#20 - Chapter 20: The Wrong Spring (Part 3)

The Knight of the Laughing Tree, after only a slight adjustment, challenged another hayfork knight from House Haigh. His actions proved his valor, and the crowds cheered him even more; some young women even threw their undergarments to him.

The tournament below continued, but King Aerys II Targaryen, on the platform above, wore a displeased expression. He summoned his master of whisperers, Varys, to his side and said with some dissatisfaction, "Spider, who do you think this Knight of the Laughing Tree is?"

Varys said respectfully, "Your Grace, you put me in a difficult position. However, the Knight of the Laughing Tree's skill suggests he is not from an ordinary family."

Aerys II snorted coldly, "Humph, there are only a few great houses in Westeros. How could it be such a coincidence? Do you think this fellow could be Jaime Lannister?"

Varys was taken aback, having witnessed the king's peculiar thought processes. "I am sorry, Your Grace. I do not know if it is Ser Jaime. He should be on his way to King's Landing as you commanded."

Aerys II said, "I do not trust these golden-haired Lannisters. Jaime is likely to disobey my orders, appearing to go to King's Landing while secretly returning to participate in the tourney. Varys, investigate this thoroughly for me."

Varys replied, "As you command, Your Grace. I will see to it immediately."

Liu Yuan faced the ferocious beast, not daring to relax in the slightest. The large cat seemed wary of the crossbow in Liu Yuan's hands but was unwilling to give up its prey. Liu Yuan knew there were still four bolts in the quiver, and reloading would only take four seconds. But with this big fellow's speed, it would definitely not give him that time.

"Swish!" Liu Yuan tentatively fired a bolt, only to see the black cat swat it away with its paw. His face turned bitter. Damn felines, their reflexes are too fast! Without hesitation, Liu Yuan quickly nocked and fired, adding two more bolts as quickly as possible. The cat swatted away one bolt, but the second one struck its front paw.

"Aowu!" With a mournful cry, the cat bit the shaft of the bolt and forcefully pulled it out. It then licked the blood from the wound, its eyes showing deep wariness.

Liu Yuan sensed an opportunity. Instead of retreating, he took a few steps forward and fired another bolt at the cat. This unexpected action startled the cat, causing it to leap backward. Seeing the bolt fly toward it, it darted aside and retreated to a safe distance.

Taking advantage of this opportunity, Liu Yuan swapped quivers. "Swish, swish, swish!" Three more bolts flew. This time, however, the cat was prepared, seeing that the two-legged creature could launch such spikes. It roared unwillingly, then turned and fled.

Liu Yuan fired a few more bolts after it, driving it away. This action indeed solidified the cat's determination to leave. With several leaps, it disappeared from Liu Yuan's sight.

Only then did he relax. The stabbing pain in his temples and brow had vanished. He cursed inwardly, "Damn it!" Then, cautiously, he quickly left the area and soon returned to the lakeside. Finding his boat, he quickly rowed away from the shore. Only then did he truly feel safe. He looked back at the island in the middle of the lake and vowed, "Fine! This feud is settled. Black cat, you just wait. One day, I will skin you alive!"

He wasn't sure if it was his imagination, but he saw a figure in the tall weirwood tree, a small figure that seemed to be green. Looking closer, it seemed like nothing was there at all.

In the afternoon, the Knight of the Laughing Tree challenged the twin Frey knight. By this point, the Knight of the Laughing Tree was actually pushing his body to its limits. Jousting was a physically demanding activity, and a single match often lasted several rounds. Even if a fully armored knight could endure, his warhorse would be exhausted!

By the seventh round, the Knight of the Laughing Tree was already at a disadvantage. He made a risky move. As the twin knight's lance thrust toward him, he did not dodge but instead braced his shield against his abdomen, cleverly deflecting the lance's trajectory so that it glanced off his body. At the same time, his lance struck the twin knight in the abdomen.

In this mutually destructive maneuver, both contestants were thrown from their horses by the powerful impact. At this critical moment, the Knight of the Laughing Tree reached out, abandoning his weapon and shield. He braced his hands against the horse's rump and, with an unbelievable maneuver, flipped back into the saddle.

He raised his right arm and rode past, claiming the final victory. He also earned the crowd's thunderous applause. No one had ever seen such amazing horsemanship. Everyone was shouting for him, "Victory! Victory!"

The three knights he had defeated came to negotiate with him, intending to ransom their horses and equipment. The Knight of the Laughing Tree said, "I was not originally planning to return your equipment because I saw your squires bullying the weak. If you can teach your squires to understand honor, I will return your equipment!" His voice, transmitted through his helmet, sounded hoarse and loud. Therefore, the spectators cheered enthusiastically for the mysterious Knight of the Laughing Tree.

This also put the three knights in a difficult position. In the end, the knights publicly flogged their three squires. They severely punished their squires, which, to some extent, restored their reputation.

In fact, they were secretly relieved that they could redeem their equipment so easily. Each set was worth about a dozen gold dragons! This was not a small sum. The Knight of the Laughing Tree's request allowed them to save both face and fortune.

At the same time, the Knight of the Laughing Tree also attracted the attention of others. Robert Baratheon loudly told his friends, "Ricard Lonmouth, don't compete with me. This Knight of the Laughing Tree is mine. I swear, tomorrow I will personally crack open his visor."

On the other side, Prince Rhaegar had also defeated Jon Arryn, which was the last match of the day, but his limelight had been stolen by the Knight of the Laughing Tree. King Aerys II Targaryen's paranoia grew stronger and stronger. "Spider, I am increasingly convinced that the man is the little lion from the Lannister house. Notify everyone that the mysterious knight is my enemy."

Prince Rhaegar had just returned and overheard their conversation. He quickly stepped forward to stop them. "Father, please wait. I don't think this is appropriate. The mysterious knight's actions have won him popular support. If the people outside know, it may cause dissatisfaction, which will damage your reputation."

Aerys II thought about it and agreed. "Well, then, but we definitely cannot let him off so easily. Spider, announce that whoever can unmask the Knight of the Laughing Tree will receive my personal audience and reward. Heh heh... If he really is the little lion from the Lannister house, I will reveal his treacherous face in front of the world."
