#25 - Chapter 25: Lure the Tiger Away from the Mountain

The next morning, the Cetigar family's party left Herunburg. The convoy quickly split into two groups, one part consisting of vassals and landed knights from the Claw Peninsula who needed to return to their territories to handle their affairs.

The remaining group was Cetigar's main force. The Countess had a whim to visit King's Landing, and Count Adrian agreed. They detoured to King's Landing, planning to stay there for a while before taking a ship from the harbor outside the River Gate back to Crab Island.

Most lords wouldn't travel with so many people, as it's a considerable expense, but Count Adrian was wealthy! The Countess rarely left the island, so he indulged her whim. Besides, the two children also enjoyed sightseeing along the way, often deviating from the main road.

That afternoon, the Cetigar convoy camped in the hills not far from Sow's Horn. A winding stream flowed through the area, and the hills behind were covered in dense forest. With water and wood readily available, it was a good campsite.

However, Liu Yuan felt a deep sense of unease. Having experienced battlefields, he understood the signal of danger. He frowned, constantly surveying the surrounding terrain. He was certain that someone was lying in ambush within those forests, targeting their camp.

But Liu Yuan couldn't tell the others, so he silently prepared himself. He hid behind the carriage, checking his weapons, cocking the crossbow, and ensuring all the arrow quivers were full. He also attached the spearhead to the shaft, and he was already wearing the gold-threaded soft armor under his clothes. A small kettle helm was placed in front of him, ready for battle at any moment.

In fact, it wasn't just Liu Yuan; others also sensed something was off. However, their feelings weren't as clear, just a sense of unease, like Ser Bandil, who had served as a guard for a long time. He felt that something was wrong and intended to inform the Count. Just then, several servants who went to fetch water by the lake and river were suddenly struck by arrows from an unknown source. Four out of the five servants were hit and fell to the ground, their screams immediately alerting the camp.

The Cetigar family's guards were well-trained and well-equipped professional soldiers. They reacted quickly. Several infantrymen raised their shields to the forefront of the convoy, buying time for those behind to don their armor. The remaining soldiers quickly put on their armor, gathered their weapons, and joined the defensive formation.

Everyone acted in an orderly manner, not particularly worried. The group included not only twenty soldiers but also five knights and seven squires. This armed force alone could easily eliminate hundreds of bandits.

Seeing that the noble's party didn't intend to enter the forest, the attackers began to emerge from the trees in succession. There were quite a few of them, over 100 in number. Liu Yuan glanced at them, noticing only a few with incomplete armor. The vast majority were dressed in rags, wrapped in roughly processed thick animal hides. Even their weapons were a motley assortment, with over half wielding farming tools like scythes, pitchforks, and axes.

His gaze turned solemn. Something was wrong. None of these bandits had bows and arrows, and their direction of approach was also off. There should still be people lying in ambush in the forest where the arrows came from. The bandits, shouting and yelling, gradually approached the camp in a chaotic mass.

Count Adrian said scornfully, "I didn't expect so many bandits to gather near the King's Road. Wasn't it said that King's Landing sent troops to剿 (suppress) them recently?" The Countess and several servants were helping him put on his armor. Ser Bandil said softly, "Lord Count, I've seen those symbols before. These people are likely bandits from the Kingswood Brotherhood, who specialize in kidnapping nobles and merchants. I heard that the Kingsguard, under the King's orders, cleared the Kingswood last month. Some of their main leaders are dead, so these should be the remnants that fled here."

Adrian chuckled, "It doesn't matter. Since we've encountered them today, let's just take care of them! My knights, mount up! Let us crush these bandits!"

The Count personally led the charge, with five knights by his side, followed by seven squires and six cavalrymen. The knights used war lances, which were slightly shorter than jousting lances. They lacked the cone-shaped handguard, and the front cone-shaped tip was extremely sharp, capable of piercing through armored enemies. The cavalrymen used shorter cavalry spears with a long blade that could be used for slashing.

The momentum generated by just nineteen riders was like a thousand horses charging. The warhorses carried the fully armed knights, their speed not fast but very steady. The distance quickly closed to less than 30 meters. Count Adrian took the lead, leveling his knight's lance. The bandits panicked. Some wanted to flee backward, others wanted to charge forward, and still others frantically threw their miscellaneous weapons.

"Bang, bang, bang!" A series of loud sounds echoed. From Liu Yuan's perspective, many people were directly knocked away by the warhorses, and others were trampled under the hooves, accompanied by human screams. The impact of a fully armored warhorse was no less than that of a car crash, as evidenced by the figures sent flying into the air. Liu Yuan was certain that the warhorses in this world were somewhat enhanced; the effect of a cavalry charge on Earth would definitely not be so pronounced.

The Cetigar cavalry force carved a bloody path through the crowd. Several knights, including the Count, had two or three bandits skewered on their lances. The people were not yet dead, still wailing on the lances, and others had blood on their blades, having also made kills.

They threw the knight's lances, along with the people skewered on them, onto the ground. Drawing their hand-and-a-half swords, Count Adrian pointed forward and shouted, "Warriors, kill! Kill them all!" Then the cavalry charged back into the chaotic crowd, their swords slashing left and right. The bandits, with their simple and crude equipment, couldn't resist at all. They quickly collapsed and scattered. However, instead of running towards the nearest forest, they fled towards the hills on the other side.

Seeing that the bandits had collapsed, the infantry, who had been slowly approaching the battlefield, also began to pursue the bandits under the Count's command. Adrian's military skills were quite good; he would avoid allowing cavalry to advance alone under any circumstances. He left only six halberdiers with spears and axes and two crossbowmen to protect the camp. The others followed behind the bandits, slashing at those who fell behind.
