#50 - Chapter 13: Aftermath of War (I)

Although many nobles and knights either perished on the battlefield or made a name for themselves in this battle, the fight between Robert and Rhaegar truly determined the outcome.

The two engaged in a fierce battle on the riverbank. Although Robert was naturally gifted with immense strength and formidable combat prowess, Prince Rhaegar was equally skilled in martial arts and possessed extensive combat experience. Wielding a sword and shield in alternating offense and defense, he forced Robert, who wielded a two-handed warhammer, into constant retreat, quickly inflicting several shallow wounds upon him.

Their battle was so intense that any soldiers who inadvertently strayed into their vicinity were quickly caught in the crossfire and torn into a bloody mist of limbs and fragments. Even seasoned knights dared not intervene.

As they fought, Barristan was besieged by a group of highlanders from the North, many of whom were renowned warriors. Despite Barristan's valiant resistance, he was grievously wounded and collapsed, teetering on the brink of death.

Soon, Rhaegar's powerful knights were gradually lost. Among them was another member of the Kingsguard, Jonothor Darry, who was impaled high in the air by a spear with a tree-branch haft, his head drooping lifelessly. The warriors from the North did not adhere to the chivalrous duels of knights; they invariably fought side-by-side in a group.

Perhaps it was divine favor! Prince Rhaegar, who had been gaining the upper hand, suddenly slipped on the riverbank. Seizing the opportunity, Robert launched a fierce attack, fueled perhaps by the hatred of having his betrothed stolen and the desire for revenge. Disregarding his own injuries, he unleashed astonishing power. Finally, Robert channeled all his strength into his warhammer, delivering a devastating blow to Rhaegar's chest, the spikes on the hammer piercing deeply into his breastplate!

The force of the blow was so great that the rubies adorning Rhaegar's armor shattered and fell into the river. It is said that many soldiers rushed into the river to retrieve the ruby fragments, hence the name 'Ruby Ford'.

Prince Rhaegar, a legend in his own time, met his end in the rushing river, at the young age of 24. It is said that in his dying breath, he continuously murmured Lyanna's name. However, his words were obscured by the blood frothing from his mouth, and Robert, leaning over him, could not decipher what he was saying.

Robert was not in much better condition. Rhaegar's sword was still lodged in his abdomen. If not treated promptly, these two rivals might have accompanied each other on the road to the afterlife.

Countless people witnessed Rhaegar's death, and the fighting ceased. With their leader fallen, the royalist army, now leaderless, lost their will to fight and retreated. They routed in utter disarray, and those who could not escape chose to surrender. Oh, yes, Lord Ardrian was among those who surrendered.

Severely wounded, Robert could not pursue the fleeing enemy and entrusted the task to his good brother, Eddard Stark. Subsequently, the near-death Barristan Selmy was brought before Robert, where a group of nobles, led by Lord Roose Bolton, demanded Barristan's execution.

Robert, admiring Barristan's courage and recognizing that House Selmy was a vassal of the Stormlands, not only spared his life but also had his maester tend to his wounds. After arranging all this, Robert lost consciousness and remained in a coma for several days.

Not long after the battle ended, Walder Frey arrived on the battlefield with two thousand soldiers. By this time, the war was already over. As a result, Duke Hoster expressed strong dissatisfaction, calling him 'Late Lord Frey' and questioning his loyalty.

Later, some of the survivors fled back to King's Landing and spread the news of the defeat. Upon learning of Rhaegar's death, King Aerys II immediately sent Queen Rhaella and Prince Viserys to Dragonstone overnight. However, he kept Elia Martell and her two children in the Red Keep as a threat to Prince Doran Martell of Dorne, because the mad king, in his insanity, still believed that Lewyn Martell had betrayed him at the Battle of the Trident.

The Battle of the Ruby Ford almost determined the outcome of the entire war.

News of the result of the Battle of the Trident spread, and to everyone's surprise, the seemingly dominant royal army had been defeated, and even Prince Rhaegar had fallen. Regardless of who was right or wrong, Rhaegar, the previously favored heir to the throne, did not back down and fulfilled his duty as a Targaryen prince.

Although the battle was over, there were still many things to do. At least the remnants of the royalist army scattered throughout the land were a significant threat that needed to be cleared. Many of the rebel generals were seriously injured, especially Robert, who would be bedridden for at least a month.

On the other side, King's Landing was in chaos. King Aerys had already sent the pregnant queen and the young Prince Viserys to Dragonstone and issued orders for Duke Tyrell to lead the Reach's army north to defend the king. At this moment, Lord Tywin, who had been feigning ignorance, suddenly mobilized his troops. He led 12,000 soldiers from the Westerlands to King's Landing. If the armies of the South and West could arrive, the Targaryens would still have a fighting chance.

In the summer of 283 AC, Liu Yuan had been in this world for eight years. Apart from his deep purple eyes, his appearance was almost identical to what it had been on Earth. He had grown to 140 centimeters in height and weighed nearly 35 kilograms. More importantly, he could now move freely for about 17 hours each day. At least within the Citadel, no one treated him as a child anymore. As the youngest assistant maester, all the acolytes looked up to him. He controlled resources that even some archmaesters envied, and neither formal students nor assistant maesters dared to underestimate him. Moreover, many people relied on the projects he distributed to earn money. In this day and age, who would dare offend the gold master?

One day, Liu Yuan was in the Hightower, conversing with several maesters. He had reached the third stage of ravenry and was eligible to learn about white ravens. Archmaester Voggrave taught the other students about the knowledge of ravenry. It was quite interesting; white ravens could be considered one of the most intelligent birds in this world, and some clever ones could even mimic speech like mynah birds. Well-trained ravens could even replace falcons, and many nobles kept ravens.

But Liu Yuan dared not! He had too many secrets. Since learning the history of Westeros, he knew that there was a demigod called a greenseer who could use heart trees and the eyes of crows to obtain anything he wanted to know. Others regarded the greenseers as legends, but having watched the TV series, he knew that such a being truly existed and was still alive.

Suddenly, the High Tower emitted continuous chimes, followed by a chorus of bells throughout Oldtown. It was an alarm! Standing at a high vantage point, Liu Yuan could clearly see several fleets slowly emerging from the vicinity of the High Tower, blockading parts of the sea lanes.
