marks.
This scene deepened the gods' and giants' bad impression of Fenrir.
They whispered to each other:
“What His Majesty Thorns just said must be true!”
“Vicious wolf cub!”
“Kill it.”
The giants' private chats never fell below 80 decibels. This blatant killing intent made the blood drain from Loki's face.
Loki already regretted it: Why did I obediently bring Fenrir here?
Want to run now?
Too late!
Thor and Frey, Thorns' two top henchmen, seemed to have received orders long ago, and their eyes were locked on Loki from the moment he entered the hall.
The god of war Tyr was also staring at Fenrir, which made the magic wolf's fur stand on end.
He looked around and found that every being here seemed to be able to easily crush him. This made him extremely uneasy.
Although Fenrir was ferocious, he was extremely filial to Loki.
Under this clear threat, Fenrir growled and tried to shrink his small body between Loki's legs.
At this time, Fenrir was too small, weighing only about 60 pounds, and his shoulder height was only a little over half a meter. In the eyes of the Aesir gods, who were easily five or six meters tall, and the giants, who were more than ten meters tall, he really just looked like a puppy.
In this situation, Loki couldn't sit still and wait for death. He forced himself to cheer up and ordered Fenrir in a low voice: “Don't roar, listen to me, or you're dead.”
Still that sentence, although Fenrir was extremely ferocious by nature, he was willing to listen to Loki. So Fenrir tucked his tail between his legs, curled up his body, made himself look smaller and more harmless, and obediently followed Loki to the steps of Thorns' throne.
Loki took Fenrir and saluted Thorns together.
To be precise, he knelt down on one knee and pressed Fenrir's head with his left hand to make him lower his head.
Fenrir resisted fiercely, but as a young wolf, he could not resist the power of an adult frost giant. What's more, that was his father.
Loki's acting talent was imprinted in his bones: “Your Majesty, I brought Fenrir here at your command. Out of loyalty to Your Majesty, I brought him here. But why is the hall filled with distrust and intimidation towards my son?”
Thorns looked at Loki, and a sense of pathetic and sighing fate welled up in his heart.
If only Loki had used his intelligence and talent in the right way, the Aesir might have been even more prosperous.
Unfortunately, tinkering with those artifacts was Loki's last moment of glory.
Thorns lowered his eyelids, as if closing his eyes to rest, and after several breaths, he slowly raised his eyelids: “Loki, do you still remember Sleipnir's offspring?”
The muscles on Loki's face had a subtle stiffness: “Of course, they are very famous in the Aesir. The gods are proud to have one of his offspring.”
“Then do you know how Sleipnir's offspring came to be?”
“I, I'm not too sure.” At this time, Loki had become the god of lies, and he didn't blush or skip a beat when he lied.
“Okay, let's just say it split out.” Thorns' gaze towards Loki carried a sense of piercing that made Loki extremely uneasy. Loki felt that his every little thought, even the next sentence, the sentence after that, and even all his sophistry had been calculated by Thorns.
This feeling of being crushed in terms of divine power, insight, and intelligence made Loki feel as if a thousand-pound stone was pressing on his chest, making it difficult to breathe.
Loki had never felt such strong pressure from this magnificent and brilliant Golden Palace as he did now.
“What does Your Majesty want to say?” Loki stubbornly continued to pretend to be stupid.
“What I want to say is—recently, many beasts have begun to become chaotic.” Thorns gestured, and the door of the side hall opened in response.
Several Valkyries carefully dragged in a huge cage with wheels.
Even though many gods and giants had seen it once, they still felt that the thing was disgusting and terrifying when they saw it again.
Theoretically, it was a horse.
But it had seven legs, two heads, and eight mouths, and its body was more like the trunks of two horses connected together.
The most terrifying thing was that this thing was actually alive.
As they dragged it out, it tried to gnaw on the branches of the cage with several of its mouths. Fortunately, the iron branches of the cage were made by dwarven craftsmen and covered with Runic symbols and Runas spells, making them impossible to be easily destroyed.
Finally, Thorns revealed his true colors and stated his conclusion, or rather, his verdict.
“Loki! I never want to predict the future of a child with the greatest malice. But the world of Jötunheimr is surrounded by chaos, and there are flaws in the World Tree's purification of chaos. Under these circumstances, the birth of certain individuals will bring the most terrible destruction to the world, and even destroy the entire Aesir. Do you understand what I mean?”
