#49 - Chapter 12: Battle of the Trident
Originally, they were going to be thrown into the pot, but fortunately, a notorious smuggler successfully broke through the blockade of the Redwyne fleet that night, quietly sailing into Storm's End harbor with a ship full of onions and salted fish.
Stannis personally met him, still with that cold, expressionless look: "I heard you brought a ship of food. State your name. And what reward do you want?"
The smuggler respectfully said, "Your Grace, my name is Davos Seaworth, from King's Landing. I heard there was a shortage of food here, so I brought some."
Stannis: "Shipbreaker Bay is blockaded by the Redwyne fleet. How did you break through their interception?"
Davos hesitated and said, "I dare not hide it from Your Grace. I am a smuggler captain. I used to smuggle goods to the North, so I have some experience in how to sneak through."
Stannis frowned slightly: "Don't you know that smuggling is a serious crime in the Seven Kingdoms? If it were before, I would have arrested a smuggler like you and executed you myself."
Davos was dumbfounded. *Your Grace, I'm here to help you!* He quickly knelt down and said, "Your Grace, please forgive me. I was born in Flea Bottom in King's Landing and followed a smuggler captain to make a living when I was young. Moreover, I heard that House Baratheon is fighting for justice, so I came to help."
Stannis said, "It seems you still have a chance to redeem yourself. Work hard for me. After the war is won, you will receive your due reward."
Davos quickly said, "Your Grace, I am willing to be loyal to you. Please give me some money, and I will continue to collect food for Storm's End. Even if I risk my life, I will deliver the food safely."
Stannis nodded silently, turned around and waved at them, and Maester Cressen took Davos away.
Thanks to this suddenly appearing smuggler, the garrison of Storm's End temporarily solved the problem of food shortage. Although there was not much food, it was enough for the garrison to continue to hold out.
The next day, a small boat quietly left Shipbreaker Bay under the cover of night.
……………………………………
Near the Kingswood, an army of ten thousand slowly advanced. This was the reinforcement from Dorne, and it was less than a day's journey from King's Landing. Prince Lewyn Martell, who led the army, was constantly frowning. Mad King Aerys actually used his niece, Princess Elia, to coerce Dorne into sending troops, which made House Martell very dissatisfied.
Similarly, he was also very angry with Rhaegar Targaryen. 'Kidnapping'? What nonsense! It was clearly an elopement. This was equivalent to tearing off House Martell's face and trampling it underfoot. If he weren't a Kingsguard, he would have taken his sword and gone to Prince Rhaegar to settle the score like Brandon did.
Speaking of the devil, just as he was thinking about it, Prince Rhaegar appeared beside the Roseroad with a dozen guards. Rhaegar still had that warm smile on his face, making people want to punch him.
Prince Rhaegar Targaryen finally reappeared after being missing for more than half a year, returning to King's Landing with the army from Dorne. Under such circumstances, Aerys II didn't dare to do anything to him. Thus, Prince Rhaegar smoothly took over the new recruits from the Crownlands and the reinforcements from various lords.
He led them to the front line to join the armies led by Jonothor Darry and Barristan Selmy, confronting the rebel army in the Riverlands. At this time, the royal army had reached a scale of more than 40,000, and many of them came from the armed forces of other lords. Therefore, the proportion of cavalry was quite high, almost close to 4,000. It is worth mentioning that Earl Adrian Celtigar led more than a hundred Celtigar elites.
After the Battle of the Bells, Duke Robert left Stone Sept and went to Riverrun, where Jon Arryn and Eddard Stark married the two daughters of Duke Hoster Tully.
After a grand wedding, House Stark of the North, House Baratheon of the Stormlands, House Tully of the Riverlands, and House Arryn of the Vale were truly united in a meaningful way. After the four parties united, their strength was enough to threaten King's Landing.
The rebel army set out again, and when the army reached the Trident River, Robert announced his claim to the Iron Throne. This was no longer a rebellion against tyranny, but a clear declaration of rebellion.
After that, the rebel army gathered on the east bank of the Green Fork River, with a total force of more than 35,000. Under the command of Robert Baratheon, the army prepared to march south along the Kingsroad, arriving at the main crossing point to cross the Trident River.
At about the same time, Rhaegar Targaryen regained command of the royalist army. The Crownlands army and the loyalist troops gathered north of Harrenhal, while the armies led by Ser Barristan Selmy and Ser Jonothor Darry also rushed from Stonehedge to join them.
Moreover, before leaving, Prince Rhaegar had persuaded the King to write a letter seeking the help of former Hand of the King, Tywin Lannister. Anyway, Aerys wrote the letter, but it was unknown what the response would be. The southern loyalist armies were not required to go north, only Duke Mace sent some Tyrell family soldiers to join Rhaegar's army to show his loyalty.
Finally, a group of generals held a military meeting. Rhaegar led the 40,000 royalist troops north along the Kingsroad to the main crossing point of the Trident River, which was the most likely route for the rebel army.
As a result, the two sides encountered each other near the Green Fork River crossing, just after the rebel army had finished crossing the river. But the rebel army discovered the enemy first. Robert quickly made some arrangements, ordering people to dig a circular trench behind the array to restrain the enemy's cavalry.
The terrain here was not friendly to either side. The soft soil of the river beach was not conducive to the royal army's cavalry, and the rebel army was fighting with their backs to the river. There wasn't much time for either side, and they couldn't make more deployments. Next was a head-on confrontation.
The first to launch the attack was Prince Lewyn Martell's Dornish army. The Dornish spearmen charged fiercely at the left flank of the rebel army. There were the lord's armed forces from the Vale, facing the brave Dornishmen's attack, they were immediately defeated. Many small noble lords died one after another, and many well-known knights were caught in bitter battles. Earl Corbray of Heart's Home was seriously injured, and his son, Lyn Corbray, picked up the family's inherited Valyrian steel sword, 'Lady Forlorn,' and fought bravely!
The battle entered a fever pitch as soon as it broke out. On the front, the royal army's cavalry easily eliminated the rebel army's spear and shield soldiers in front of them, but were blocked by the trenches behind the spear formation. The trenches temporarily dug by the rebel army were filled with spikes and spears, and anyone who fell in would be pricked into a hedgehog. But the cavalry couldn't stop, so they simply filled the trenches with the corpses of people and horses.
The Kingsguard followed behind Prince Rhaegar and plunged into the rebel army's formation. Prince Rhaegar, surrounded by a group of knights, directly broke through the rebel army's formation and collided with the enemy's high-end combat power! Because the difference in personal combat power in this world was too great, ordinary soldiers were no longer a threat to those powerful warriors, and it was more of a contest between high-level warriors.
In fact, the fight between knights and lords was even more tragic than the fight between soldiers. In this battle, Ser Barristan Selmy killed dozens of knights and nobles; Earl Jason Mallister of Seagard also killed three powerful vassals of Prince Rhaegar in a row; Lyn Corbray encountered the already injured Prince Lewyn, and after a fight, he stabbed 'Lady Forlorn' into Prince Lewyn's chest.
