#24 - Chapter 24: Attacked on the Road
Seven Gods above! What did Prince Rhaegar do? This was the silent cry in everyone's heart.
“You…” Brandon Stark, standing beside Lyanna, suppressed his anger, intending to question Prince Rhaegar on the spot. Eddard Stark calmly held his brother back, but there was no joy in his expression. This was his own sister, and his good friend's betrothed.
At that moment, Robert was chatting with Ian Hunter and Jon Arryn. Robert's expression was also unpleasant. Having inherited the title of Lord of Storm's End, he couldn't easily lose his temper. He could only laugh and say, "I think Prince Rhaegar is merely giving Lyanna the praise she deserves!" But only Robert's friends knew him well enough to understand that from this moment on, Robert had a grudge against Rhaegar.
Barristan regretted that he hadn't defeated Prince Rhaegar in the jousting finals. Otherwise, he could have crowned his beloved Ashara Dayne with the Queen of Love and Beauty, thus preventing Rhaegar from acting recklessly.
The jousting tournament, as the highlight of the event, had ended. Next were other group combats, archery, axe throwing, horse racing, and single combat. The requirements for these events were not as high, and many commoners, mercenaries, and even the lord's soldiers could participate.
Of course, this also meant they were less regulated. Most participants lacked complete protective gear, and the majority of injuries and deaths occurred during this stage. It was common to see knights going on rampages in the melee, causing rivers of blood. Of course, there were also upsets, mostly involving mercenary knights or free riders.
The entire tournament lasted for ten days, and winners were determined for all events. Rhaegar, as the champion of the jousting tournament, had several members of the Kingsguard also taking the top spots. Liu Yuan secretly praised, "Brilliant!" The prize money was originally sponsored by Rhaegar, and now the majority of it returned to his own hands. He not only gained popular support and increased his reputation but also won honor, and in the end, didn't spend much money!
Robert won the team competition, perhaps fueled by suppressed anger! During the competition, he displayed his ferocious side, with more than twenty people dying under his warhammer.
King Aerys departed for King's Landing the day after the jousting tournament ended, as his health did not permit him to stay away for long. Moreover, there was a major issue in King's Landing that needed his attention: Grand Maester Tywin Lannister had simply quit his job.
Aerys II had angered Tywin Lannister by making Jaime a member of the Kingsguard. Jaime was no ordinary noble; he was the future heir to House Lannister. The Kingsguard was an elite guard created by the Targaryen family to protect the royal bloodline, composed of seven of the most skilled knights, who swore to serve for life until death, even in old age, physical disability, or mental breakdown.
Furthermore, the Kingsguard held no lands, took no wives, and had no children, dedicating their lives solely to their monarch. Because they swore an oath not to marry, any children they had would be bastards. Aerys II's actions completely severed his friendship with Tywin Lannister. In fact, Tywin Lannister, who had managed the Seven Kingdoms for over twenty years, threw down the Hand of the King's badge in anger and returned to Casterly Rock with his daughter Cersei. Currently, the Small Council at the Red Keep had been suspended for several days, and no one was handling state affairs.
Therefore, King Aerys, along with some accompanying nobles, returned to King's Landing early, needing to select a new Hand of the King. Soon after, Prince Rhaegar also received a royal decree ordering him to return to King's Landing. This tourney at Harrenhal, on the surface, was considered a complete success, but Aerys II had originally intended to use this opportunity to regain the love of the people and nobles.
However, the result was the opposite. It was during this tournament that the lords of the Seven Kingdoms, who had only heard of the Mad King's actions, now witnessed the king's madness and the decline of the Targaryen dynasty firsthand. The resignation of Hand of the King Tywin Lannister further weakened the royal authority, and from that moment on, they had the courage to resist the Iron Throne.
Prince Rhaegar, who seemed to have won all the glory, was seen by some lords as acting recklessly. He was already married, and Princess Elia had borne him two children. Lyanna Stark was not only the daughter of the Lord of the North but also the betrothed of Robert, Lord of Storm's End. Rhaegar's actions were a kind of trampling of the lords' rights by royal power. Even a high-ranking duke could be humiliated, let alone the lesser lords. Of course, perspectives differed depending on one's position.
Two days passed, and the ten-day tourney at Harrenhal officially ended. House Celtigar, which had helped out, stayed until the very end, waiting for all the guests to leave. Lord Adrian Celtigar also bid farewell to Lord Whent. This time, House Celtigar had also gained some honor, after all, they had many participants! They had also strengthened their relationships with the royal family and other lords. Overall, Adrian was satisfied.
Lord Whent specially hosted a banquet to exclusively entertain everyone from House Celtigar, and even servants like Liu Yuan were allowed to attend. At the banquet, Liu Yuan saw the Earl's family, the little girl Lyanna Celtigar, and Becot Celtigar. It seemed they were having a good time in Harrenhal, as they had all gained weight.
The underage servants flocked around Becot, except for Liu Yuan, mainly because he was a bit young, usually worked in the smithy, and couldn't really hang out with those ten-year-olds.
Becot, however, was quite interested in him, because there were rumors on Crab Island that Liu Yuan was the Earl's bastard son. In Westeros, noble families generally didn't reject bastards, as they often became capable assistants to the heirs. Due to their bloodline, noble offspring, even bastards, usually had a higher ceiling than commoners. So their fathers often sponsored and nurtured them. Currently, Adrian Celtigar only had two sons, and although he didn't seem to care on the surface, he had been secretly watching Liu Yuan's growth. Old Parker taking him as a blacksmith's apprentice was also at the lord's suggestion.
Becot often took the initiative to say a few words to Liu Yuan, without any disdain for bastards. He could also tell that this young lord was a good person, but it was hard to get close to him.
But before she could be happy for long, Rhaegar bypassed Miss Whent, and her smile froze.
Finally, Rhaegar stopped in front of the Stark family and gently placed the flower crown on Lyanna's lap! The smiles of everyone in the audience froze.
